Saturday 10/21/1969: Baltimore's Seaver earns Cy Young Award
Tom Seaver was named the AL Cy Young Award winner today. Baltimore's right-hander put up fabulous numbers this year which earned him the highest award a pitcher can receive. His ERA of 1.57 helped him to a 20-5 record this year. He struck out 291 and walked 53 in 281.2 innings. He has 22 complete games and one shutout. Juan Pizarro will never forget this year. His dominating season convinced the NL to name Philadelphia (N)'s lefty the Cy Young Award winner of 1969. In 46 starts this year Juan struck out 342 batters in 391.2 innings of work. His ERA is 2.57, his record 32-8. He has 26 complete games and 5 shutouts. He's 4th in the NL in ERA and 1st in wins! Pizarro wins the award for the 4th time in his 12-year career.
 
Saturday 10/21/1969: Pinson (NYY) and Mccovey (PHI) win Most Valuable Player Award
It was a day to remember for New York (A)'s Vada Pinson, who won the AL Most Valuable Player Award today. It put the finishing touches on what has been a tremendous season for the slugger. Vada has gone 225 for 625 (.360) this season, hitting 34 bombs and driving in 108 runs. He has scored 139 runs on his own. He's 1st in the AL in batting! Pinson wins the award for the 3rd time in his 10-year career. A season for the ages earned Philadelphia (N)'s first baseman Willie Mccovey the NL Most Valuable Player Award this year. He has hit 68 taters while batting .364 this season. His 202 hits and 106 walks add up to a .463 on-base percentage. HE HAS WON THE TRIPLE CROWN!!!
 
Saturday 10/21/1969: Taylor (BOS) and Evans (NYM) win Rookie Of The Year Award
The AL Rookie Of The Year Award winner was announced today, with Boston's pitcher Chuck Taylor earning the trophy for putting up the best numbers among rookies in his league. Chuck has a record of 28-11 this season, with an ERA of 3.20. In 320.1 Innings he was able to strike out 132 batters. He has 16 complete games and 3 shutouts. He's 8th in the AL in ERA and 1st in wins! The NL Rookie Of The Year Award winner was announced today as well, with New York (N)'s third baseman Darrell Evans earning the trophy for putting up the best numbers among rookies in his league. His season features a batting average of .275 (137 hits in 498 AB), 23 doubles, 6 triples and 31 taters. Evans collected 102 RBI and 102 runs as well.
 
Friday 10/6/1969: Don Drysdale out for 7 weeks
BOSTON - When it rains, it pours. Boston's ace Don Drysdale will not pitch for at least 7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against New York (A) where he left the field in the 5th inning. Drysdale was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Strained Tricep Muscle. His ERA of 2.99 helped him to a 23-13 record this year. He struck out 300 and walked 36 in 343.2 innings. Don has pitched 2 shutouts and 31 complete games. He's 5th in the AL in ERA and 5th in wins!
 
Monday 10/2/1969: Sam Mcdowell pitches his 4th shutout of the season
LOS ANGELES (N) - Chicago (N)'s left-hander Sam Mcdowell is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Los Angeles (N) found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Mcdowell 4th shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 18th shutouts in his career. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Mcdowell (20-9) did not have perfect control, walking 6. He struck out 8. Chicago (N)'s catcher Dick Dietz got 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a homerun, with 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Mcdowell. The final score of the game was 9-0.
 
Monday 10/2/1969: Los Angeles (N)'s Aaron wins Player of the Week award
John Orsino from Oakland wins his 7th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the AL. Orsino helped his team with an average of .471 and 6 RBI in 17 at bats. It's the 25th time that the NL Player of the Week award goes to Los Angeles (N)'s centerfielder Hank Aaron. In 20 at bats he hit .450 with 3 HR and 5 RBI. Aaron has hit 39 taters this year while batting .263. He adds 21 doubles, along with 96 runs scored. He's 5th in the NL in RBIs and 7th in homeruns!
 
Sunday 10/1/1969: Dick Mcauliffe knocks lights out with three homeruns
CHICAGO (N) - Dick Mcauliffe was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Chicago (N) to a 15-12 win over San Francisco by homering three times. His 1st blast, a two-run homerun off Wayne Schurr in the 3rd inning, landed an estimated 398 feet from home plate. His 2nd shot, a two-run homerun off George Witt in the 7th inning, cleared the fence in center field. His 3rd shot, off Joe Schaffernoth in the 8th inning, was a three-run homerun and cleared the fence in right-center. Dick went 3 for 5, scoring three runs and collecting 7 RBI. So far this season he is batting .268 with 39 homers and 111 RBI. Willie Mccovey was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 9/5/1969.
 
Sunday 10/1/1969: Philadelphia (N)'s Pizarro named Pitcher of the Month
California's pitcher Bill Landis is the AL winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in September. His ERA of just 1.26 helped him to a 5-0 record in September. He worked 43 innings, striking out 27 hitters while walking 15. Bill pitched a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .243 against Bill this season. While posting an ERA of 2.83 he went 9-2 in 6 starts, fanning 60 and walking 33 hitters. He has 4 complete games and one shutout. Juan Pizarro pitched like a legend in September, and the NL named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. His record of 6-0 in 7 was among the leagues best this month. The AL Batter of the Month award goes to Roberto Clemente, Boston's starting rightfielder. Clemente helped his team with an average of .368 and 24 RBI in 87 at bats. It's the 4th time that the AL Player of the Week award goes to New York (A)'s pitcher Tommy John. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.50 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. Billy Williams wins his 7th Player of the Week award. NL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Billy was on fire, hitting .458 with 4 HR and 12 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Billy has gone 148 for 541 (.274) this season, hitting 37 homeruns and driving in 104 runs. He has scored 100 runs on his own.
 
Sunday 9/24/1969: Don Cardwell shuts out Montreal on 2 hits
ATLANTA - Don Cardwell had some fun again. Montreal hitters did not. Atlanta's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 7 career shutouts in 426 games started. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Cardwell (23-15) struck out 6 and walked none, throwing 65 of 104 pitches for strikes. Atlanta's rightfielder Reggie Jackson collected 2 hits in 5 trips to the plate, and collecting 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Cardwell. Atlanta scored 6 runs on 11 hits.
 
Monday 9/18/1969: Chicago (N)'s Johnson wins Player of the Week award
It's the 1st time that the AL Player of the Week award goes to California's pitcher Bill Landis. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.50 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. The NL Player of the Week award goes to Bob Johnson, one of Chicago (N)'s best starting pitchers. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.00 while going 2-0. He pitched two shutouts! This season Johnson compiled an ERA of 3.55, going 13-7 in 21 starts. He fanned 151 while giving up 169 hits in 195.1 innings. He has 13 complete games and 2 shutouts.
 
Sunday 9/17/1969: Bill Landis turns in great performance against Kansas City
KANSAS CITY - California's left-hander Bill Landis will never forget this day. The 26-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Kansas City on Sunday. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Landis (7-2) struck out 7 and walked 3, throwing 67 of 117 pitches for strikes. California's third baseman Dick Allen got 1 hit in 3 AB, blasting a homerun. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Landis. The final score of the game was 1-0.
 
Thursday 9/14/1969: Frank Robinson collects 2000th hit against Los Angeles (N)
LOS ANGELES (N) - Chicago (N)'s rightfielder Frank Robinson was in good mood after the game against Los Angeles (N), and he had every reason as he made some history while collecting his 2000th career hit. Along with his 2000 hits, Frank collected 550 homeruns and 1483 RBI in 12 seasons. 'I still remember my first hit. But the one today is something special. I'll definitely keep that ball!' His hit in the 3rd inning was a two run homerun off Jack Dilauro.
 
Wednesday 9/13/1969: Houston's Perry out for 6 weeks
HOUSTON - When it rains, it pours. Houston's ace Gaylord Perry will not pitch for at least 6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Pittsburgh where he left the field in the 3rd inning. After being taken to a local hospital, Perry was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Pulled Bicep Muscle. In 34 starts this year Gaylord struck out 177 batters in 281.2 innings of work. His ERA is 2.52, his record 20-6. Gaylord has pitched 5 shutouts and 21 complete games. He's 2nd in the NL in ERA and 4th in wins!

DETROIT - Oakland's hitters looked uncomfortable, and Detroit's Nelson Briles didn't help them. The right-hander fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Briles (2-4) struck out 2 and issued 3 BB, throwing 67 of 119 pitches for strikes. Bill Russell provided Detroit with the offense Briles needed as he collected 2 hits in 3 trips to the plate, stroking a double. Detroit scored 1 run on 5 hits.

He now has 48 career shutouts in 456 games started. Pizarro (28-8) fanned 6 and walked 5, throwing 107 pitches. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' George Altman provided Philadelphia (N) with the offense Pizarro needed as he collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate, doubling once. Philadelphia (N) improved its record to 91-51, scoring 6 runs on 10 hits.
 
Tuesday 9/12/1969: Dick Mcauliffe punishes Los Angeles (N) with five hits
LOS ANGELES (N) - Chicago (N)'s shortstop Dick Mcauliffe accomplished a difficult feat in a 19-5 win over Los Angeles (N), drilling five hits to improve his career batting average to .257! His 2nd hit was a two-run double off Bob Sadowski in the 3rd inning. His 3rd hit, off Bob Sadowski in the 5th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left field. Thursday 8/31/1969: Chicago (N)'s Bob Bailey hits for the cycle
MONTREAL - Bob Bailey is a pretty good hitter, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. A single in the 1st off Jerry Robertson accounted for his 1st hit. His 2nd hit was a double off Jerry Robertson in the 3rd inning. A single in the 5th off Jerry Robertson accounted for his 3rd hit. His 4th hit, off Jerry Robertson in the 7th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in right-center. That one tied it at 1 runs apiece. A pitch from Jerry Robertson in the 9th inning left his bat for a RBI triple. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Bob did drive in 2 while scoring one run on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .353. He's now the 41st player in league history to hit for the cycle! Tito Fuentes was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 8/27/1969.
 
Monday 8/28/1969: Player of the Week honors go to Cleveland and Mincher
The Player of the Week award in the AL goes to California's Reggie Cleveland this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Reggie went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.06, while fanning 7 in 17 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. This season Cleveland compiled an ERA of 4.07, going 9-9 in 26 starts. He fanned 111 while giving up 197 hits in 190 innings. He has 3 complete games and 2 shutouts. Don Mincher wins his 1st Player of the Week award. NL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. In 19 at bats he hit .526 with 3 HR and 8 RBI.
 
Sunday 8/27/1969: Cleveland's Tito Fuentes gets the cycle
CLEVELAND - Tito Fuentes is a pretty good hitter, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. In the 2nd inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Bill Faul. His 2nd hit was a double off Bill Faul in the 4th inning. A triple off Bill Faul in the 6th inning, accounted for his 3rd hit. A single in the 8th off Bill Faul accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! A single in the 9th off Bill Kelso accounted for his 5th hit. Tito did drive in 3 while scoring one run on his own. He is hitting .283 this season, with 3 HR and 56 RBI. He becomes the 40th player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. On 7/26/1969, Russ Snyder was the last player to hit for the cycle.
 
Tuesday 8/22/1969: Chris Short (BOS) will miss 6 weeks
BOSTON - Boston's southpaw Chris Short suffered a severe injury on Tuesday and will be out for at least 6 weeks. In the 9th of the game against Seattle he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Short was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Torn Tricep Muscle. This season Short compiled an ERA of 3.78, going 15-10 in 31 starts. He fanned 142 while giving up 244 hits in 245.1 innings. Chris has pitched 2 shutouts and 17 complete games.

It's the 8th time that the AL Player of the Week award goes to California's rightfielder Floyd Robinson. He had an on base percentage of .517 and hit .500, while driving in 8 runs. PHILADELPHIA (N) - Willie Mccovey was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Philadelphia (N) to a 13-1 win over Cincinnati by homering three times. A 483 foot drive to center field marked his 1st bomb, a two-run homerun off Jim Perry in the 1st inning. His 2nd shot, a three-run homerun off Danny Coombs in the 3rd inning, cleared the fence in center field. In the 6th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Tom Qualters. Willie finished 4 for 5, with FOUR runs scored with 6 RBI.
 
Saturday 8/19/1969: Bill Edgerton pitches his 1st shutout of the season
KANSAS CITY - Baltimore's left-hander Bill Edgerton will never forget this day. The 28-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 1-hitter, against Kansas City on Saturday. Edgerton (2-5) fanned 6 and walked 3, throwing 121 pitches. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Ken Hunt helped Edgerton at the plate, he finished with 1 hit in 2 AB, blasting a homerun. Baltimore improved its record to 45-75, scoring 2 runs on 8 hits.
 
Monday 8/14/1969: Phoebus (WS2) and Cepeda (HOU) win P.O.W. award
Tom Phoebus of Washington wins his 1st Player of the Week award for dominating AL's hitters the entire week. Phoebus was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.00. Along the way he struck out 19 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .262 against Tom this season. While posting an ERA of 5.02 he went 9-13 in 23 starts, fanning 144 and walking 67 hitters. He has 14 complete games and 2 shutouts. The Player of the Week award in the NL goes to Houston's Orlando Cepeda this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .609 with 9 RBI and slugged 1.304 in 23 at bats. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. Cepeda has hit 35 taters this year while batting .332. He adds 25 doubles, along with 70 runs scored. He's 7th in the NL in batting, 4th in homeruns and 6th in RBI!

DETROIT - When it rains, it pours. Detroit's right-hander Ed Rakow will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Baltimore where he left the field in the 5th inning. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Bicep Muscle. His ERA of 4.05 helped him to a 6-12 record this year. He struck out 106 and walked 19 in 166.2 innings.

NEW YORK (N) - St. Louis (N)'s hitters were dominated by New York (N)'s Jim Palmer. He gave up just 2 hits in recording his 1st shutout of the season. Palmer (2-3) struck out 9 and walked 3, throwing 60 of 109 pitches for strikes. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Wednesday 7/26/1969: Russ Snyder on fire, hits for cycle
CHICAGO (A) - Russ Snyder led Chicago (A) to a 8-4 win over California by squeezing four hits out of his bat. That's not the best part, though. He hit for the cycle as well! His 1st hit was a RBI double off Bob Gibson in the 1st inning. A triple off Bob Gibson in the 3rd inning, accounted for his 2nd hit. His 3rd hit, a solo homerun off Bob Gibson in the 7th inning, cleared the fence in left field. A single in the 8th off Bob Gibson accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Russ scored 2 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 116 hits in 345 at bats, resulting in a .336 batting average. He's now the 39th player in league history to hit for the cycle! Bert Campaneris was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 5/3/1969.

SAN DIEGO - Hitting homeruns is one of the most difficult things in sports. To hit three of them in one game is almost sensational. This season John compiled an ERA of 3.04, going 5-3 in 10 starts. He fanned 51 while giving up 83 hits in 77 innings. Tommy has pitched one shutout and 5 complete games.
 
Monday 6/5/1969: Houston's Perry wins Player of the Week award
Cleveland's centerfielder Bobby Darwin had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the AL Player of the Week. Bobby pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .476 with 3 HR and 10 RBI while slugging 1.095. The Player of the Week award in the NL goes to Houston's Gaylord Perry this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Perry was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50. Along the way he struck out 11 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .224 against Gaylord this season. Thursday 6/1/1969: Philadelphia (N)'s Pizarro named Pitcher of the Month
Oakland's Charlie Vaughan had a terrific May, and it earned him the AL Pitcher of the month award. He started 8 games in May, going 7-1 and compiling an ERA of 2.13 in 71.2 innings. Charlie fanned 65 hitters. Charlie pitched a shutout as well. Charlie has a record of 8-4 this season, with an ERA of 3.80. In 120.2 Innings he was able to strike out 102 batters. He has 7 complete games and one shutout. He's 6th in the AL in wins! The best month of May in the NL certainly had Philadelphia (N)'s left-hander Juan Pizarro, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. His ERA of just 1.57 helped him to a 8-0 record in May. He worked 69 innings, striking out 55 hitters while walking 19. This season Pizarro compiled an ERA of 2.17, going 12-0 in 15 starts. He fanned 104 while giving up 95 hits in 128.2 innings. Juan has pitched 2 shutouts and 7 complete games. He's 1st in the NL in ERA and 1st in wins!

Monday 5/29/1969: Kansas City 's Bosman wins Player of the Week award
The AL Player of the Week award goes to Dick Bosman, one of Kansas City 's best starting pitchers. Dick went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.53, while fanning 8 in 17 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. The NL Player of the Week award goes to Joe Torre, Philadelphia (N)'s starting catcher. In 28 at bats he hit .429 with 2 HR and 11 RBI. Joe managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week.
 
Monday 5/22/1969: Philadelphia (N)'s Torre wins Player of the Week award
It's the 3rd time that the AL Player of the Week award goes to Washington's rightfielder Tony Conigliaro. He had an on base percentage of .483 and hit .462, while driving in 9 runs. Tony managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. His season numbers are: .261 AVG, 42 hits, 12 doubles, no triples and 9 longballs, along with 35 RBI and 25 runs scored. Sunday 5/21/1969: Cleveland has no chance in a 2-hitter by Dennis Ribant
CLEVELAND - It was a great day for Boston's right-hander Dennis Ribant. The 27-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Cleveland on Sunday. Bobby Darwin spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he singled with no outs in the 5th inning. Ribant (5-3) struck out 5 and issued 1 BB, throwing 56 of 97 pitches for strikes. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' The hitting star for Boston was shortstop Dick Howser, he stroked 2 hits in 5 AB, doubling once. Boston improved its record to 29-15, scoring 5 runs on 11 hits.
 
Friday 5/19/1969: Fred Klages pitches 2-hit shutout against San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO - San Diego's right-hander Fred Klages will never forget this day. The 25-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against San Francisco on Friday. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' Klages (2-4) struck out 6 and issued 2 BB, throwing 65 of 108 pitches for strikes. San Diego's third baseman Bernie Allen finished with 1 hit in 3 AB, blasting a homerun, scoring 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Klages. San Diego improved its record to 13-29, scoring 3 runs on 6 hits.
 
Friday 5/19/1969: Los Angeles (N)'s Radatz severely injured
LOS ANGELES (N) - Los Angeles (N) is without its ace Dick Radatz for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Don Demeter in a game against Montreal. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being taken to a local hospital, Radatz was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Ruptured Tricep Tendon. His ERA of 4.38 helped him to a 4-4 record this year. He struck out 81 and walked 31 in 86.1 innings.
 
Friday 5/19/1969: Chicago (N)'s Robinson out for 6 weeks
CHICAGO (N) - Being hit with a pitch is no fun at all. Especially when you get injured. Chicago (N)'s rightfielder Frank Robinson will miss about 6 weeks after being hit by Juan Pizarro in the 5th inning of the game between Chicago (N) and Philadelphia (N). After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Fractured Wrist. Surgery will be performed next week. While compiling an on base percentage of .458, Frank hit .340 and slugged .728. He has collected 41 runs batted in this year. He's 6th in the NL in batting, 4th in homeruns and 2nd in RBI!
 
Friday 5/19/1969: Baltimore has no chance in a 2-hitter by Charlie Vaughan
BALTIMORE - Oakland's southpaw Charlie Vaughan didn't look unexperienced at all. The 21 year old pitched a 2-hit shutout against Baltimore, recording his 1st shutout of the season. Vaughan (5-4) fanned 9 and walked 2, throwing 110 pitches. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' The hitting star for Oakland was catcher John Orsino, he finished with 3 hits in 5 AB, doubling once, with 4 RBI. Oakland scored 11 runs on 15 hits.
 
Wednesday 5/17/1969: Steve Barber fires 2-hitter against Chicago (N)
CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s hitters looked uncomfortable, and Montreal's Steve Barber didn't help them. The lefty fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Barber (2-9) fanned 5 and walked 4, throwing 117 pitches. Bob Schroder provided Montreal with the offense Barber needed as he finished 1 for 4, and driving in 2 runs. Montreal improved its record to 14-26, scoring 2 runs on 5 hits.
 
Monday 5/15/1969: Boyer and Kubek win Player of the Week award
Boston's third baseman Ken Boyer had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the AL Player of the Week. Ken pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .400 with 3 HR and 14 RBI while slugging .880. His season numbers are: .281 AVG, 36 hits, 9 doubles, no triples and 9 bombs, along with 31 RBI and 28 runs scored. He's 5th in the AL in RBIs and 7th in homeruns! The NL Player of the Week award goes to Tony Kubek, Pittsburgh's starting shortstop. Tony pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .480 with 4 HR and 10 RBI while slugging 1.040. Kubek has hit 11 homeruns this year while batting .333. He adds 3 doubles, along with 28 runs scored. He's 10th in the NL in batting!
 
Monday 5/8/1969: Earl Francis turns in great performance against New York (N)
ST. LOUIS (N) - New York (N)'s offense is struggling, and St. Louis (N)'s Earl Francis didn't help them. The right-hander fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Francis (5-2) fanned 5 and walked 3, throwing 117 pitches. Zoilo Versalles provided St. Louis (N) with the offense Francis needed as he got 1 hit in 4 AB, blasting a homerun. St. Louis (N) scored 1 run on 5 hits.
 
Monday 5/8/1969: Clemente (BOS) and Shamsky (LAN) win P.O.W. award
It's the 10th time that the AL Player of the Week award goes to Boston's rightfielder Roberto Clemente. In 19 at bats he hit .474 with 5 HR and 10 RBI. He has hit 13 homeruns while batting .333 this season. His 38 hits and 13 walks add up to a .400 on-base percentage. He's 3rd in the AL in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns! It's the 1st time that the NL Player of the Week award goes to Los Angeles (N)'s leftfielder Art Shamsky. Art was on fire, hitting .611 with 1 HR and 5 RBI. His season features a batting average of .309 (34 hits in 110 AB), 10 doubles, no triples and 5 homeruns. Shamsky collected 22 RBI and 17 runs as well.
 
Thursday 5/4/1969: Boston's Willie Mays laces 3000th career hit
BOSTON - Boston's players had every reason to congratulate Willie Mays, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 3000th career hit! He hit a single in the 1st off Steve Hargan for number 3000. In 18 years of big league action so far, Willie has compiled a batting average of .312, along with 706 homeruns and 2144 RBI. 'Baseball is a great game, and adding something to it's history is smething I've always wanted. What a great day!' It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame!
 
Wednesday 5/3/1969: California's Bert Campaneris hits for the cycle
CHICAGO (A) - California's shortstop Bert Campaneris accomplished a difficult feat in a game against Chicago (A), hitting for the cycle to improve his career batting average to .243! A single in the 1st off Bo Belinsky accounted for his 1st hit. A single in the 3rd off Bo Belinsky accounted for his 2nd hit. Number 3 in the 5th inning accounted for a double. A pitch from Dick Joyce in the 6th inning left his bat for a two-run triple. Number 5 in the 9th inning, a shot estimated at 412 feet, cleared the wall in left-center. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Bert did drive in 5 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He now has a total of 30 hits this season, accounting for a .294 batting average. He becomes the 38th player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. Wayne Causey was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 9/3/1968.
 
Wednesday 5/3/1969: New York (A)'s Vada Pinson gets milestone hit
DETROIT - New York (A)'s rightfielder Vada Pinson was in good mood after the game against Detroit, and he had every reason as he made some history while collecting his 2000th career hit. His hit in the 9th inning was a double off Nelson Briles. In 10 years of big league action so far, Vada has compiled a batting average of .332, along with 271 homeruns and 982 RBI. 'You dream about that as a kid, but when you reach such a milestone it's hard to believe. Fantastic.'
 
Monday 5/1/1969: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced
It's the 1st time that the AL Pitcher of the Month award goes to Boston's pitcher Chuck Taylor. He struck out 20 hitters in his 6 starts, putting together a record of 5-1 while pitching 20 innings. His ERA in April was 1.37. Chuck got two complete game shutouts as well! Jim Colborn couldn't have pitched much better than he did in April, and the NL thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He had an ERA of just 1.80 in 45 innings of work in which he struck out 11 hitters. His record in April is 4-1. Jim fired THREE shutouts!
 
Monday 5/1/1969: Batter of the Month award winners announced
The Batter of the Month award in the AL goes to Oakland's Felipe Alou this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Alou helped his team with an average of .537 and 21 RBI in 95 at bats. The NL's best player of the month was Chicago (N)'s Wes Covington, who wins the award for the 4th time in his career. In 101 at bats he hit .426 with 13 HR and 36 RBI.

Felipe pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .577 with 2 HR and 8 RBI while slugging .962. His season numbers are: .537 AVG, 51 hits, 14 doubles, no triples and 3 homeruns, along with 21 RBI and 20 runs scored. He's 1st in the AL in batting and 9th in RBI! The Player of the Week award in the NL goes to Chicago (N)'s Wes Covington this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Covington helped his team with an average of .448 and 15 RBI in 29 at bats.
 
Thursday 4/27/1969: Johnny Romano parks three against Montreal
MONTREAL - Johnny Romano was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Atlanta to a 9-3 win over Montreal by homering three times. His 1st blast, a three-run homerun off Billy Hoeft in the 1st inning, landed an estimated 358 feet from home plate. His 2nd shot, off Billy Hoeft in the 4th inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in right field. Number 3 in the 6th inning, a shot estimated at 394 feet, cleared the wall in left-center. Johnny went 4 for 5, scoring FOUR runs and collecting 7 RBI. On 4/9/1969, Hank Aaron was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game.
 
Tuesday 4/25/1969: Jim Colborn turns in great performance against St. Louis (N)
ST. LOUIS (N) - San Diego's right-hander Jim Colborn didn't look unexperienced at all. The 22 year old pitched a 2-hit shutout against St. Louis (N), recording his 3rd shutout of the season. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Colborn (4-0) struck out 4 and walked 2, throwing 63 of 112 pitches for strikes. George Alusik helped Colborn at the plate, he finished 1 for 4, hitting a homerun, and collecting 3 RBI. San Diego scored 6 runs on 9 hits.
 
Monday 4/24/1969: Philadelphia (N)'s Mccovey wins Player of the Week award
The AL's best player of the week was New York (A)'s Vada Pinson, who wins the award for the 8th time in his career. Vada pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .500 with 2 HR and 6 RBI while slugging .923. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 8 game hitting streak right now. Vada is hitting .451 this year, with 23 hits in 51 at bats. He has driven in 11 runs, slugging .843. Willie Mccovey wins his 8th Player of the Week award. NL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Mccovey helped his team with an average of .500 and 6 RBI in 18 at bats. Mccovey has hit for a .300 average this season. He has 12 extra base hits along with 44 total bases, resulting in a .733 slugging percentage.
 
Saturday 4/22/1969: Dennis Bennett (LAN) will miss 5 weeks
LOS ANGELES (N) - Los Angeles (N)'s southpaw Dennis Bennett suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 5th of the game against Cincinnati he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Bennett was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Ruptured Elbow Ligament. Dennis has a record of 4-0 this season, with an ERA of 2.29. In 39.1 Innings he was able to strike out 20 batters. He has 3 complete games and one shutout. He's 5th in the NL in ERA and 1st in wins!
 
Saturday 4/22/1969: Kansas City 's Causey severely injured
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City 's third baseman Wayne Causey hurt himself in the 8th inning while making a routine throw to first base. He experienced serious pain and had to leave the game. Wayne Causey will miss at least 7 weeks. Kansas City wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Causey had suffered a Ruptured Elbow Ligament. Causey has hit 3 homeruns this year while batting .250. He adds 6 doubles, along with 15 runs scored.
 
Monday 4/17/1969: Player of the Week honors go to Brown and Hart
Oakland's first baseman Larry Brown had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the AL Player of the Week. In 33 at bats he hit .455 with 2 HR and 11 RBI. This year Brown drove in 11 and scored 10 runs while batting .315 with 2 bombs. It's the 3rd time that the NL Player of the Week award goes to Cincinnati's leftfielder Jim ray Hart. Jim ray went 10 for 24 (.417), while hitting 6 HR and collecting 13 RBI. Jim ray managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week.

New York (A)'s first baseman Norm Cash had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the AL Player of the Week. Norm went 10 for 22 (.455), while hitting 6 HR and collecting 16 RBI. The Player of the Week award in the NL goes to Los Angeles (N)'s Hank Aaron this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Hank was on fire, hitting .375 with 5 HR and 11 RBI.

Sunday 4/9/1969: Hank Aaron on fire, crushes three
SAN FRANCISCO - Los Angeles (N)'s centerfielder Hank Aaron showed the world why he is one of the most amazing sluggers in a 13-1 win over San Francisco. He almost knockes the cover off the ball, resulting in three homeruns. His 1st shot, a two-run homerun off Tom Hall in the 1st inning, cleared the fence in right-center. His 2nd shot, off Tom Hall in the 4th inning, was a GRAND SLAM and cleared the fence in left field. A 424 foot drive to center field marked his 3rd bomb, a solo homerun off Jim Ollom in the 6th inning. Hank stroked 3 hits in 4 AB, scoring FOUR runs and collecting 7 RBI. Los Angeles (N) improved its record to 6-0, scoring 13 runs on 18 hits.
 
Sunday 4/9/1969: Norm Cash found the stroke, smashes four homers
NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s first baseman Norm Cash showed the world why he is one of the most amazing sluggers in a 15-6 win over California. He almost knockes the cover off the ball, resulting in four homeruns. His 1st shot, a two-run homerun off Ken Mcbride in the 1st inning, cleared the fence in center field. Number 2 in the 3rd inning, a shot estimated at 376 feet, cleared the wall in right-center. In the 6th inning he unloaded a three-run homerun off Fred Talbot. A 495 foot drive to left-center marked his 4th bomb, a two-run homerun off Vern Geishert in the 8th inning. Overall he got 4 hits in 5 AB, with FOUR runs scored with 10 RBI. So far this season he is batting .455 with 6 homers and 16 RBI. The induction into the Hall of Fame is almost a sure thing for him now! The final score of the game was 15-6.

SAN FRANCISCO - With his best stuff going, San Francisco's Denny Lemaster overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. San Diego had no chance, collecting just 2 hits against the left-hander. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Lemaster (1-0) struck out 2 and walked 3, throwing 58 of 111 pitches for strikes. Billy Cowan helped Lemaster at the plate, he finished 1 for 2. San Francisco scored 3 runs on 3 hits.
 
Thursday 4/6/1969: Jerry Koosman pitches his 1st shutout of the season
CLEVELAND - With his best stuff going, Cleveland's Jerry Koosman overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Detroit had no chance, collecting just 2 hits against the southpaw. Koosman (1-0) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking none, throwing 111 pitches. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Cleveland's second baseman Tito Fuentes collected 2 hits in 3 trips to the plate, doubling once, and driving in 2 runs.
