Thursday 10/5/1960: Drysdale and Smith receive Cy Young Award The AL Cy Young Award winner was announced today, with Boston's right-hander Don Drysdale taking home the desired trophy. He certainly earned it, he struck fear into hitters all year long. Opposing players hit .246 against Don this season. While posting an ERA of 2.95 he went 24-14 in 43 starts, fanning 276 and walking 58 hitters. Don has pitched 3 shutouts and 33 complete games. He's 1st in the AL in ERA and 1st in wins! Drysdale wins the award for the 2nd time in his 4-year career. Awards may not be the most important thing for Frank Smith, but Cincinnati's right-hander smiled as he was named the NL Cy Young Award winner. Thursday 10/5/1960: Cepeda and Colavito win Most Valuable Player Award It was a day to remember for Kansas City's Orlando Cepeda, who won the AL Most Valuable Player Award today. It put the finishing touches on what has been a tremendous season for the slugger. Orlando is hitting .391 this year, with 232 hits in 594 at bats. He has driven in 133 runs, slugging .636. He's 1st in the AL in batting, 10th in homeruns and 2nd in RBI! The Most Valuable Player Award in the NL was handed to Chicago (N)'s leftfielder Rocky Colavito! Thursday 10/5/1960: Detroit's Cash earns Rookie Of The Year Award Getting an award is a nice way to start a career. Detroit's Norm Cash smiled as he was named the AL Rookie Of The Year Award winner. St. Louis (N)'s left-hander pitched a 2-hitter, his 1st shutout of the season. Rozek (9-18) struck out 4 and issued 5 BB, throwing 66 of 120 pitches for strikes. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' St. Louis (N)'s rightfielder Jackie Brandt got 2 hits in 4 AB, doubling once. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Rozek. St. Louis (N) improved its record to 58-93, scoring 4 runs on 10 hits. |
Tuesday 9/19/1960: Del Crandall on fire, hits for cycle MILWAUKEE - Del Crandall is a pretty good hitter, but his 4 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. A RBI double off Ray Crone in the 1st inning accounted for his 1st hit. His 2nd hit was a RBI triple off Ray Crone in the 3rd inning. Number 3 in the 5th inning, a shot estimated at 427 feet, cleared the wall in left-center. A single in the 7th off Ray Crone accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Del did drive in 4 while scoring one run on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 161 hits in 486 at bats, resulting in a .331 batting average. He's now the 18th player in league history to hit for the cycle! Eddie Mathews was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 4/29/1960. |

Thursday 9/14/1960: Kansas City's George Altman ropes five hits WASHINGTON - 'Wow, five hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said Kansas City's centerfielder George Altman after the 13-5 win over Washington. Friday 9/8/1960: New York (A)'s Koufax severely injured NEW YORK (A) - New York (A) is without its ace Sandy Koufax for at least 6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Pete Runnels in a game against Boston. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Ruptured Tricep Tendon was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His ERA of 3.99 helped him to a 19-10 record this year. He struck out 255 and walked 99 in 277.1 innings. Sandy has pitched one shutout and 14 complete games. He's 2nd in the AL in wins! |
Monday 9/4/1960: Norm Zauchin slams 3 HR PITTSBURGH - Milwaukee beat Pittsburgh 9-6, but that was not the real story of the game. Norm Zauchin was, as he went deep three times. A 459 foot drive to left-center marked his 1st bomb, a solo homerun off Russ Meyer in the 1st inning. A pitch from Russ Meyer in the 7th inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 408 feet from home plate in right-center. That one tied it at 6 runs apiece. In the 9th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Russ Meyer. Overall he went 3 for 5, scoring three runs and driving in 5 runs. His homerun total this year is 34, along with 112 RBI. |

Sunday 7/30/1960: New York (A)'s Mantle out for 6 weeks NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s centerfielder Mickey Mantle will miss at least 6 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Broken Foot which will require surgery. Mantle has hit for a .370 average this season. He has 56 extra base hits along with 245 total bases, resulting in a .702 slugging percentage. He's 2nd in the AL in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 4th in RBI! |

Thursday 7/6/1960: Huge blow for Chicago (A)'s Clevenger, career over CHICAGO (A) - It was one of baseball saddest days. Chicago (A)'s right-hander Tex Clevenger fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against Detroit on Thursday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to Gene Woodling, then suddenly collapsed. Ruptured Disc Back was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Tex has a record of 4-11 this season, with an ERA of 4.01. In 168.1 Innings he was able to strike out 71 batters. His career featured a record of 56-53 with an ERA of 3.87. Baseball will certainly miss this great player. |

Monday 6/26/1960: Cincinnati's Face out for 6 weeks CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's right-hander Roy Face suffered a severe injury on Monday and will be out for at least 6 weeks.
