Thursday 10/5/1959: Mays (BOS) and Snider (LA) win Most Valuable Player Award A season for the ages earned Boston's centerfielder Willie Mays the AL Most Valuable Player Award this year. Mays has hit 50 taters this year while batting .322. He adds 40 doubles, along with 130 runs scored. He's 7th in the AL in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI! Mays wins the award for the 2nd time in his 8-year career. It was a day to remember for Los Angeles' Duke Snider, who won the NL Most Valuable Player Award today. It put the finishing touches on what has been a tremendous season for the slugger. Duke has gone 189 for 503 (.376) this season, hitting 42 longballs and driving in 124 runs. Thursday 10/5/1959: Killebrew and Jackson receive Rookie Of The Year Award Detroit's Harmon Killebrew was almost in tears when he heard the news. The 23 year old first baseman was named the Rookie Of The Year Award winner in the AL today. What a way to begin a career! While compiling an on base percentage of .332, Harmon hit .221 and slugged .493. He has collected 108 runs batted in this year. He's 7th in the AL in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns! Milwaukee's second baseman Ron Jackson has worked hard to reach the big leagues. His work paid off today as the NL named him the Rookie Of The Year Award winner! Sunday 10/1/1959: Washington's Pizarro earns Pitcher of the Month award It's the 2nd time that the AL Pitcher of the Month award goes to Washington's pitcher Juan Pizarro. His ERA of just 0.25 helped him to a 4-0 record in September. He worked 36 innings, striking out 22 hitters while walking 8. Juan pitched THREE complete game shutouts! Juan has a record of 13-13 this season, with an ERA of 2.77. In 266 Innings he was able to strike out 191 batters. Juan has pitched 5 shutouts and 24 complete games. Saturday 9/23/1959: Warren Hacker pitches 2-hit shutout against Milwaukee MILWAUKEE - Warren Hacker had an unexpectedly great performance against Milwaukee on Saturday, pitching a 2-hitter for his 1st shutout of the season. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Hacker (17-5) fanned 3 and walked 3, throwing 123 pitches. Chicago (N)'s third baseman Vada Pinson went 2 for 5, blasting a homerun, with 4 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Hacker. The final score of the game was 11-0. |
Saturday 9/23/1959: Los Angeles' Nieman severely injured LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles' rightfielder Bob Nieman will miss at least 8-9 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Broken Ankle. Nieman has hit 18 homeruns this year while batting .308. He adds 33 doubles, along with 94 runs scored. |

Sunday 9/10/1959: Frank Smith quiets Pittsburgh bats with shutout PITTSBURGH - Great days are rare. But not for Cincinnati's right-hander Frank Smith. Pittsburgh found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 11th shutout this season, and the 22nd time he has done it in his career. Wally Post spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he singled with no outs in the 5th inning. Smith (26-9) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking none, throwing 100 pitches. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' The hitting star for Cincinnati was third baseman Bob Hazle, he finished 1 for 4, hitting a homerun. Friday 9/8/1959: Ned Garver turns in great performance against Philadelphia (N) MILWAUKEE - Philadelphia (N)'s bats were sleeping, and Milwaukee's Ned Garver gave them no chance to wake up. He gave up just 2 hits in recording his 2nd shutout of the season. Garver (14-16) struck out 4 and walked 2, throwing 58 of 102 pitches for strikes. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. Saturday 8/26/1959: Boston's Willie Mays pounds five hits WASHINGTON - 'You know, in batting practice I didn't really feel that comfortable about my stroke today, but baseball is more than hitting. Then, when you're not trying to force a hit, you slug them in droves,' says Willie Mays after his 5 hit game, which Boston won 8-6 against Washington. Number 1 in the 1st inning accounted for a double. His 2nd hit, a solo homerun off Bennie Daniels in the 3rd inning, cleared the fence in right field. A 430 foot drive to center field marked his 3rd hit, a two-run homerun off Bennie Daniels in the 5th inning. His 4th hit was a RBI double off Bennie Daniels in the 7th inning. A double off Bennie Daniels in the 9th inning accounted for his 5th hit. Willie scored 3 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .333. |
Wednesday 8/23/1959: Mickey Mantle found the stroke, smashes three homers NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s centerfielder Mickey Mantle showed the world why he is one of the most amazing sluggers in a 6-2 win over Detroit. He almost knockes the cover off the ball, resulting in three homeruns. His 1st shot, a solo homerun off Kent Peterson in the 1st inning, cleared the fence in left-center. The game was tied, 2-2, after the blast. His 2nd blast, a solo homerun off Kent Peterson in the 6th inning, landed an estimated 458 feet from home plate. A 333 foot drive to left field marked his 3rd bomb, a two-run homerun off Kent Peterson in the 8th inning. Overall he went 3 for 4, with three runs scored with 4 RBI. So far this season he is batting .314 with 33 homers and 100 RBI. New York (A) improved its record to 82-45, scoring 6 runs on 7 hits. |
Monday 8/21/1959: St. Louis (N)'s Freese wins Player of the Week award Eddie Mathews wins his 9th Player of the Week award. AL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Tuesday 8/15/1959: Bob Grim (KC) will miss 5 weeks KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's ace Bob Grim suffered a severe injury on Tuesday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 7th of the game against Cleveland he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Kansas City wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Sunday 8/6/1959: Pittsburgh's Bell out for 5 weeks PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's players were scared when they had to watch Gus Bell suffer a serious injury when he dove for a ball in the game against Chicago (N). He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Bell will probaby miss 5 weeks. Bell was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Fractured Hip. He has hit 11 bombs while batting .349 this season. His 102 hits and 19 walks add up to a .397 on-base percentage. |

He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Sammy Esposito in a game against Cleveland. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. New York (A) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Ford had suffered a Ruptured Bicep Tendon. Tuesday 7/18/1959: Bob Friend out for 5 weeks LOS ANGELES - When it rains, it pours. Los Angeles' ace Bob Friend will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against San Francisco where he left the field in the 4th inning. Bone Chips Elbow was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His ERA of 3.94 helped him to a 13-8 record this year. He struck out 113 and walked 67 in 207.2 innings. He has 14 complete games and one shutout. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Cleveland and Detroit. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Francona collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Groin Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Saturday 7/1/1959: Drysdale and Clevenger receive Pitcher of the Month award Don Drysdale pitched like a legend in June, and the AL named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. His record of 6-0 in 7 was among the leagues best this month. In 63 innings of work he allowed just 62 hits while striking out 39, compiling an ERA of just 2.43. Don has a record of 14-5 this season, with an ERA of 3.54. In 170.1 Innings he was able to strike out 105 batters. He's 3rd in the AL in ERA and 1st in wins! Tex Clevenger couldn't have pitched much better than he did in June, and the NL thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. Tuesday 6/20/1959: Dick Donovan out for 5 weeks KANSAS CITY - Kansas City is without its ace Dick Donovan for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Mickey Mantle in a game against New York (A). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Ruptured Tricep Tendon which will require surgery. Dick has a record of 7-9 this season, with an ERA of 3.99. Friday 6/9/1959: Los Angeles' Duke Snider belts 500th career homerun PITTSBURGH - Los Angeles' leftfielder Duke Snider was in good mood after the game against Pittsburgh, and he had every reason as he made baseball history while collecting his 500th career homerun. In the 9th inning he unloaded his 500th blast off Roger Craig. In 12 years of big league action so far, Duke has compiled a batting average of .317, along with 2139 hits and 1546 RBI. Duke hit 30+ homeruns in a season 9 times, hitting 40 bombs 8 times. 'I still remember my first hit. But the one today is something special. I'll definitely keep that ball!' Saturday 6/3/1959: Huge blow for Los Angeles' Van cuyk, career over LOS ANGELES - It was one of baseball saddest days. Los Angeles' left-hander Chris Van cuyk fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against Cincinnati on Saturday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to Bob Borkowski, then suddenly collapsed. Van cuyk was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Bone Chips Shoulder. This season Van cuyk compiled an ERA of 2.69, going 5-2 in 9 starts. He fanned 57 while giving up 52 hits in 63.2 innings. Chris has pitched one shutout and one complete game. His career featured a record of 79-39 with an ERA of 4.22. Baseball will certainly miss this great player. |

Tuesday 5/30/1959: Kansas City's Wally Moon pounds five hits DETROIT - On Tuesday, Kansas City's leftfielder Wally Moon displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against Detroit, punishing their pitchers with five hits. His 2nd hit was a triple off Jack Banta in the 4th inning. A 348 foot drive to right field marked his 5th hit, a three-run homerun off Vito Valentinetti in the 9th inning. Friday 4/7/1959: Tom Poholsky dominates Chicago (N), gives up just 2 hits CHICAGO (N) - With his best stuff going, St. Louis (N)'s Tom Poholsky overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Chicago (N) had no chance, collecting just 2 hits against the right-hander. Poholsky (1-0) struck out 8 and walked 4, throwing 68 of 123 pitches for strikes. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' St. Louis (N)'s first baseman Danny Gardella went 2 for 3, hitting a homerun, and driving in 3 runs.
