Friday 10/6/1958: Cincinnati's Smith named Cy Young Award
Awards may not be the most important thing for Sandy Koufax, but New York (A)'s left-hander smiled as he was named the AL Cy Young Award winner. Sandy has a record of 27-7 this season, with an ERA of 2.98. In 305.1 Innings he was able to strike out 290 batters. He has 18 complete games and 4 shutouts. He's 3rd in the AL in ERA and 1st in wins! Frank Smith will never forget this year. His dominating season convinced the NL to name Cincinnati's right-hander the Cy Young Award winner of 1958. Opposing players hit .212 against Frank this season. While posting an ERA of 2.15 he went 25-6 in 38 starts, fanning 249 and walking 64 hitters. Frank has pitched 2 shutouts and 9 complete games. He's 1st in the NL in ERA and 4th in wins! Smith wins the award for the 3rd time in his 8-year career.
 
Friday 10/6/1958: Mantle and Snider earn Most Valuable Player Award honors
The 1958 AL Most Valuable Player Award winner has been announced. It's New York (A)'s centerfielder Mickey Mantle who really had a great offensive year. Mantle has hit 45 bombs this year while batting .348. He adds 25 doubles, along with 136 runs scored. He's 2nd in the AL in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI! Mantle wins the award for the 2nd time in his 7-year career. Los Angeles' leftfielder Duke Snider had a fabulous season as well, no doubt about it. The NL shared this opinion and names the 32 year old the Most Valuable Player Award winner! This year Snider drove in 155 and scored 153 runs while batting .363 with 51 bombs. He's 2nd in the NL in batting, 1st in homeruns and 2nd in RBI! Snider wins the award for the 5th time in his 11-year career.
 
Friday 10/6/1958: Rookie Of The Year Award winners announced
Jim Pagliaroni was named the AL Rookie Of The Year Award winner today. Cleveland's catcher put up pretty good numbers for a rookie this year. This 20 year old kid will probably have a long and successful career! His season features a batting average of .308 (149 hits in 483 AB), 26 doubles, no triples and 40 bombs. Pagliaroni collected 113 RBI and 84 runs as well. He's 4th in the AL in RBIs and 3rd in homeruns! Getting an award is a nice way to start a career. Milwaukee's Turk Farrell smiled as he was named the NL Rookie Of The Year Award winner. Opposing players hit .285 against Turk this season. While posting an ERA of 4.69 he went 14-13 in 34 starts, fanning 131 and walking 81 hitters.
 
Sunday 10/1/1958: Koufax (NYY) and Smith (CIN) win monthly pitcher award
Sandy Koufax couldn't have pitched much better than he did in September, and the AL thought so as well, naming the lefty Pitcher of the Month. Frank Smith couldn't have pitched much better than he did in September, and the NL thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He started 3 games in September, going 3-0 and compiling an ERA of 0.68 in 26.1 innings. Frank fanned 21 hitters. In 38 starts this year Frank struck out 249 batters in 297.2 innings of work. His ERA is 2.15, his record 25-6. Frank has pitched 2 shutouts and 9 complete games. He's 1st in the NL in ERA and 4th in wins!
 
Sunday 10/1/1958: Chicago (A)'s Moryn earns Batter of the Month award
Chicago (A)'s centerfielder Walt Moryn had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the AL Batter of the Month. Walt was on fire, hitting .463 with 8 homeruns and 15 RBI. This year Moryn drove in 98 and scored 84 runs while batting .319 with 40 bombs. He's 10th in the AL in batting, 3rd in homeruns and 8th in RBI! The Batter of the Month award in the NL goes to Chicago (N)'s Rocky Colavito this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Rocky was on fire, hitting .466 with 9 homeruns and 25 RBI. Colavito has hit 40 taters this year while batting .317. He adds 35 doubles, along with 104 runs scored. He's 4th in the NL in RBIs and 6th in homeruns!
 
Monday 9/25/1958: Moryn and Colavito win Player of the Week award
It's the 3rd time that the AL Player of the Week award goes to Chicago (A)'s centerfielder Walt Moryn. Walt pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .500 with 4 HR and 8 RBI while slugging 1.222. Rocky Colavito from Chicago (N) wins his 3rd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the NL. Rocky was on fire, hitting .619 with 5 HR and 11 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! Colavito has hit 40 longballs this year while batting .317. He adds 35 doubles, along with 104 runs scored. He's 4th in the NL in RBIs and 6th in homeruns!
 
Thursday 9/21/1958: Bobby Shantz out for 5-6 weeks
KANSAS CITY - When it rains, it pours. Kansas City's left-hander Bobby Shantz will not pitch for at least 5-6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Chicago (A) where he left the field in the 8th inning. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Pulled Bicep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. In 42 starts this year Bobby struck out 147 batters in 321.2 innings of work. His ERA is 4.11, his record 18-18. He's 9th in the AL in ERA and 8th in wins!
 
Tuesday 9/19/1958: Los Angeles' Willie Jones ropes five hits
LOS ANGELES - Willie Jones is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. A 369 foot drive to left field marked his 2nd hit, a solo homerun off Jack Spring in the 2nd inning. His 3rd hit was a two-run double off Jack Spring in the 3rd inning. A pitch from Don Elston in the 7th inning left his bat for a three-run homerun, landing 391 feet from home plate in right field. He collected singles in the 1st inning and in the 5th inning . Willie did drive in 6 while scoring 3 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 195 hits in 588 at bats, resulting in a .332 batting average. Los Angeles scored 13 runs on 19 hits.
 
Tuesday 9/19/1958: Walt Moryn knocks lights out with three homeruns
KANSAS CITY - Walt Moryn powered Chicago (A) to a 10-4 win over Kansas City. He did it in style by homering three times. His 1st shot, off Willard Schmidt in the 5th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in center field. A pitch from Ken Lehman in the 7th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 360 feet from home plate in left field. Number 3 in the 9th inning, a shot estimated at 446 feet, cleared the wall in center field. Walt finished 4 for 5, with FOUR runs scored and driving in 5 runs. His homerun total this year is 39, along with 95 RBI. On 8/8/1958, Ken Boyer was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game.
 
Monday 9/18/1958: Boston's Runnels wins Player of the Week award
Pete Runnels from Boston wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the AL. Pete was on fire, hitting .444 with 2 HR and 8 RBI. He has hit 6 longballs while batting .312 this season. His 148 hits and 60 walks add up to a .388 on-base percentage. He's 10th in the AL in batting! The NL's best player of the week was Los Angeles' Duke Snider, who wins the award for the 23rd time in his career. Duke was on fire, hitting .550 with 1 HR and 7 RBI.

Chicago (A)'s second baseman Billy Martin had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the AL Player of the Week. Billy was on fire, hitting .607 with 1 HR and 6 RBI. He has hit 20 bombs while batting .359 this season. His 188 hits and 43 walks add up to a .410 on-base percentage. He's 1st in the AL in batting! It's the 3rd time that the AL Player of the Week award goes to Chicago (A)'s catcher Del Crandall. Del was on fire, hitting .474 with 3 HR and 4 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 8 game hitting streak right now.
 
Friday 9/1/1958: Gene Woodling (CLE) will miss 5 weeks
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's players were scared when they had to watch Gene Woodling suffer a serious injury when he dove for a ball in the game against Detroit. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Woodling will probaby miss 5 weeks. Cleveland wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Woodling had suffered a Fractured Hip. Gene has gone 111 for 369 (.301) this season, hitting 10 longballs and driving in 38 runs. He has scored 68 runs on his own.
 
Friday 9/1/1958: Kansas City's Schmidt earns Pitcher of the Month award
Kansas City's Willard Schmidt had a terrific August, and it earned him the AL Pitcher of the month award. He had an ERA of just 1.86 in 58 innings of work in which he struck out 32 hitters. His record in August is 4-2. Willard also fired a shutout. Willard has a record of 11-13 this season, with an ERA of 5.11. In 236 Innings he was able to strike out 150 batters. Willard has pitched one shutout and 3 complete games. It's the 5th time that the NL Pitcher of the Month award goes to Los Angeles' pitcher Bob Friend. He went 8-0 in August and finished the month with an ERA of 2.94. He struck out 41 in 70.1 innings. His ERA of 3.57 helped him to a 25-5 record this year. He struck out 174 and walked 110 in 309.2 innings. He has 20 complete games and one shutout. He's 5th in the NL in ERA and 1st in wins!

The AL Batter of the Month award goes to Randy Jackson, Chicago (A)'s starting third baseman. Randy pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .330 with 7 and 20 RBI while slugging .670. Jackson has hit 34 taters this year while batting .288. He adds 25 doubles, along with 84 runs scored. He's 5th in the AL in RBIs and 3rd in homeruns! The Batter of the Month award in the NL goes to Los Angeles' Duke Snider this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Snider helped his team with an average of .375 and 33 RBI in 104 at bats. This year Snider drove in 135 and scored 131 runs while batting .360 with 44 bombs. He's 2nd in the NL in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 2nd in RBI!
 
Monday 8/28/1958: Baltimore's Wertz wins Player of the Week award
Vic Wertz wins his 6th Player of the Week award. AL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He hit .542 with 14 RBI and slugged 1.125 in 24 at bats. His season features a batting average of .296 (132 hits in 446 AB), 15 doubles, 4 triples and 21 longballs. Wertz collected 81 RBI and 79 runs as well. Duke Snider from Los Angeles wins his 22nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the NL. He hit .462 with 5 RBI and slugged 1.000 in 26 at bats. Snider has hit for a .362 average this season. He has 84 extra base hits along with 347 total bases, resulting in a .721 slugging percentage. He's 2nd in the NL in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 2nd in RBI!
 
Friday 8/25/1958: Dick Rozek blanks Washington with a 1-hitter
CLEVELAND - It was a great day for Cleveland's lefty Dick Rozek. The 31-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 1-hitter, against Washington on Friday. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Rozek (10-8) fanned 6 and walked 2, throwing 105 pitches. Roger Maris provided Cleveland with the offense Rozek needed as he collected 2 hits in 5 trips to the plate, homering twice, scoring twice and driving in 6 runs. Cleveland improved its record to 67-61, scoring 9 runs on 15 hits.
 
Monday 8/21/1958: Player of the Week honors go to Maas and Snider
It's the 1st time that the AL Player of the Week award goes to Baltimore's pitcher Duke Maas. Duke went 2-0 with an ERA of 2.50, while fanning 11 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. Duke Snider from Los Angeles wins his 21st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the NL. Duke went 11 for 18 (.611), while hitting 5 HR and collecting 12 RBI.
 
Sunday 8/20/1958: Huge blow for Cleveland's Kiely, career over
CLEVELAND - It was one of baseball saddest days. Cleveland's left-hander Leo Kiely fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against Baltimore on Sunday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to Harvey Haddix, then suddenly collapsed. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Bicep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Opposing players hit .256 against Leo this season. While posting an ERA of 3.60 he went 12-6 in 24 starts, fanning 93 and walking 38 hitters. His career featured a record of 37-35 with an ERA of 4.30. Baseball will certainly miss this great player.
 
Monday 8/14/1958: Washington's Bell out for 5 weeks
WASHINGTON - Washington's right-hander Gary Bell suffered a severe injury on Monday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 2nd of the game against Baltimore he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle. This season Bell compiled an ERA of 3.91, going 10-7 in 20 starts. He fanned 79 while giving up 149 hits in 154.1 innings. He has 9 complete games and one shutout.

Del Ennis wins his 4th Player of the Week award. AL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Sunday 8/13/1958: Mudcat Grant out for 4-5 weeks
WASHINGTON - Washington's right-hander Mudcat Grant suffered a severe injury on Sunday and will be out for at least 4-5 weeks. In the 4th of the game against Cleveland he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After being taken to a local hospital, Grant was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Strained Tricep Muscle. His ERA of 5.24 helped him to a 6-11 record this year. He struck out 66 and walked 70 in 154.2 innings. Mudcat has pitched one shutout and 9 complete games.
 
Tuesday 8/8/1958: Ken Boyer parks three against Philadelphia (N)
SAN FRANCISCO - Ken Boyer was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered San Francisco to a 18-0 win over Philadelphia (N) by homering three times. A pitch from Jim Willis in the 1st inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 398 feet from home plate in left field. A 430 foot drive to left field marked his 2nd bomb, a solo homerun off Don Elston in the 4th inning. In the 6th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Bob Milliken. Ken finished 4 for 4, doubling once, scoring FIVE times with 5 RBI. In 1572 career at bats, he has hit 87 homeruns and collected 296 RBI.
 
Tuesday 8/8/1958: Huge blow for New York (A)'s Howard, career over
NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s season has taken a hit after one of their best players, catcher Elston Howard, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss entire career. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Broken Ankle. His season numbers are: .316 AVG, 87 hits, 13 doubles, 2 triples and 14 bombs, along with 61 RBI and 56 runs scored.
 
Monday 8/7/1958: Los Angeles' Hank Aaron mashes five hits
CHICAGO (N) - On Monday, Los Angeles' centerfielder Hank Aaron displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against Chicago (N), punishing their pitchers with five hits. Number 2 in the 3rd inning accounted for a RBI double. In the 7th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Stu Miller. A RBI double off Bill Kennedy in the 8th inning accounted for his 5th hit. He collected singles in the 1st inning and in the 5th inning . Hank scored 2 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .366. The final score of the game was 9-3.

The Player of the Week award in the AL goes to Cleveland's Jim Pagliaroni this time, as the catcher displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He had an on base percentage of .519 and hit .455, while driving in 6 runs. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. This year Pagliaroni drove in 89 and scored 66 runs while batting .321 with 33 longballs. He's 8th in the AL in batting, 1st in homeruns and 3rd in RBI! The NL's best player of the week was Los Angeles' Duke Snider, who wins the award for the 20th time in his career. Warren has a record of 14-11 this season, with an ERA of 4.15. In 234 Innings he was able to strike out 76 batters. He's 7th in the AL in wins! Monday 7/31/1958: Burdette and Hoeft win Player of the Week award
Lew Burdette of Chicago (A) wins his 1st Player of the Week award for dominating AL's hitters the entire week. Burdette was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50. Along the way he struck out 6 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. Lew has a record of 14-11 this season, with an ERA of 4.03. In 212 Innings he was able to strike out 58 batters. He has 13 complete games and one shutout. He's 6th in the AL in wins! The NL Player of the Week award goes to Billy Hoeft, one of Pittsburgh's best starting pitchers. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.00 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. In 17 starts this year Billy struck out 112 batters in 154 innings of work. His ERA is 2.81, his record 11-6. Billy has pitched 2 shutouts and 12 complete games. He's 2nd in the NL in ERA and 8th in wins!
 
Sunday 7/30/1958: Billy Hoeft blanks Chicago (N) with a 1-hitter
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's Billy Hoeft overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Chicago (N) had no chance, collecting just one hit against the left-hander. Hoeft (11-6) struck out 6 and issued 3 BB, throwing 66 of 112 pitches for strikes. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' Pittsburgh's first baseman Dale Coogan finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, homering once, and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Hoeft. Pittsburgh scored 2 runs on 5 hits.
 
Sunday 7/30/1958: Bob Purkey fires 2-hitter against Boston
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's Bob Purkey overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Boston had no chance, collecting just 2 hits against the right-hander. Purkey (17-8) struck out 4 and walked 1, throwing 62 of 96 pitches for strikes. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Tito Francona provided Cleveland with the offense Purkey needed as he went 3 for 4. Cleveland improved its record to 57-46, scoring 1 run on 7 hits.
 
Saturday 7/29/1958: Duke Snider ropes 2000th career hit
LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles' leftfielder Duke Snider already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. Along with his 2000 hits, Duke collected 463 homeruns and 1450 RBI in 11 seasons. 'This day is special, I'll probably remember it my whole life. Thank god I'm blessed with the talent to play this game.' His hit in the 7th inning was a double off Don Cardwell.
 
Monday 7/24/1958: St. Louis (N)'s Poholsky out for 5 weeks
ST. LOUIS (N) - St. Louis (N)'s right-hander Tom Poholsky suffered a severe injury on Monday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 2nd of the game against San Francisco he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This season Poholsky compiled an ERA of 4.28, going 8-9 in 24 starts. He fanned 117 while giving up 167 hits in 183 innings. He has 8 complete games and one shutout.
 
Monday 7/24/1958: Player of the Week honors go to Pagliaroni and Aaron
The AL Player of the Week award goes to Jim Pagliaroni, Cleveland's starting catcher. He hit .450 with 5 RBI and slugged 1.150 in 20 at bats. Hank Aaron from Los Angeles wins his 3rd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the NL. He hit .531 with 15 RBI and slugged 1.063 in 32 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games.
 
Thursday 7/20/1958: Willie Jones found the stroke, smashes three homers
LOS ANGELES - Willie Jones powered Los Angeles to a 11-6 win over Chicago (N). He did it in style by homering three times. His 1st shot, off Jerry Lane in the 2nd inning, was a three-run homerun and cleared the fence in left field. His 2nd blast, a three-run homerun off Jerry Lane in the 3rd inning, landed an estimated 409 feet from home plate. A pitch from Don Mossi in the 7th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 422 feet from home plate in center field. Willie finished with 4 hits in 5 AB, with three runs scored with 7 RBI. So far this season he is batting .338 with 17 homers and 67 RBI.
 
Monday 7/17/1958: Bob Nieman ropes four hits, completes cycle
LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles' rightfielder Bob Nieman once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Chicago (N)'s pitching staff with a 4 hit performance on Monday. A single in the 1st off Art Houtteman accounted for his 1st hit. Hit number 2 followed in the 4th inning, a RBI triple. In the 5th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off George Witt. In the 6th inning he belted a three-run double off Dick Tomanek. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Bob scored 3 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! He is hitting .320 this season, with 20 HR and 90 RBI. He's now the 14th player in league history to hit for the cycle! A pitch from Bob Purkey in the 1st inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 360 feet from home plate in right field. His 2nd hit, a two-run homerun off Bob Purkey in the 2nd inning, landed an estimated 451 feet from home plate. A double off Humberto Robinson in the 3rd inning accounted for his 3rd hit. He collected singles in the 8th inning and in the 9th inning . Gil scored 3 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .332. Monday 7/10/1958: Player of the Week honors go to Doby and Bouchee
Larry Doby from New York (A) wins his 5th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the AL. He hit .538 with 11 RBI and slugged .923 in 26 at bats. Tuesday 7/4/1958: Chicago (A)'s Jim Lemon slams three taters
CHICAGO (A) - Hitting a homerun is fine, but hitting three of them in one game is something special. Chicago (A)'s leftfielder Jim Lemon accomplished that feat in a 12-2 win over Washington. In the 2nd inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Connie Johnson. A pitch from Connie Johnson in the 6th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 403 feet from home plate in left field. His 3rd shot, off Connie Johnson in the 7th inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in center field. Overall he got 3 hits in 5 AB, scoring three times and collecting 4 RBI. Frank Thomas was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 5/30/1958.
 
Monday 7/3/1958: Avila (NYY) and Lockman (PHI) win P.O.W. award

Boston's pitcher Don Drysdale is the AL winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in June. His record of 5-3 in 8 was among the leagues best this month. In 71.1 innings of work he allowed just 52 hits while striking out 39, compiling an ERA of just 2.27. Don also fired a shutout. In 22 starts this year Don struck out 117 batters in 195 innings of work. His ERA is 2.72, his record 14-8. He has 18 complete games and one shutout. He's 3rd in the AL in ERA and 2nd in wins! Curt Simmons pitched like a legend in June, and the NL named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He started 8 games in June, going 6-2 and compiling an ERA of 2.59 in 66 innings. Curt fanned 30 hitters. His ERA of 3.56 helped him to a 11-6 record this year. He struck out 68 and walked 60 in 161.2 innings. He's 6th in the NL in ERA and 6th in wins!

Roy Sievers of Baltimore wins his 6th Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the AL. Roy pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .427 with 8 and 20 RBI while slugging .854. His season numbers are: .353 AVG, 94 hits, 14 doubles, 6 triples and 19 longballs, along with 53 RBI and 58 runs scored. He's 2nd in the AL in batting, 6th in homeruns and 6th in RBI! Los Angeles' leftfielder Duke Snider had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the NL Batter of the Month. Duke pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .380 with 8 and 26 RBI while slugging .741. Snider has hit 22 taters this year while batting .377. He adds 25 doubles, along with 81 runs scored. He's 2nd in the NL in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 2nd in RBI!
 
Wednesday 6/28/1958: Jim Bunning quiets Boston bats with shutout
NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s right-hander Jim Bunning is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Boston on just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 5th time he has done it in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Jack Cusick singled with two outs in the 5th inning. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Bunning (5-2) struck out 7 and issued 1 BB, throwing 65 of 103 pitches for strikes. Gil Mcdougald helped Bunning at the plate, he finished 3 for 4, going deep twice, hitting a double, scoring three runs and driving in 2 runs. The final score of the game was 6-0.
 
Monday 6/26/1958: Player of the Week honors go to Courtney and Snider
The Player of the Week award in the AL goes to Kansas City's Clint Courtney this time, as the catcher displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Clint pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .500 with 1 HR and 8 RBI while slugging .889. The NL Player of the Week award goes to Duke Snider, Los Angeles' starting leftfielder. He hit .556 with 13 RBI and slugged 1.222 in 27 at bats.
 
Monday 6/19/1958: Cleveland's Purkey wins Player of the Week award
It's the 1st time that the AL Player of the Week award goes to Cleveland's pitcher Bob Purkey. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.50 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. It's the 2nd time that the NL Player of the Week award goes to Los Angeles' centerfielder Hank Aaron. Hank was on fire, hitting .440 with 2 HR and 9 RBI. Hank managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. Hank is hitting .322 this year, with 86 hits in 267 at bats. He has driven in 66 runs, slugging .607. ST. LOUIS (N) - St. Louis (N)'s season took a blow when Solly Hemus suffered a serious injury in the game against San Francisco. He hurt his arm throwing a strike to first base. Hemus will probaby miss 5 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Bone Chips Elbow. While compiling an on base percentage of .412, Solly hit .276 and slugged .373. He has collected 23 runs batted in this year.
 
Friday 6/9/1958: Johnny Groth out for 5-6 weeks
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's centerfielder Johnny Groth will miss about 5-6 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 5th inning of the game between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. He dove for a drive off the bat of Gus Bell, and immediately signaled that he's not OK after hitting the ground. After being taken to a local hospital, Groth was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Broken Finger. This year Groth drove in 31 and scored 26 runs while batting .262 with 4 taters.
 
Monday 6/5/1958: Billy Hoeft blanks St. Louis (N) with a 2-hitter
ST. LOUIS (N) - St. Louis (N)'s hitters looked uncomfortable, and Pittsburgh's Billy Hoeft didn't help them. The southpaw fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Hoeft (5-3) fanned 9 and walked 4, throwing 130 pitches. Pittsburgh's leftfielder Charlie Maxwell stroked 1 hit in 4 AB, homering once, and collecting 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Hoeft. The final score of the game was 5-0.

Los Angeles' rightfielder Bob Nieman had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the NL Player of the Week. He's 1st in the NL in RBIs and 5th in homeruns!
 
Saturday 6/3/1958: Russ Meyer dominates Philadelphia (N), throws NO-HITTER
PITTSBURGH - With his best stuff going, Pittsburgh's Russ Meyer overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Philadelphia (N) had no chance, getting NO hits against the right-hander. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today, and it's especially nice to do it in such fashion.' Meyer (5-5) fanned 3 and walked 4, throwing 98 pitches. The hitting star for Pittsburgh was third baseman Preston Ward, he finished 3 for 5, blasting a homerun, doubling once, scoring twice and driving in 4 runs. Pittsburgh scored 10 runs on 13 hits.
 
Saturday 6/3/1958: Jack Sanford pitches 1-hit shutout against Detroit
DETROIT - Jack Sanford had his best stuff going, and Detroit hitters had nothing to cheer about. Baltimore's right-hander pitched a 1-hitter, his 2nd shutout of the season. Sanford (5-1) fanned 3 and walked 3, throwing 112 pitches. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Joe Collins helped Sanford at the plate, he finished 3 for 4, homering twice, doubling once, scoring 2 runs with 5 RBI. Baltimore scored 8 runs on 11 hits.
 
Thursday 6/1/1958: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced
Winner of this months AL Pitcher of the Month award is New York (A)'s Sandy Koufax. He went 6-1 in May and finished the month with an ERA of 2.34. He struck out 58 in 61.2 innings. Sandy pitched a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .203 against Sandy this season. While posting an ERA of 2.64 he went 10-3 in 13 starts, fanning 100 and walking 32 hitters. PHILADELPHIA (N) - Frank Thomas was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Milwaukee to a 11-8 win over Philadelphia (N) by homering three times. A pitch from Steve Ridzik in the 3rd inning left his bat for a three-run homerun, landing 429 feet from home plate in right-center. That one tied it at 4 runs apiece. His 2nd shot, off Steve Ridzik in the 5th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in right field. A 340 foot drive to left field marked his 3rd bomb, a solo homerun off Don Elston in the 11th inning. Frank got 4 hits in 5 AB, with FOUR runs scored with 6 RBI.

NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s right-hander Ewell Blackwell is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Kansas City on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 32nd time he has done it in his career. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Blackwell (5-4) fanned 5 and walked 1, throwing 113 pitches. Yogi Berra helped Blackwell at the plate, he finished with 1 hit in 1 AB, blasting a homerun, and driving in 3 runs. New York (A) improved its record to 30-15, scoring 6 runs on 11 hits.
 
Tuesday 5/23/1958: Jackie Collum turns in great performance against Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH - It was a great day for San Francisco's southpaw Jackie Collum. The 30-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 1-hitter, against Pittsburgh on Tuesday. Collum (7-2) fanned 2 and walked 1, throwing 101 pitches. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' The hitting star for San Francisco was second baseman Dick Schofield, he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, and driving in 2 runs. San Francisco scored 4 runs on 12 hits.

He now has 3 career shutouts in 119 games started. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Roy Face couldn't have pitched much better than he did in April, and the NL thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. His record of 6-0 in 7 was among the leagues best this month. In 50.2 innings of work he allowed just 62 hits while striking out 27, compiling an ERA of just 5.51.

Cleveland's catcher Jim Pagliaroni had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the AL Batter of the Month. Jim went 29 for 73 (.397), while hitting 7 HR and collecting 18 RBI. It's the 1st time that the NL Batter of the Month award goes to Cincinnati's shortstop Ernie Banks. Ernie was on fire, hitting .351 with 12 homeruns and 38 RBI.

CLEVELAND - Cleveland is without its southpaw Leo Kiely for at least 5-6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Bobby Brown in a game against Chicago (A). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being taken to a local hospital, Kiely was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Bone Chips Shoulder. This season Kiely compiled an ERA of 2.60, going 3-1 in 7 starts. He fanned 26 while giving up 47 hits in 52 innings.

NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s Elston Howard suffered a serious injury Thursday in a game against Washington. Howard fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 5-6 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Pulled Calf Muscle which will require surgery. He has hit 3 taters while batting .407 this season. His 11 hits and 0 walks add up to a .407 on-base percentage.

Red Schoendienst wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. AL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Friday 4/7/1958: Dick Kryhoski stars with cycle against Los Angeles
CHICAGO (N) - Dick Kryhoski is a pretty good hitter, but his 4 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. His 1st hit, a solo homerun off Gordon Jones in the 3rd inning, landed an estimated 363 feet from home plate. A single in the 4th off Bob Miller accounted for his 2nd hit. In the 6th inning he unloaded a two-run triple off Clem Labine. Number 4 in the 8th inning accounted for a double. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Dick did drive in 4 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .357. He becomes the 13th player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. On 6/30/1956, Eddie Mathews was the last player to hit for the cycle.
