Tuesday 10/3/1952: Garcia and Pierce receive Cy Young Award
The AL Cy Young Award winner was announced today, with Cleveland's right-hander Mike Garcia taking home the desired trophy. He certainly earned it, he struck fear into hitters all year long. In 41 starts this year Mike struck out 171 batters in 331 innings of work. His ERA is 3.43, his record 26-10. He has 21 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 3rd in the AL in ERA and 2nd in wins! Billy Pierce will never forget this year. His dominating season convinced the NL to name Philadelphia (N)'s left-hander the Cy Young Award winner of 1952. Billy has a record of 25-9 this season, with an ERA of 3.68. In 327.2 Innings he was able to strike out 221 batters. He has 15 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 5th in the NL in ERA and 1st in wins!
 
Tuesday 10/3/1952: Most Valuable Player Award winners announced
A season for the ages earned Chicago (A)'s leftfielder Gus Zernial the AL Most Valuable Player Award this year. This year Zernial drove in 140 and scored 111 runs while batting .322 with 50 longballs. He's 1st in the AL in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns! The NL Most Valuable Player Award goes to Duke Snider this year. He had an extraordinary season as well! He has hit 44 bombs while batting .341 this season. His 195 hits and 74 walks add up to a .412 on-base percentage. HE HAS WON THE TRIPLE CROWN!!! Snider wins the award for the 3rd time in his 5-year career.
 
Tuesday 10/3/1952: Mantle (NYY) and Harshman (PHI) win Rookie Of The Year Award
Getting an award is a nice way to start a career. New York (A)'s Mickey Mantle smiled as he was named the AL Rookie Of The Year Award winner. While compiling an on base percentage of .397, Mickey hit .276 and slugged .624. He has collected 132 runs batted in this year. He's 2nd in the AL in RBIs and 1st in homeruns! Jack Harshman will never forget his first full season. The NL was convinced that Philadelphia (N)'s pitcher, 25 years old, should be the Rookie Of The Year Award winner of 1952. This season Harshman compiled an ERA of 3.60, going 20-10 in 40 starts. He fanned 170 while giving up 262 hits in 312.2 innings. He has 12 complete games and one shutout. He's 4th in the NL in ERA and 4th in wins!
 
Sunday 10/1/1952: Weik (WS1) and Harris (CHN) win monthly pitcher award
Washington's pitcher Dick Weik is the AL winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in September. He went 3-0 in September and finished the month with an ERA of 1.24. He struck out 17 in 29 innings. Opposing players hit .238 against Dick this season. While posting an ERA of 4.55 he went 13-8 in 36 starts, fanning 172 and walking 185 hitters. The best month of September in the NL certainly had Chicago (N)'s left-hander Mickey Harris, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. His ERA of just 1.24 helped him to a 2-0 record in September. He worked 29 innings, striking out 11 hitters while walking 11. Mickey also fired a shutout. In 8 starts this year Mickey struck out 50 batters in 111 innings of work. His ERA is 3.65, his record 6-4. He has 2 complete games and one shutout.
 
Sunday 10/1/1952: Batter of the Month award winners announced
Chicago (A)'s leftfielder Gus Zernial had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the AL Batter of the Month. He hit .351 with 29 RBI and slugged .932 in 74 at bats. Zernial has hit 50 taters this year while batting .322. He adds 27 doubles, along with 111 runs scored. He's 1st in the AL in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns! Duke Snider of Brooklyn wins his 4th Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the NL. He hit .361 with 23 RBI and slugged .759 in 83 at bats. He has hit 44 homeruns while batting .341 this season. His 195 hits and 74 walks add up to a .412 on-base percentage. HE HAS WON THE TRIPLE CROWN!!!
 
Monday 9/25/1952: Philadelphia (N)'s Mike Goliat goes deep three times
PHILADELPHIA (N) - Mike Goliat was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Philadelphia (N) to a 14-3 win over Brooklyn by homering three times. A 423 foot drive to center field marked his 1st bomb, a three-run homerun off Clem Labine in the 3rd inning. Number 2 in the 5th inning, a shot estimated at 369 feet, cleared the wall in right field. A pitch from Billy Loes in the 7th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 385 feet from home plate in left-center. Overall he went 3 for 4, scoring three times and collecting 5 RBI. In 1676 career at bats, he has hit 41 homeruns and collected 205 RBI. Ralph Kiner was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 7/26/1952.
 
Monday 9/25/1952: Cincinnati's Adcock wins Player of the Week award
Gus Zernial wins his 3rd Player of the Week award. AL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Gus was on fire, hitting .500 with 5 HR and 9 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 8 game hitting streak right now. Zernial has hit 50 homeruns this year while batting .322. He adds 27 doubles, along with 111 runs scored. He's 1st in the AL in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns! Joe Adcock from Cincinnati wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the NL. Adcock helped his team with an average of .474 and 8 RBI in 19 at bats.
 
Monday 9/18/1952: Lenhardt (SLA) and Harris (CHN) win P.O.W. award
Don Lenhardt from St. Louis (A) wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the AL. Don went 8 for 19 (.421), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 6 RBI. His season features a batting average of .248 (115 hits in 463 AB), 13 doubles, 3 triples and 29 homeruns. Lenhardt collected 84 RBI and 82 runs as well. It's the 1st time that the NL Player of the Week award goes to Chicago (N)'s pitcher Mickey Harris. Harris was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.50. Along the way he struck out 7 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well.
 
Monday 9/11/1952: Hutchinson and Bell win Player of the Week award
Boston (A)'s pitcher Fred Hutchinson had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the AL Player of the Week. Hutchinson was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 2.12. Along the way he struck out 5 in 17 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .282 against Fred this season. While posting an ERA of 4.54 he went 16-18 in 38 starts, fanning 94 and walking 70 hitters. Fred has pitched 3 shutouts and 21 complete games. He's 6th in the AL in wins! It's the 1st time that the NL Player of the Week award goes to Pittsburgh's centerfielder Gus Bell. He had an on base percentage of .480 and hit .409, while driving in 10 runs.
 
Sunday 9/10/1952: Duke Snider nabs five hits against New York (N)
NEW YORK (N) - 'You know, in batting practice I didn't really feel that comfortable about my stroke today, but baseball is more than hitting. Then, when you're not trying to force a hit, you slug them in droves,' says Duke Snider after his 5 hit game, which Brooklyn won 8-0 against New York (N). A pitch from Sheldon Jones in the 1st inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 425 feet from home plate in left-center. Number 2 in the 3rd inning, a shot estimated at 400 feet, cleared the wall in right-center. He had singles in the 6th inning , in the 7th inning (one RBI) and in the 9th inning . Duke did drive in 4 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .350.
 
Sunday 9/10/1952: Billy Loes quiets New York (N) bats with shutout
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s hitters looked uncomfortable, and Brooklyn's Billy Loes didn't help them. The right-hander fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 1-hitter. Loes (13-9) struck out 4 and issued 3 BB, throwing 65 of 110 pitches for strikes. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Duke Snider helped Loes at the plate, he finished with 5 hits in 5 AB, going deep twice, scoring 2 runs and collecting 4 RBI. The final score of the game was 8-0.
 
Monday 9/4/1952: St. Louis (N)'s Howerton wins Player of the Week award
Gus Zernial from Chicago (A) wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the AL. Zernial helped his team with an average of .480 and 10 RBI in 25 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. The Player of the Week award in the NL goes to St. Louis (N)'s Bill Howerton this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Bill was on fire, hitting .579 with 3 HR and 8 RBI. Bill managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week.
 
Sunday 9/3/1952: Hal Gregg pitches 2-hit shutout against Philadelphia (A)
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s Hal Gregg overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Philadelphia (A) had no chance, collecting just 2 hits against the right-hander. Gregg (11-14) fanned 7 and walked 3, throwing 115 pitches. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Snuffy Stirnweiss provided Chicago (A) with the offense Gregg needed as he finished with 2 hits in 3 AB, stroking a double, with 3 RBI. Chicago (A) scored 7 runs on 9 hits.
 
Friday 9/1/1952: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced
Bob Feller couldn't have pitched much better than he did in August, and the AL thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He went 7-0 in August and finished the month with an ERA of 3.41. He struck out 51 in 58 innings. His ERA of 3.96 helped him to a 25-7 record this year. He struck out 214 and walked 124 in 286.2 innings. Bob has pitched 4 shutouts and 13 complete games. He's 8th in the AL in ERA and 1st in wins! The best month of August in the NL certainly had Brooklyn's right-hander Don Newcombe, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. He struck out 33 hitters in his 7 starts, putting together a record of 6-1 while pitching 33 innings. His ERA in August was 2.33. Don has a record of 21-5 this season, with an ERA of 3.47. In 236.1 Innings he was able to strike out 122 batters. He has 10 complete games and one shutout. He's 3rd in the NL in ERA and 1st in wins!
 
Friday 9/1/1952: Detroit's Valo earns Batter of the Month award
The AL Batter of the Month award goes to Elmer Valo, Detroit's starting rightfielder. Valo helped his team with an average of .402 and 24 RBI in 102 at bats. He has hit 13 homeruns while batting .311 this season. His 143 hits and 73 walks add up to a .408 on-base percentage. The NL Batter of the Month award goes to Duke Snider, Brooklyn's starting centerfielder. Duke pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .349 with 7 and 33 RBI while slugging .613. Snider has hit 35 bombs this year while batting .337. He adds 28 doubles, along with 93 runs scored. He's 1st in the NL in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI!
 
Tuesday 8/29/1952: Ewell Blackwell dominates Boston (N), gives up just 2 hits
BOSTON (N) - Cincinnati's right-hander Ewell Blackwell is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Boston (N) on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 19th time he has done it in his career. Blackwell (17-13) struck out 6 and issued 1 BB, throwing 68 of 110 pitches for strikes. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' The hitting star for Cincinnati was third baseman Bobby Adams, he went 2 for 3, hitting a double. The final score of the game was 1-0.
 
Monday 8/28/1952: Player of the Week honors go to Mcdougald and Gordon
The AL's best player of the week was Washington's Gil Mcdougald, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. He hit .522 with 9 RBI and slugged 1.000 in 23 at bats. The NL's best player of the week was Boston (N)'s Sid Gordon, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. Sid went 11 for 25 (.440), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 15 RBI. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! Gordon has hit for a .306 average this season. He has 54 extra base hits along with 257 total bases, resulting in a .550 slugging percentage. He's 10th in the NL in batting, 7th in homeruns and 2nd in RBI!
 
Sunday 8/27/1952: Cleveland's Avila severely injured, out for season
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's second baseman Bobby Avila will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Cleveland and Chicago (A). The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Avila collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Cleveland wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Avila had suffered a Torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament. Bobby is hitting .330 this year, with 155 hits in 470 at bats. He has driven in 68 runs, slugging .534. He's 6th in the AL in batting!
 
Monday 8/21/1952: Player of the Week honors go to Valo and Long
It's the 1st time that the AL Player of the Week award goes to Detroit's rightfielder Elmer Valo. He had an on base percentage of .586 and hit .520, while driving in 10 runs. It's the 3rd time that the NL Player of the Week award goes to Philadelphia (N)'s first baseman Dale Long. Dale was on fire, hitting .591 with 4 HR and 7 RBI. Dale has gone 117 for 423 (.277) this season, hitting 31 bombs and driving in 92 runs. He has scored 69 runs on his own. He's 5th in the NL in RBIs and 3rd in homeruns!
 
Sunday 8/20/1952: Hank Edwards out for 9 weeks
CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s rightfielder Hank Edwards will miss about 9 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 9th inning of the game between Chicago (N) and St. Louis (N). He dove for a drive off the bat of Danny Gardella, and immediately signaled that he's not OK after hitting the ground. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Torn Rib Cage Muscle which will require surgery. Hank is hitting .270 this year, with 85 hits in 315 at bats. He has driven in 43 runs, slugging .425.
 
Thursday 8/17/1952: Dale Mitchell (CHA) will miss 5-6 weeks
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s leftfielder Dale Mitchell hurt himself in the 3rd inning while diving for a batted ball. He got up slowly and had to leave the game. Dale Mitchell will miss at least 5-6 weeks. Mitchell was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Broken Ulna. Mitchell has hit for a .334 average this season. He has 24 extra base hits along with 174 total bases, resulting in a .434 slugging percentage. He's 6th in the AL in batting!
 
Monday 8/14/1952: Washington's Mcdougald wins Player of the Week award
Gil Mcdougald wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. AL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Gil pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .560 with 3 HR and 8 RBI while slugging 1.000. It's the 1st time that the NL Player of the Week award goes to Philadelphia (N)'s rightfielder Vic Wertz. Vic went 10 for 20 (.500), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 9 RBI.
 
Friday 8/11/1952: Art Houtteman (DET) will miss 7 weeks
DETROIT - When it rains, it pours. Detroit's right-hander Art Houtteman will not pitch for at least 7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Philadelphia (A) where he left the field in the 3rd inning. After being taken to a local hospital, Houtteman was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Bone Chips Elbow. Opposing players hit .258 against Art this season. While posting an ERA of 3.58 he went 12-10 in 31 starts, fanning 85 and walking 55 hitters. He has 4 complete games and 2 shutouts.
 
Monday 8/7/1952: Avila (CLE) and Gardella (SLN) win P.O.W. award
It's the 1st time that the AL Player of the Week award goes to Cleveland's second baseman Bobby Avila. He had an on base percentage of .515 and hit .483, while driving in 8 runs. While compiling an on base percentage of .401, Bobby hit .332 and slugged .529. He has collected 58 runs batted in this year. He's 9th in the AL in batting! Danny Gardella from St. Louis (N) wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the NL. Danny went 10 for 26 (.385), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 8 RBI.
 
Tuesday 8/1/1952: Mickey Mcdermott shuts out Cincinnati on 2 hits
ST. LOUIS (N) - Cincinnati's hitters looked uncomfortable, and St. Louis (N)'s Mickey Mcdermott didn't help them. The left-hander fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. Mcdermott (1-0) struck out 7 and walked 3, throwing 71 of 115 pitches for strikes. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' St. Louis (N)'s shortstop Solly Hemus collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, doubling once, scoring twice and collecting 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Mcdermott. St. Louis (N) improved its record to 50-55, scoring 9 runs on 9 hits.
 
Tuesday 8/1/1952: St. Louis (A)'s Fannin earns Pitcher of the Month award
St. Louis (A)'s Cliff Fannin had a terrific July, and it earned him the AL Pitcher of the month award. His record of 5-2 in 7 was among the leagues best this month. In 58 innings of work he allowed just 46 hits while striking out 21, compiling an ERA of just 2.17. This season Fannin compiled an ERA of 4.57, going 11-12 in 26 starts. He fanned 89 while giving up 185 hits in 183.1 innings. He's 8th in the AL in wins! Dick Donovan pitched like a legend in July, and the NL named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. His ERA of just 2.54 helped him to a 5-0 record in July. He worked 39 innings, striking out 11 hitters while walking 11. In 25 starts this year Dick struck out 68 batters in 178.1 innings of work. His ERA is 3.79, his record 15-6. He's 5th in the NL in ERA and 2nd in wins!
 
Tuesday 8/1/1952: Boston (N)'s Torgeson named Batter of the Month
New York (A)'s rightfielder Mickey Mantle had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the AL Batter of the Month. He had an on base percentage of .472 and hit .309, while driving in 24 runs. Mantle has walked 74 times this year and posts a .413 OBP. While batting .295, 104 for 353, he has driven in 95 runs. He's 1st in the AL in RBIs and 1st in homeruns! Earl Torgeson of Boston (N) wins his 1st Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the NL. Earl pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .357 with 9 and 26 RBI while slugging .724. His season numbers are: .305 AVG, 104 hits, 14 doubles, 4 triples and 23 homeruns, along with 69 RBI and 83 runs scored.
 
Monday 7/31/1952: Boston (A)'s Kiner wins Player of the Week award
Ralph Kiner from Boston (A) wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the AL. He had an on base percentage of .593 and hit .522, while driving in 14 runs. He has hit 28 taters while batting .235 this season. His 85 hits and 72 walks add up to a .361 on-base percentage. He's 2nd in the AL in RBIs and 3rd in homeruns! Chicago (N)'s pitcher Gene Conley had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the NL Player of the Week. Conley was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50. Along the way he struck out 6 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well.
 
Wednesday 7/26/1952: Ralph Kiner pounds three dingers
BOSTON (A) - Boston (A)'s first baseman Ralph Kiner flexed his muscles and displayed his tremendous power, homering three times in a 12-3 win over Chicago (A). A 409 foot drive to left-center marked his 1st bomb, a solo homerun off Lew Burdette in the 2nd inning. His 2nd shot, a three-run homerun off Lew Burdette in the 3rd inning, cleared the fence in left-center. His 3rd blast, a two-run homerun off Charley Schanz in the 4th inning, landed an estimated 440 feet from home plate. Overall he finished with 4 hits in 5 AB, doubling once, scoring three runs and driving in 7 runs. The final score of the game was 12-3.
 
Tuesday 7/25/1952: Bill Wight (NYY) will miss 7 weeks
NEW YORK (A) - New York (A) is without its lefty Bill Wight for at least 7 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Bob Dillinger in a game against Philadelphia (A). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Wight was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Ruptured Bicep Tendon. This season Wight compiled an ERA of 4.89, going 8-6 in 16 starts. He fanned 36 while giving up 129 hits in 108.2 innings. Bill has pitched one shutout and 5 complete games.
 
Monday 7/24/1952: Pesky (BOS) and Long (PHI) win P.O.W. award
Johnny Pesky wins his 1st Player of the Week award. AL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Johnny pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .538 with 0 HR and 4 RBI while slugging .731. The Player of the Week award in the NL goes to Philadelphia (N)'s Dale Long this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Dale pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .524 with 3 HR and 9 RBI while slugging 1.048.
 
Monday 7/17/1952: Junior Walsh pitches 2-hit shutout against Brooklyn
BROOKLYN - Junior Walsh had his best stuff going, and Brooklyn hitters were chanceless. Pittsburgh's right-hander fired a 2-hitter, his 1st shutout of the season. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Walsh (5-8) struck out 5 and issued 3 BB, throwing 65 of 107 pitches for strikes. Willie Mays helped Walsh at the plate, he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a double. Pittsburgh improved its record to 35-55, scoring 3 runs on 7 hits.
 
Monday 7/17/1952: Williams and Wyrostek win Player of the Week award
Ted Williams wins his 9th Player of the Week award. AL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Ted went 8 for 18 (.444), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 5 RBI. Williams has hit for a .349 average this season. He has 53 extra base hits along with 226 total bases, resulting in a .717 slugging percentage. He's 4th in the AL in batting, 1st in homeruns and 3rd in RBI! The NL's best player of the week was Philadelphia (N)'s Johnny Wyrostek, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Johnny was on fire, hitting .438 with 2 HR and 8 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .409, Johnny hit .331 and slugged .495. He has collected 33 runs batted in this year. He's 6th in the NL in batting!
 
Saturday 7/15/1952: Lou Brissie pitches his 2nd shutout of the season
PHILADELPHIA (A) - With his best stuff going, Philadelphia (A)'s Lou Brissie overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Washington had no chance, collecting just 2 hits against the lefty. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Brissie (7-10) fanned 3 and walked 2, throwing 94 pitches. Kermit Wahl helped Brissie at the plate, he got 1 hit in 2 AB. The final score of the game was 1-0.
 
Monday 7/10/1952: Evers (DET) and Northey (CIN) win P.O.W. award
Hoot Evers from Detroit wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the AL. He hit .500 with 11 RBI and slugged 1.000 in 18 at bats. His season features a batting average of .297 (55 hits in 185 AB), 13 doubles, one triple and 7 longballs. Evers collected 40 RBI and 32 runs as well. Sunday 7/9/1952: St. Louis (N)'s Wilhelm severely injured
ST. LOUIS (N) - St. Louis (N)'s right-hander Hoyt Wilhelm suffered a severe injury on Sunday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 3rd of the game against Pittsburgh he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Strained Back Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Hoyt has a record of 9-8 this season, with an ERA of 4.72. In 156.1 Innings he was able to strike out 86 batters. Hoyt has pitched 2 shutouts and 4 complete games.
 
Monday 7/3/1952: Brooklyn's Erskine wins Player of the Week award

Saturday 7/1/1952: New York (A)'s Ford earns Pitcher of the Month award
The best month of June in the AL certainly had New York (A)'s southpaw Whitey Ford, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. He struck out 31 hitters in his 8 starts, putting together a record of 6-0 while pitching 31 innings. His ERA in June was 1.30. Whitey fired two shutouts! Opposing players hit .240 against Whitey this season. While posting an ERA of 2.83 he went 11-4 in 22 starts, fanning 69 and walking 60 hitters. He has 2 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 1st in the AL in ERA and 4th in wins! Philadelphia (N)'s pitcher Billy Pierce is the NL winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in June. He started 7 games in June, going 5-0 and compiling an ERA of 2.21 in 57 innings. Billy fanned 41 hitters. Billy pitched a shutout as well. Saturday 7/1/1952: Batter of the Month award winners announced
Roy Sievers of St. Louis (A) wins his 2nd Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the AL. Roy was on fire, hitting .369 with 12 homeruns and 32 RBI. He has hit 23 taters while batting .333 this season. His 93 hits and 51 walks add up to a .434 on-base percentage. He's 9th in the AL in batting, 3rd in homeruns and 3rd in RBI! It's the 1st time that the NL Batter of the Month award goes to St. Louis (N)'s rightfielder Jackie Jensen. Jackie pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .393 with 7 and 20 RBI while slugging .697. His season numbers are: .300 AVG, 75 hits, 10 doubles, 2 triples and 13 taters, along with 34 RBI and 37 runs scored.
 
Friday 6/30/1952: Whitey Ford blanks Chicago (A) with a 2-hitter
CHICAGO (A) - Good things can happen when you throw strikes. And Whitey Ford did so today, in a 2-hit shutout against Chicago (A). 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Ford (11-4) struck out 3 and issued 1 BB, throwing 67 of 104 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for New York (A) was rightfielder Mickey Mantle, he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting two dingers, scoring two runs with 5 RBI. New York (A) scored 9 runs on 11 hits.
 
Thursday 6/29/1952: Bob Rush pitches 2-hit shutout against St. Louis (N)
CHICAGO (N) - Bob Rush had some fun again. St. Louis (N) hitters did not. Chicago (N)'s right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 6 career shutouts in 157 games started. Rush (11-8) fanned 9 and walked 5, throwing 145 pitches. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Carl Sawatski helped Rush at the plate, he got 2 hits in 3 AB, homering twice, scoring two runs and driving in 3 runs. Chicago (N) improved its record to 38-41, scoring 5 runs on 10 hits.
 
Monday 6/26/1952: Boston (N)'s Gordon wins Player of the Week award
Roy Sievers wins his 3rd Player of the Week award. AL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. In 24 at bats he hit .500 with 3 HR and 10 RBI. Roy managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. Roy is hitting .332 this year, with 87 hits in 262 at bats. He has driven in 61 runs, slugging .603. He's 6th in the AL in RBIs and 4th in homeruns! The NL's best player of the week was Boston (N)'s Sid Gordon, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. He hit .500 with 12 RBI and slugged 1.042 in 24 at bats. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! This year Gordon drove in 48 and scored 48 runs while batting .288 with 16 taters.

The AL's best player of the week was Chicago (A)'s Gus Zernial, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. He had an on base percentage of .467 and hit .407, while driving in 16 runs. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! The Player of the Week award in the NL goes to Cincinnati's Ron Northey this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He had an on base percentage of .419 and hit .400, while driving in 12 runs. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well!
 
Wednesday 6/14/1952: Al Rosen nabs five hits against Philadelphia (A)
CLEVELAND - Al Rosen punished Philadelphia (A)'s pitching today, collecting five hits in 5 AB. That definitely helped Cleveland, they won the game 12 to 5. His 2nd hit, a two-run homerun off Alex Kellner in the 3rd inning, cleared the fence in left field. The game was tied, 2-2, after the blast. His 5th hit, off Ed Klieman in the 8th inning, was a GRAND SLAM and cleared the fence in left-center. He had singles in the 1st inning , in the 6th and in the 7th . Al scored 4 runs, and he collected 6 RBI as well! He is hitting .313 this season, with 7 HR and 35 RBI.
 
Monday 6/12/1952: Player of the Week honors go to Williams and Gardella
Ted Williams wins his 8th Player of the Week award. AL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He had an on base percentage of .548 and hit .458, while driving in 12 runs. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. St. Louis (N)'s leftfielder Danny Gardella had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the NL Player of the Week. Gardella helped his team with an average of .448 and 11 RBI in 29 at bats. Danny is hitting .333 this year, with 72 hits in 216 at bats. He has driven in 49 runs, slugging .602. He's 3rd in the NL in batting, 4th in homeruns and 4th in RBI!
 
Sunday 6/11/1952: Don Newcombe dominates Cincinnati, gives up just 2 hits
BROOKLYN - With his best stuff going, Brooklyn's Don Newcombe overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Cincinnati had no chance, collecting just 2 hits against the right-hander. Newcombe (10-2) fanned 4 and walked none, throwing 99 pitches. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Duke Snider helped Newcombe at the plate, he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, homering once, doubling once, scoring two runs and collecting 3 RBI. Brooklyn improved its record to 37-26, scoring 7 runs on 9 hits.
 
Sunday 6/11/1952: Season ending injury strikes Cleveland's Doby
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's centerfielder Larry Doby suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself diving for a ball. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Broken Wrist. Surgery will be performed next week. Doby has hit for a .338 average this season. He has 29 extra base hits along with 139 total bases, resulting in a .644 slugging percentage. He's 1st in the AL in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns!
 
Monday 6/5/1952: Feller (CLE) and Pafko (CHN) win P.O.W. award
Bob Feller of Cleveland wins his 1st Player of the Week award for dominating AL's hitters the entire week. Bob went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.06, while fanning 17 in 17 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. The NL Player of the Week award goes to Andy Pafko, Chicago (N)'s starting centerfielder. In 20 at bats he hit .600 with 3 HR and 14 RBI. Andy managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week.
 
Thursday 6/1/1952: Cleveland's Feller earns Pitcher of the Month award
Winner of this months AL Pitcher of the Month award is Cleveland's Bob Feller. He went 5-0 in May and finished the month with an ERA of 4.50. He struck out 46 in 64 innings. Bob fired two shutouts! Bob has a record of 9-3 this season, with an ERA of 4.42. In 118 Innings he was able to strike out 79 batters. He has 6 complete games and 3 shutouts. He's 2nd in the AL in wins! Philadelphia (N)'s pitcher Curt Simmons is the NL winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in May. His ERA of just 2.10 helped him to a 5-2 record in May. He worked 68.2 innings, striking out 32 hitters while walking 18. Curt pitched a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .252 against Curt this season. While posting an ERA of 2.89 he went 6-5 in 15 starts, fanning 56 and walking 34 hitters. Curt has pitched one shutout and 6 complete games.
 
Thursday 6/1/1952: Red hot Noren and Snider win Batter of the Month award
Washington's centerfielder Irv Noren had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the AL Batter of the Month. Irv went 42 for 95 (.442), while hitting 6 HR and collecting 26 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .486, Irv hit .383 and slugged .629. He has collected 35 runs batted in this year. He's 1st in the AL in batting! The Batter of the Month award in the NL goes to Brooklyn's Duke Snider this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Duke pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .333 with 11 and 23 RBI while slugging .742. His season numbers are: .356 AVG, 69 hits, 9 doubles, no triples and 17 bombs, along with 45 RBI and 42 runs scored. He's 1st in the NL in batting, 1st in homeruns and 3rd in RBI!
 
Monday 5/29/1952: Philadelphia (N)'s Simmons wins Player of the Week award
The AL's best player of the week was Detroit's Charlie Keller, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. Charlie went 11 for 21 (.524), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 5 RBI. Charlie is hitting .278 this year, with 45 hits in 162 at bats. He has driven in 23 runs, slugging .463. Philadelphia (N)'s pitcher Curt Simmons had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the NL Player of the Week. Simmons was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.59. Along the way he struck out 6 in 17 innings. He hurled a shutout as well.
 
Wednesday 5/24/1952: Bob Elliott has 2000th career hits
BOSTON (N) - Boston (N)'s Bob Elliott showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against Philadelphia (N) on Wednesday. His best year so far was 1951 where he hit .314 with 21 homeruns and 95 RBI. 'Good things happen when you put the bat on the ball.' His hit in the 7th inning was a double off Billy Pierce.
 
Monday 5/22/1952: Hutchinson (BOS) and Hodges (BRO) win P.O.W. award
The AL's best player of the week was Boston (A)'s Fred Hutchinson, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.00 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. Gil Hodges wins his 4th Player of the Week award. NL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Hodges helped his team with an average of .429 and 8 RBI in 21 at bats. Gil is hitting .295 this year, with 46 hits in 156 at bats. He has driven in 39 runs, slugging .590. He's 1st in the NL in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns!
 
Sunday 5/21/1952: Fred Hutchinson shuts out St. Louis (A) on 2 hits
BOSTON (A) - Fred Hutchinson had his best stuff going, and St. Louis (A) hitters had nothing to cheer about. Boston (A)'s right-hander pitched a 2-hitter, his 2nd shutout of the season. Hutchinson (6-4) struck out 2 and walked 1, throwing 60 of 93 pitches for strikes. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Ted Williams helped Hutchinson at the plate, he collected 1 hit in 3 trips to the plate, hitting a homerun, and collecting 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 4-0.
 
Monday 5/15/1952: New York (A)'s Dimaggio wins Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the AL goes to New York (A)'s Joe Dimaggio this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He had an on base percentage of .567 and hit .519, while driving in 11 runs. Marv Rackley from Cincinnati wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the NL. Rackley helped his team with an average of .560 and 3 RBI in 25 at bats. Rackley has walked 3 times this year and posts a .260 OBP. While batting .248, 36 for 145, he has driven in 9 runs.
 
Friday 5/12/1952: Hoyt Wilhelm fires NO-NO against New York (N)
NEW YORK (N) - St. Louis (N)'s right-hander Hoyt Wilhelm made some history today, firing a no-hitter against New York (N). Their hitters found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, never having a chance against his overpowering stuff. Wes Westrum spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with 2 away in the 5th inning. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him. He was the main reason I accomplished this feat.' Wilhelm (4-3) fanned 5 and walked 1, throwing 91 pitches. St. Louis (N)'s rightfielder Bill Howerton finished 3 for 3, hitting a homerun, with 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Wilhelm. St. Louis (N) improved its record to 17-19, scoring 5 runs on 11 hits.
 
Thursday 5/11/1952: Bob Feller blanks Philadelphia (A) with a 2-hitter
PHILADELPHIA (A) - Cleveland's right-hander Bob Feller is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Philadelphia (A) on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 42nd time he has done it in his career. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Feller (7-3) struck out 8 and issued 1 BB, throwing 67 of 111 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Cleveland was leftfielder Jim Lemon, he went 2 for 5, hitting a homerun, with 5 RBI. The final score of the game was 8-0.
 
Monday 5/8/1952: Philadelphia (N)'s Pierce wins Player of the Week award
Larry Doby wins his 1st Player of the Week award. AL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. In 25 at bats he hit .440 with 5 HR and 9 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .489, Larry hit .383 and slugged .791. He has collected 38 runs batted in this year. He's 6th in the AL in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI! The NL Player of the Week award goes to Billy Pierce, one of Philadelphia (N)'s best starting pitchers. Pierce was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50. Along the way he struck out 10 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. This season Pierce compiled an ERA of 3.08, going 5-1 in 8 starts. He fanned 38 while giving up 57 hits in 61.1 innings. He has 3 complete games and one shutout. He's 2nd in the NL in ERA and 3rd in wins!

BOSTON (A) - Sam Jones had his best stuff going, and Boston (A) hitters were chanceless. Philadelphia (A)'s right-hander fired a NO-NO, his 1st shutout of the season. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Jones (2-3) struck out 8 and walked 4, throwing 63 of 111 pitches for strikes. Hank Schenz helped Jones at the plate, he finished with 3 hits in 3 AB. Philadelphia (A) scored 2 runs on 7 hits.
 
Monday 5/1/1952: Chicago (N)'s Minner named Pitcher of the Month
Mel Parnell couldn't have pitched much better than he did in April, and the AL thought so as well, naming the southpaw Pitcher of the Month. He went 5-1 in April and finished the month with an ERA of 2.42. He struck out 15 in 52 innings. Mel also fired a shutout. Chicago (N)'s Paul Minner had a terrific April, and it earned him the NL Pitcher of the month award. His record of 5-2 in 7 was among the leagues best this month. In 56 innings of work he allowed just 62 hits while striking out 23, compiling an ERA of just 3.38. Paul pitched a shutout as well.

The AL's best player of the month was Boston (A)'s Del Ennis, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. He hit .408 with 34 RBI and slugged .765 in 98 at bats. The NL Batter of the Month award goes to Alvin Dark, New York (N)'s starting shortstop. In 90 at bats he hit .389 with 5 HR and 24 RBI.

He's 2nd in the AL in RBIs and 6th in homeruns! New York (N)'s shortstop Alvin Dark had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the NL Player of the Week. Alvin pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .462 with 3 HR and 10 RBI while slugging .923. He has hit 5 longballs while batting .389 this season. His 35 hits and 6 walks add up to a .434 on-base percentage. He's 2nd in the NL in batting and 1st in RBI!
 
Monday 4/24/1952: Parnell (BOS) and Sauer (CHN) win P.O.W. award
Boston (A)'s pitcher Mel Parnell had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the AL Player of the Week. Mel went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.50, while fanning 7 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. It's the 3rd time that the NL Player of the Week award goes to Chicago (N)'s leftfielder Hank Sauer. In 23 at bats he hit .348 with 3 HR and 8 RBI. Sauer has walked 8 times this year and posts a .358 OBP. While batting .288, 21 for 73, he has driven in 18 runs. He's 2nd in the NL in RBIs and 3rd in homeruns!
 
Saturday 4/22/1952: Gus Zernial uncorks cycle hits against Cleveland
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s leftfielder Gus Zernial accomplished a difficult feat in a game against Cleveland, hitting for the cycle to improve his career batting average to .244! His 1st hit, off Mike Garcia in the 2nd inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left field. A single in the 3rd off Mike Garcia accounted for his 2nd hit. In the 5th inning he belted a double off Mike Garcia. His 4th hit was a triple off Mike Garcia in the 8th inning. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Gus did drive in one while scoring 2 runs on his own. His 4 hit performance increases his batting average to .297. He becomes the 5th player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. On 8/12/1950, Andy Seminick was the last player to hit for the cycle.
 
Saturday 4/22/1952: Chicago (A)'s Miller severely injured
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s ace Bill Miller suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 5-6 weeks. In the 6th of the game against Cleveland he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Miller was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle. In 5 starts this year Bill struck out 18 batters in 31.1 innings of work. His ERA is 4.60, his record 1-3.
 
Monday 4/17/1952: Trucks (DET) and Hodges (BRO) win P.O.W. award
The AL Player of the Week award goes to Virgil Trucks, one of Detroit's best starting pitchers. Virgil went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.62, while fanning 8 in 16.2 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. Gil Hodges wins his 3rd Player of the Week award. NL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He hit .429 with 12 RBI and slugged 1.000 in 21 at bats. He has hit 5 bombs while batting .273 this season. His 12 hits and 9 walks add up to a .382 on-base percentage. He's 3rd in the NL in RBIs and 1st in homeruns!
 
Thursday 4/13/1952: Bill Nicholson has 2000th career hits
PHILADELPHIA (A) - Philadelphia (A)'s rightfielder Bill Nicholson joined some elite company today, collecting his 2000th career hit! With two outs in the 2nd inning, Bill drilled a double, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. In 14 years of big league action so far, Bill has compiled a batting average of .283, along with 325 homeruns and 1347 RBI. 'Wow. That is all I can say now. I'm thrilled.'
 
Monday 4/10/1952: Boston (N)'s Stephens wins Player of the Week award
It's the 1st time that the AL Player of the Week award goes to Washington's first baseman Bob Boyd. Bob was on fire, hitting .542 with 2 HR and 9 RBI. The NL's best player of the week was Boston (N)'s Vern Stephens, who wins the award for the 5th time in his career. Stephens helped his team with an average of .462 and 7 RBI in 26 at bats.
 
Wednesday 4/5/1952: Boston (A)'s Bobby Doerr laces 2000th career hit
BOSTON (A) - Boston (A)'s second baseman Bobby Doerr was in good mood after the game against New York (A), and he had every reason as he made some history while collecting his 2000th career hit. His best year so far was 1938 where he hit .290 with 16 homeruns and 89 RBI. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.' He hit a single in the 3rd off Whitey Ford for number 2000.
