Tuesday 10/3/1951: Newhouser and Blackwell receive Best Pitcher Award
The 1951 AL Best Pitcher Award winner is from Detroit this year. Hal Newhouser put together impressive numbers on the mound this season. His ERA of 2.73 helped him to a 26-9 record this year. He struck out 224 and walked 117 in 346 innings. He has 20 complete games and 4 shutouts. He's 1st in the AL in ERA and 1st in wins! The 1951 NL Best Pitcher Award winner is from Cincinnati this year. Ewell Blackwell put together impressive numbers on the mound this season as well. His ERA of 3.04 helped him to a 26-10 record this year. He struck out 256 and walked 155 in 349 innings. He has 23 complete games and 3 shutouts. He's 1st in the NL in ERA and 3rd in wins!
 
Tuesday 10/3/1951: Williams and Snider win Best Hitter Award
A season for the ages earned Boston (A)'s leftfielder Ted Williams the AL Best Hitter Award this year. His season features a batting average of .382 (194 hits in 508 AB), 32 doubles, 2 triples and 51 taters. Williams collected 147 RBI and 155 runs as well. HE HAS WON THE TRIPLE CROWN!!! Williams wins the award for the 2nd time in his 9-year career. A season for the ages earned Brooklyn's centerfielder Duke Snider the NL Best Hitter Award this year. Duke is hitting .320 this year, with 183 hits in 571 at bats. He has driven in 133 runs, slugging .618. He's 6th in the NL in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI! Snider wins the award for the 2nd time in his 4-year career.
 
Tuesday 10/3/1951: Newcomer of the Year Award winners announced
Getting an award is a nice way to start a career. Washington's Gil Mcdougald smiled as he was named the AL Newcomer of the Year Award winner. Gil has gone 163 for 537 (.304) this season, hitting 19 bombs and driving in 90 runs. He has scored 85 runs on his own. The 1951 NL Newcomer of the Year Award winner is from Boston (N) this season. Sam Jethroe put together impressive numbers for a rookie en route to win the first major award of his career. Let's hope more will follow for this 33 year old ballplayer. Sam is hitting .301 this year, with 154 hits in 511 at bats. He has driven in 77 runs, slugging .499.
 
Sunday 10/1/1951: Fox and Brecheen receive Pitcher of the Month award
Chicago (A)'s Howie Fox had a terrific September, and it earned him the AL Pitcher of the month award. He had an ERA of just 2.36 in 42 innings of work in which he struck out 20 hitters. His record in September is 5-0. His ERA of 4.35 helped him to a 21-9 record this year. He struck out 100 and walked 137 in 295.2 innings. Howie has pitched one shutout and 14 complete games. He's 3rd in the AL in wins! It's the 1st time that the NL Pitcher of the Month award goes to St. Louis (N)'s pitcher Harry Brecheen. He had an ERA of just 2.47 in 58.1 innings of work in which he struck out 36 hitters. His record in September is 6-0. His ERA of 3.50 helped him to a 27-10 record this year. He struck out 173 and walked 105 in 342.1 innings. Harry has pitched one shutout and 17 complete games. He's 4th in the NL in ERA and 2nd in wins!

Ted Williams of Boston (A) wins his 3rd Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the AL. Ted pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .414 with 6 and 14 RBI while slugging .729. His season features a batting average of .382 (194 hits in 508 AB), 32 doubles, 2 triples and 51 bombs. Williams collected 147 RBI and 155 runs as well. HE HAS WON THE TRIPLE CROWN!!! Saturday 9/30/1951: Boston (A)'s Parnell out for 4-5 weeks
BOSTON (A) - Boston (A)'s lefty Mel Parnell suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 4-5 weeks. In the 5th of the game against Boston (N) he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Torn Bicep Muscle. This season Parnell compiled an ERA of 4.63, going 18-16 in 41 starts. He fanned 113 while giving up 339 hits in 303 innings. He has 16 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 8th in the AL in wins!
 
Monday 9/25/1951: Player of the Week honors go to Noren and Gordon
Irv Noren wins his 1st Player of the Week award. AL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Irv went 8 for 16 (.500), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 6 RBI. The NL Player of the Week award goes to Sid Gordon, Boston (N)'s starting leftfielder. Sid pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .481 with 4 HR and 9 RBI while slugging .963.
 
Saturday 9/23/1951: Chicago (N) has no chance in a 2-hitter by Red Munger
ST. LOUIS (N) - St. Louis (N)'s Red Munger overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Chicago (N) had no chance, collecting just 2 hits against the right-hander. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Munger (16-11) struck out 3 and issued 3 BB, throwing 65 of 110 pitches for strikes. St. Louis (N)'s leftfielder Stan Musial finished with 2 hits in 4 AB. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Munger. St. Louis (N) scored 2 runs on 7 hits.
 
Saturday 9/23/1951: It's NO-NO time for Bob Feller against Philadelphia (A)
PHILADELPHIA (A) - Cleveland's right-hander Bob Feller is a really great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking Philadelphia (A) on no hits. Kermit Wahl spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with 2 away in the 8th inning. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him. He was the main reason I accomplished this feat.' Feller (19-17) struck out 5 and issued 2 BB, throwing 62 of 99 pitches for strikes. Cleveland's third baseman Al Rosen went 2 for 5, blasting a homerun, scoring twice and collecting 4 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Feller. Cleveland improved its record to 86-67, scoring 15 runs on 19 hits.
 
Monday 9/18/1951: Mullin and Minner win Player of the Week award
Detroit's rightfielder Pat Mullin had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the AL Player of the Week. Pat was on fire, hitting .444 with 3 HR and 7 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! Paul Minner of Chicago (N) wins his 1st Player of the Week award for dominating NL's hitters the entire week. Minner was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.50. Along the way he struck out 9 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well.
 
Thursday 9/14/1951: Bob Feller shuts out St. Louis (A) on 2 hits
CLEVELAND - Bob Feller had some fun again. St. Louis (A) hitters did not. Cleveland's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 39 career shutouts in 431 games started. Feller (18-16) fanned 7 and walked none, throwing 119 pitches. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Cleveland's second baseman Bobby Avila got 2 hits in 2 AB, blasting a homerun, doubling once, scoring FOUR runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Feller. Cleveland scored 6 runs on 9 hits.
 
Tuesday 9/12/1951: Boston (A)'s Ted Williams clears fence three times
BOSTON (A) - Ted Williams was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Boston (A) to a 11-4 win over Detroit by homering three times. A pitch from Art Houtteman in the 1st inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 450 feet from home plate in right-center. His 2nd shot, off Saul Rogovin in the 7th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left field. His 3rd shot, a two-run homerun off Saul Rogovin in the 8th inning, cleared the fence in right field. Overall he went 4 for 4, scoring FIVE runs and collecting 4 RBI. Ted Williams was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 6/30/1951.
 
Monday 9/11/1951: Cleveland's Garcia wins Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the AL goes to Cleveland's Mike Garcia this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Garcia was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 3.18. Along the way he struck out 15 in 17 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. Duke Snider wins his 5th Player of the Week award. NL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Snider helped his team with an average of .500 and 7 RBI in 18 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Snider has walked 83 times this year and posts a .416 OBP. While batting .323, 169 for 524, he has driven in 128 runs. He's 5th in the NL in batting, 1st in homeruns and 2nd in RBI!
 
Monday 9/4/1951: Chicago (N)'s Sauer wins Player of the Week award
Yogi Berra wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. AL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Berra helped his team with an average of .478 and 8 RBI in 23 at bats. The Player of the Week award in the NL goes to Chicago (N)'s Hank Sauer this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Hank pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .409 with 4 HR and 8 RBI while slugging 1.091. Hank is hitting .304 this year, with 152 hits in 500 at bats. He has driven in 122 runs, slugging .604. He's 1st in the NL in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns!
 
Saturday 9/2/1951: Red Munger pitches 2-hit shutout against Philadelphia (N)
ST. LOUIS (N) - St. Louis (N)'s Red Munger overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Philadelphia (N) had no chance, collecting just 2 hits against the right-hander. Fred Marsh spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he doubled with two outs in the 5th inning. Munger (13-9) fanned 6 and walked 1, throwing 103 pitches. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' The hitting star for St. Louis (N) was third baseman Bill Howerton, he stroked 3 hits in 4 AB, doubling twice. St. Louis (N) improved its record to 66-69, scoring 4 runs on 11 hits.
 
Friday 9/1/1951: Detroit's Newhouser earns Pitcher of the Month award
Detroit's pitcher Hal Newhouser is the AL winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in August. He started 7 games in August, going 6-0 and compiling an ERA of 1.66 in 59.2 innings. Friday 9/1/1951: Batter of the Month award winners announced
The AL's best player of the month was St. Louis (A)'s Dick Kokos, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Dick was on fire, hitting .326 with 10 homeruns and 35 RBI. Dick has gone 124 for 434 (.286) this season, hitting 28 homeruns and driving in 101 runs. He has scored 82 runs on his own. He's 4th in the AL in RBIs and 5th in homeruns! The NL Batter of the Month award goes to Alvin Dark, New York (N)'s starting shortstop. Alvin pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .417 with 8 and 29 RBI while slugging .738. Dark has hit 19 longballs this year while batting .373. He adds 34 doubles, along with 86 runs scored. He's 1st in the NL in batting and 10th in RBI!
 
Tuesday 8/29/1951: Detroit's Keller out for 5 weeks
DETROIT - Detroit's Charlie Keller suffered a serious injury Tuesday in a game against Boston (A). Keller fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 5 weeks. Detroit wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Keller had suffered a Pulled Back Muscle. Keller has hit 21 homeruns this year while batting .252. He adds 19 doubles, along with 85 runs scored.
 
Monday 8/28/1951: New York (N)'s Dark wins Player of the Week award
St. Louis (A)'s rightfielder Dick Kokos had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the AL Player of the Week. Dick pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .429 with 4 HR and 12 RBI while slugging 1.095. Kokos has hit 28 longballs this year while batting .288. He adds 26 doubles, along with 81 runs scored. He's 5th in the AL in RBIs and 5th in homeruns! The NL's best player of the week was New York (N)'s Alvin Dark, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. In 25 at bats he hit .560 with 4 HR and 12 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 8 game hitting streak right now.
 
Monday 8/21/1951: Wakefield (CHA) and Thomson (NYN) win P.O.W. award
Dick Wakefield wins his 1st Player of the Week award. AL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He had an on base percentage of .484 and hit .448, while driving in 13 runs. The Player of the Week award in the NL goes to New York (N)'s Bobby Thomson this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He had an on base percentage of .419 and hit .400, while driving in 7 runs. He has hit 23 longballs while batting .300 this season. His 136 hits and 52 walks add up to a .369 on-base percentage.
 
Friday 8/18/1951: Warren Hacker pitches 2-hit shutout against Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's hitters looked uncomfortable, and Chicago (N)'s Warren Hacker didn't help them. The right-hander fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. Hacker (9-14) struck out 8 and walked none, throwing 64 of 103 pitches for strikes. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Bill Serena helped Hacker at the plate, he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, homering once, and driving in 3 runs. The final score of the game was 5-0.
 
Wednesday 8/16/1951: Boston (A)'s Hutchinson out for 5 weeks
BOSTON (A) - Boston (A)'s right-hander Fred Hutchinson suffered a severe injury on Wednesday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 2nd of the game against Philadelphia (A) he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After being taken to a local hospital, Hutchinson was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Bone Chips Elbow. This season Hutchinson compiled an ERA of 3.48, going 21-5 in 32 starts. He fanned 99 while giving up 253 hits in 243.1 innings. Fred has pitched 3 shutouts and 11 complete games. He's 4th in the AL in ERA and 1st in wins!
 
Monday 8/14/1951: Chicago (N)'s Cavarretta wins Player of the Week award
It's the 1st time that the AL Player of the Week award goes to Detroit's pitcher Hal Newhouser. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.50 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. He now has 38 career shutouts in 415 games started. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Newhouser (19-7) struck out 7 and issued 1 BB, throwing 67 of 99 pitches for strikes. Jerry Priddy helped Newhouser at the plate, he finished 2 for 4, homering once, stroking a double, scoring three times and driving in 3 runs. Detroit scored 8 runs on 14 hits.
 
Monday 8/7/1951: Kokos (SLA) and Maxwell (PIT) win P.O.W. award
The AL Player of the Week award goes to Dick Kokos, St. Louis (A)'s starting rightfielder. In 29 at bats he hit .448 with 4 HR and 9 RBI. He has hit 21 bombs while batting .284 this season. His 103 hits and 64 walks add up to a .392 on-base percentage. He's 7th in the AL in RBIs and 6th in homeruns! The NL Player of the Week award goes to Charlie Maxwell, Pittsburgh's starting leftfielder. Charlie was on fire, hitting .423 with 6 HR and 13 RBI.
 
Thursday 8/3/1951: Ewell Blackwell quiets Philadelphia (N) bats with shutout
CINCINNATI - Great days are rare. But not for Cincinnati's right-hander Ewell Blackwell. Philadelphia (N) found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 18th time he has done it in his career. Blackwell (18-7) struck out 7 and issued 2 BB, throwing 70 of 113 pitches for strikes. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Marv Rackley helped Blackwell at the plate, he got 3 hits in 4 AB, scoring two runs. The final score of the game was 4-0.
 
Wednesday 8/2/1951: Fred Martin (SLN) will miss 5 weeks
ST. LOUIS (N) - When it rains, it pours. St. Louis (N)'s right-hander Fred Martin will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Cincinnati where he left the field in the 7th inning. Martin was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Bone Chips Shoulder. Fred has a record of 12-5 this season, with an ERA of 3.16. In 174 Innings he was able to strike out 63 batters. He has 5 complete games and one shutout. He's 3rd in the NL in ERA and 9th in wins!

The AL's best player of the week was Boston (A)'s Vern Stephens, who wins the award for the 4th time in his career. Vern went 9 for 16 (.563), while hitting 1 HR and collecting 12 RBI. The Player of the Week award in the AL goes to Boston (A)'s Gil Hodges this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Gil went 6 for 17 (.353), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 8 RBI. Hodges has walked 42 times this year and posts a .370 OBP. While batting .294, 102 for 347, he has driven in 71 runs. CLEVELAND - Howie Pollet had his best stuff going, and Cleveland hitters were chanceless. Boston (A)'s lefty fired a 1-hitter, his 2nd shutout of the season. Pollet (10-3) struck out 3 and walked 3, throwing 68 of 114 pitches for strikes. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Ralph Kiner provided Boston (A) with the offense Pollet needed as he stroked 4 hits in 5 AB, homering twice, stroking two 2B's, scoring three times with 9 RBI. The final score of the game was 20-0.

CLEVELAND - Cleveland's right-hander Mike Garcia suffered a severe injury on Tuesday and will be out for at least 7-8 weeks. In the 2nd of the game against Philadelphia (A) he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Garcia was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Ted has gone 97 for 262 (.370) this season, hitting 26 homeruns and driving in 80 runs. He has scored 81 runs on his own. He's 1st in the AL in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI! Brooklyn's first baseman Gil Hodges had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the NL Batter of the Month. Hodges helped his team with an average of .337 and 25 RBI in 95 at bats. Hodges has hit for a .292 average this season. He has 34 extra base hits along with 161 total bases, resulting in a .540 slugging percentage. He's 8th in the NL in RBIs and 5th in homeruns!
 
Friday 6/30/1951: Ted Williams homers three times against Chicago (A)
BOSTON (A) - Ted Williams was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Boston (A) to a 6-5 win over Chicago (A) by homering three times. His 1st shot, a three-run homerun off Bob Porterfield in the 1st inning, cleared the fence in right field. His 2nd shot, off Bob Porterfield in the 3rd inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left field. In the 5th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Bob Porterfield. Overall he finished with 3 hits in 4 AB, with three runs scored with 5 RBI. Al Rosen was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 8/16/1950.
 
Wednesday 6/28/1951: Cincinnati's Marv Rackley laces six hits
BOSTON (N) - Marv Rackley punished Boston (N)'s pitching today, collecting six hits in 6 AB. That definitely helped Cincinnati, they won the game 11 to 2. In the 3rd inning he unloaded a triple off Dick Donovan. He collected singles in the 1st inning , in the 5th inning , in the 6th , in the 8th inning and in the 9th . Marv scored 3 runs. He didn't collect any RBIs, though. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 93 hits in 291 at bats, resulting in a .320 batting average.

Detroit's pitcher Art Houtteman had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the AL Player of the Week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.08 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. Hank Sauer wins his 1st Player of the Week award. NL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. In 23 at bats he hit .522 with 2 HR and 9 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. His season features a batting average of .315 (91 hits in 289 AB), 21 doubles, no triples and 20 taters. Sauer collected 70 RBI and 53 runs as well. He's 1st in the NL in RBIs and 4th in homeruns!
 
Saturday 6/24/1951: St. Louis (A)'s Roy Sievers laces five hits
ST. LOUIS (A) - Roy Sievers is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. His 2nd hit, off Bob Feller in the 3rd inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in center field. It tied the ballgame at 3. His 3rd hit, a solo homerun off Bob Feller in the 5th inning, cleared the fence in left-center. It tied the ballgame at 5. His 4th hit was a double off Sam Zoldak in the 8th inning. He collected singles in the 1st and in the 9th inning (one RBI). Roy scored 3 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! He is hitting .275 this season, with 16 HR and 48 RBI. St. Louis (A) improved its record to 33-41, scoring 11 runs on 17 hits.
 
Monday 6/19/1951: Detroit's Mullin wins Player of the Week award
Detroit's rightfielder Pat Mullin had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the AL Player of the Week. In 24 at bats he hit .333 with 5 HR and 12 RBI. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! While compiling an on base percentage of .382, Pat hit .289 and slugged .532. He has collected 41 runs batted in this year. The NL's best player of the week was New York (N)'s Monte Irvin, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Irvin helped his team with an average of .652 and 11 RBI in 23 at bats.
 
Tuesday 6/13/1951: Stubby Overmire (SLA) will miss 5 weeks
ST. LOUIS (A) - St. Louis (A) is without its southpaw Stubby Overmire for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Lou Boudreau in a game against Cleveland. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Tricep Muscle. Stubby has a record of 6-6 this season, with an ERA of 4.62. In 117 Innings he was able to strike out 23 batters.
 
Monday 6/12/1951: Mcdougald (WS1) and Pafko (CHN) win P.O.W. award
The AL's best player of the week was Washington's Gil Mcdougald, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Gil went 12 for 21 (.571), while hitting 1 HR and collecting 5 RBI. Mcdougald has hit 7 longballs this year while batting .346. He adds 16 doubles, along with 34 runs scored. He's 8th in the AL in batting and 10th in RBI! Andy Pafko wins his 4th Player of the Week award. NL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Andy went 13 for 24 (.542), while hitting 1 HR and collecting 3 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 10 game hitting streak right now.
 
Sunday 6/11/1951: Hank Borowy out for 7-8 weeks
PHILADELPHIA (N) - Philadelphia (N)'s right-hander Hank Borowy suffered a severe injury on Sunday and will be out for at least 7-8 weeks. In the 1st of the game against Chicago (N) he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Torn Bicep Muscle. His ERA of 4.43 helped him to a 8-4 record this year. He struck out 60 and walked 38 in 122 innings. He's 5th in the NL in wins!
 
Monday 6/5/1951: Berra and Brown win Player of the Week award
New York (A)'s catcher Yogi Berra had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the AL Player of the Week. He had an on base percentage of .560 and hit .545, while driving in 10 runs. Chicago (N)'s third baseman Bobby Brown had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the NL Player of the Week. He had an on base percentage of .563 and hit .500, while driving in 6 runs. Brown has hit for a .277 average this season. He has 9 extra base hits along with 67 total bases, resulting in a .356 slugging percentage.
 
Thursday 6/1/1951: Newhouser and Benton receive Pitcher of the Month award
Hal Newhouser couldn't have pitched much better than he did in May, and the AL thought so as well, naming the lefty Pitcher of the Month. His ERA of just 2.31 helped him to a 6-0 record in May. He worked 62.1 innings, striking out 47 hitters while walking 20. Hal also fired a shutout. This season Newhouser compiled an ERA of 2.77, going 8-4 in 15 starts. He fanned 79 while giving up 103 hits in 120 innings. Hal has pitched one shutout and 6 complete games. He's 1st in the AL in ERA and 4th in wins! Winner of this months NL Pitcher of the Month award is Boston (N)'s Al Benton. He started 6 games in May, going 4-0 and compiling an ERA of 1.93 in 46.2 innings. Al fanned 18 hitters. His ERA of 4.19 helped him to a 5-2 record this year. He struck out 33 and walked 37 in 81.2 innings.

The Player of the Week award in the AL goes to St. Louis (A)'s Roy Sievers this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Roy was on fire, hitting .435 with 1 HR and 9 RBI. The NL Player of the Week award goes to Stan Musial, St. Louis (N)'s starting first baseman. He hit .583 with 5 RBI and slugged 1.042 in 24 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 17 games.

It's the 4th time that the AL Player of the Week award goes to Boston (A)'s leftfielder Ted Williams. Ted was on fire, hitting .542 with 2 HR and 7 RBI. It's the 1st time that the NL Player of the Week award goes to Philadelphia (N)'s catcher Stan Lopata. Stan was on fire, hitting .500 with 2 HR and 9 RBI. Tuesday 5/9/1951: Season ending injury strikes Boston (N)'s Reiser
BOSTON (N) - Boston (N)'s centerfielder Pete Reiser suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself diving for a ball. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Boston (N) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Reiser had suffered a Torn Back Muscle. His season features a batting average of .290 (31 hits in 107 AB), 7 doubles, 3 triples and 4 longballs. Reiser collected 20 RBI and 13 runs as well.
 
Monday 5/8/1951: Rosen and Ennis win Player of the Week award
The AL's best player of the week was Cleveland's Al Rosen, who wins the award for the 4th time in his career. He hit .360 with 11 RBI and slugged 1.040 in 25 at bats. Del Ennis wins his 1st Player of the Week award. NL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Ennis helped his team with an average of .545 and 9 RBI in 22 at bats.
 
Saturday 5/6/1951: Johnny Mize collects 2000th hit against Cleveland
NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s players had every reason to congratulate Johnny Mize, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! In 12 years of big league action so far, Johnny has compiled a batting average of .325, along with 354 homeruns and 1384 RBI. 'My firends always told me that I will do it one day. I never believed it. Good that I was wrong!' He hit a single in the 8th off Early Wynn for number 2000.
 
Monday 5/1/1951: Cleveland's Wynn earns Pitcher of the Month award
Cleveland's Early Wynn had a terrific April, and it earned him the AL Pitcher of the month award. His ERA of just 1.69 helped him to a 5-1 record in April. He worked 48 innings, striking out 20 hitters while walking 18. Vern Law pitched like a legend in April, and the NL named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He went 4-2 in April and finished the month with an ERA of 3.02. He struck out 9 in 44.2 innings. Vern got two complete game shutouts as well!
 
Monday 5/1/1951: Doby (CLE) and Campanella (BRO) win monthly award
Cleveland's centerfielder Larry Doby had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the AL Batter of the Month. Larry went 37 for 91 (.407), while hitting 10 HR and collecting 25 RBI. Roy Campanella of Brooklyn wins his 1st Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the NL. He hit .434 with 36 RBI and slugged .934 in 76 at bats.

Friday 4/21/1951: Boston (N)'s Gordon out for 5 weeks
BOSTON (N) - Boston (N)'s leftfielder Sid Gordon hurt himself in the 6th inning while diving for a batted ball. He got up slowly and had to leave the game. Sid Gordon will miss at least 5 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Broken Ribs which will require surgery. Gordon has hit 2 homeruns this year while batting .283. He adds one double, along with 10 runs scored.
 
Monday 4/17/1951: Cleveland's Gordon wins Player of the Week award
The AL's best player of the week was Cleveland's Joe Gordon, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. He had an on base percentage of .542 and hit .522, while driving in 7 runs. This year Gordon drove in 14 and scored 16 runs while batting .408 with 2 taters. He's 3rd in the AL in batting and 3rd in RBI! Dave Koslo of New York (N) wins his 1st Player of the Week award for dominating NL's hitters the entire week. Koslo was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.06. Along the way he struck out 5 in 17 innings. He hurled a shutout as well.
 
Saturday 4/15/1951: Dave Koslo fires 1-hitter against Chicago (N)
NEW YORK (N) - Dave Koslo had his best stuff going, and Chicago (N) hitters were chanceless. New York (N)'s left-hander fired a 1-hitter, his 1st shutout of the season. With one out in the 5th inning Willard Marshall singled to break up the no-hitter. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Koslo (3-0) struck out 1 and issued 2 BB, throwing 72 of 129 pitches for strikes. Monte Irvin provided New York (N) with the offense Koslo needed as he got 1 hit in 3 AB, homering once. New York (N) improved its record to 6-5, scoring 1 run on 6 hits.
 
Monday 4/10/1951: Stephens and Snider win Player of the Week award
Vern Stephens wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. AL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. In 24 at bats he hit .458 with 1 HR and 11 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 11 games. It's the 3rd time that the NL Player of the Week award goes to Brooklyn's centerfielder Duke Snider. Duke went 12 for 26 (.462), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 12 RBI. Duke managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week.
 
Friday 4/7/1951: New York (A)'s Joe Dimaggio laces 2000th career hit
NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s Joe Dimaggio showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against Chicago (A) on Friday. His best year so far was 1950 where he hit .359 with 36 homeruns and 125 RBI. 'This day is special, I'll probably remember it my whole life. Thank god I'm blessed with the talent to play this game.' He hit a double in the 5th off Hal Gregg for number 2000.
