Monday 10/23/1932: Brooklyn's Williams named Most Valuable Pitcher
Tim Mcnamara will never forget this year. His dominating season convinced the American League to name New York (A)'s right-hander the Most Valuable Pitcher winner of 1932. Opposing players hit .262 against Tim this season. While posting an ERA of 3.26 he went 24-11 in 39 starts, fanning 114 and walking 75 hitters. Tim has pitched 2 shutouts and 31 complete games. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! The 1932 National League Most Valuable Pitcher winner is from Brooklyn this year. John His ERA of 2.23 helped him to a 26-14 record this year. Monday 10/23/1932: Stearnes and Smith earn Most Valuable Hitter honors
Philadelphia (A)'s leftfielder Norman Stearnes had a fabulous season, no doubt about it. The American League shared this opinion and names the 31 year old the Most Valuable Hitter winner! This year Stearnes drove in 154 and scored 133 runs while batting .350 with 50 longballs. He's 3rd in the American League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI! Stearnes wins the award for the 7th time in his 9-year career. Chicago (N)'s centerfielder Charles Smith will never forget this day as well. A great season convinced the voters that he is the worthy National League Most Valuable Hitter winner. His season features a batting average of .448 (271 hits in 605 AB), 55 doubles, 16 triples and 60 homeruns. Smith collected 167 RBI and 167 runs as well. He's 1st in the National League in batting, 3rd in homeruns and 1st in RBI! Smith wins the award for the 7th time in his 7-year career.
 
Monday 10/23/1932: Detroit's Warneke earns Rookie Of The Year
Lon Warneke will never forget his first full season. The American League was convinced that Detroit's pitcher, 23 years old, should be the Rookie Of The Year winner of 1932. This season Warneke compiled an ERA of 3.76, going 14-7 in 22 starts. He fanned 80 while giving up 185 hits in 194 innings. Lon has pitched one shutout and 20 complete games. Getting an award is a nice way to start a career. Cincinnati's Arky Vaughan smiled as he was named the National League Rookie Of The Year winner. Arky has gone 161 for 499 (.323) this season, hitting 15 homeruns and driving in 84 runs. He has scored 110 runs on his own. He's 10th in the National League in batting!
 
Saturday 10/7/1932: Detroit's Stephenson out for 4-5 weeks
DETROIT - Detroit's second baseman Riggs Stephenson hurt himself in the 5th inning while making a routine throw to first base. He experienced serious pain and had to leave the game. Riggs Stephenson will miss at least 4-5 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Pulled Bicep Muscle which will require surgery. While compiling an on base percentage of .392, Riggs hit .338 and slugged .489. He has collected 73 runs batted in this year. He's 6th in the American League in batting!
 
Monday 10/2/1932: Charles Smith found the stroke, smashes three homers
BROOKLYN - Hitting homeruns is one of the most difficult things in sports. To hit three of them in one game is almost sensational. Chicago (N)'s centerfielder Charles Smith accomplished that feat in a 7-3 win over Brooklyn. A pitch from William Byrd in the 1st inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 415 feet from home plate in right-center. His 2nd blast, a solo homerun off William Byrd in the 3rd inning, landed an estimated 401 feet from home plate. A 371 foot drive to right field marked his 3rd bomb, a solo homerun off William Byrd in the 9th inning. Charles finished 4 for 4, doubling once, scoring three runs and collecting 4 RBI. In 4622 career at bats, he has hit 369 homeruns and collected 1306 RBI. It's pretty obvious that he will enter the Hall of Fame some day! Chicago (N) improved its record to 78-84, scoring 7 runs on 11 hits.
 
Monday 10/2/1932: Player of the Week honors go to Goslin and Hornsby
The American League's best player of the week was New York (A)'s Goose Goslin, who wins the award for the 10th time in his career. He hit .474 with 5 RBI and slugged 1.105 in 19 at bats. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Philadelphia (N)'s Rogers Hornsby this time, as the second baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Hornsby helped his team with an average of .619 and 11 RBI in 21 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games.
 
Sunday 10/1/1932: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced
St. Louis (A)'s pitcher Bill Walker is the American League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in September. His ERA of just 3.12 helped him to a 5-0 record in September. He worked 52 innings, striking out 19 hitters while walking 14. This season Walker compiled an ERA of 3.77, going 11-9 in 21 starts. He fanned 77 while giving up 170 hits in 176.2 innings. His season features a batting average of .350 (210 hits in 600 AB), 43 doubles, 11 triples and 50 longballs. Stearnes collected 153 RBI and 133 runs as well. He's 4th in the American League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI! It's the 5th time that the National League Batter of the Month award goes to Philadelphia (N)'s second baseman Rogers Hornsby. He had an on base percentage of .538 and hit .484, while driving in 37 runs. Hornsby has hit 50 homeruns this year while batting .348. He adds 38 doubles, along with 132 runs scored. Friday 9/29/1932: Harry Rice ropes four hits, completes cycle
CINCINNATI - Brooklyn's centerfielder Harry Rice accomplished a difficult feat in a game against Cincinnati, hitting for the cycle to improve his career batting average to .281! Number 1 in the 1st inning, a shot estimated at 354 feet, cleared the wall in right field. A single in the 2nd off Chet Brewer accounted for his 2nd hit. Hit number 3 followed in the 5th inning, a triple. A double off Vic Aldridge in the 6th inning accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Harry did drive in 3 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He now has a total of 160 hits this season, accounting for a .281 batting average. He becomes the 36th player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. On 8/31/1931, Tony Lazzeri was the last player to hit for the cycle.
 
Tuesday 9/26/1932: Cincinnati's Averill out for 7 weeks
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's centerfielder Earl Averill will miss at least 7 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. Averill was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Fractured Knee. This year Averill drove in 100 and scored 113 runs while batting .310 with 25 homeruns.

Saturday 9/23/1932: New York (A)'s Koenecke out for the season
NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s leftfielder Len Koenecke will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between New York (A) and St. Louis (A). The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Koenecke collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Koenecke was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Torn Abdominal Muscle. This year Koenecke drove in 73 and scored 57 runs while batting .316 with 12 longballs.
 
Monday 9/18/1932: Chicago (A)'s Morgan wins Player of the Week award
It's the 2nd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Chicago (A)'s first baseman Ed Morgan. In 22 at bats he hit .545 with 1 HR and 8 RBI. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Pittsburgh's Adam Comorosky this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Friday 9/15/1932: Biz Mackey ropes 2000th career hit
ST. LOUIS (N) - Brooklyn's players had every reason to congratulate Biz Mackey, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! With one out in the 2nd inning, Biz drilled a grand slam, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. In 12 years of big league action so far, Biz has compiled a batting average of .306, along with 131 homeruns and 953 RBI. 'I'm out of words. I'll probably realize it tomorrow, but for now I'm done.'
 
Thursday 9/14/1932: John Williams dominates St. Louis (N), gives up just 2 hits
ST. LOUIS (N) - Brooklyn's right-hander John Williams 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' The hitting star for Brooklyn was centerfielder Harry Rice, he stroked 4 hits in 4 AB, hitting a homerun, scoring two runs and collecting 2 RBI. Brooklyn scored 6 runs on 12 hits.

Friday 9/8/1932: Johnny Hodapp uncorks five hits against Boston (A)
DETROIT - Detroit's first baseman Johnny Hodapp once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Boston (A)'s pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Friday. In the 2nd inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Andy Cooper. It tied the ballgame at 1. His 3rd hit was a RBI double off Andy Cooper in the 4th inning. His 4th hit, a solo homerun off Andy Cooper in the 6th inning, landed an estimated 409 feet from home plate. He collected singles in the 3rd inning and in the 8th inning . Johnny scored 2 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! He now has a total of 24 hits this season, accounting for a .261 batting average. Detroit scored 10 runs on 16 hits.

The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to St. Louis (A)'s Abie Hood this time, as the second baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Abie was on fire, hitting .462 with 2 HR and 5 RBI. It's the 13th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Pittsburgh's second baseman Martin Dihigo. Martin was on fire, hitting .455 with 6 HR and 10 RBI. Martin is hitting .338 this year, with 155 hits in 458 at bats. He has driven in 142 runs, slugging .775. Saturday 9/2/1932: Tony Kaufmann out for 7 weeks
PITTSBURGH - When it rains, it pours. Pittsburgh's right-hander Tony Kaufmann will not pitch for at least 7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Chicago (N) where he left the field in the 2nd inning. Strained Tricep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This season Kaufmann compiled an ERA of 3.40, going 14-10 in 32 starts. He fanned 212 while giving up 211 hits in 267.2 innings.
 
Friday 9/1/1932: New York (A)'s James Ellis slams six hits
NEW YORK (A) - James Ellis hits 'em where they ain't. Cleveland certainly agrees as New York (A)'s first baseman unloaded six hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. A pitch from Ed Brandt in the 3rd inning left his bat for a RBI double. A RBI double off Ralph Judd in the 7th inning accounted for his 5th hit. He collected singles in the 1st (one RBI) , in the 2nd inning (one RBI) , in the 6th and in the 8th inning (one RBI). James did drive in 5 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .405. New York (A) improved its record to 84-51, scoring 16 runs on 20 hits.
 
Friday 9/1/1932: Mcnamara and Murray receive Pitcher of the Month award
The best month of August in the American League certainly had New York (A)'s right-hander Tim Mcnamara, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. He struck out 20 hitters in his 7 starts, putting together a record of 5-1 while pitching 20 innings. His ERA in August was 2.29. In 32 starts this year Tim struck out 86 batters in 275.1 innings of work. His ERA is 3.14, his record 22-7. He has 25 complete games and 2 shutouts. Boston (A)'s centerfielder Oscar Johnson had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. Johnson helped his team with an average of .408 and 30 RBI in 103 at bats. This year Johnson drove in 94 and scored 90 runs while batting .338 with 17 homeruns. He's 10th in the American League in batting, 8th in homeruns and 4th in RBI! The National League Batter of the Month award goes to Charles Smith, Chicago (N)'s starting centerfielder. Charles pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .455 with 10 and 33 RBI while slugging .891. His season features a batting average of .440 (214 hits in 486 AB), 42 doubles, 11 triples and 45 homeruns. CHICAGO (N) - Charles Smith can hit'em a long way, and Philadelphia (N) pitchers couldn't smile about that today. Chicago (N)'s centerfielder unloaded three bombs, adding to his reputation of being one of the best power hitters in the game. In the 1st inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Wayne Carr. Number 2 in the 3rd inning, a shot estimated at 394 feet, cleared the wall in left-center. His 3rd shot, off Wayne Carr in the 7th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in right field. Charles stroked 3 hits in 5 AB, with FOUR runs scored and collecting 4 RBI. On 8/11/1932, Smead Jolley was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game. The final score of the game was 14-5.
 
Monday 8/28/1932: John Williams has done it, earns 500th win
BROOKLYN - Brooklyn's players had every reason to congratulate John Williams His career features a 2.57 ERA, along with 4184 K's in 6372 innings. He has won 20 games 18 times in his career, setting a career high with 31 wins in 1925. 'This day is special, I'll probably remember it my whole life. Thank god I'm blessed with the talent to play this game.' The Hall of Fame is already waiting for this great player.
 
Monday 8/28/1932: Pittsburgh's Canavan wins Player of the Week award
Woody English wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He hit .458 with 11 RBI and slugged .708 in 24 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. Woody has gone 143 for 439 (.326) this season, hitting 6 longballs and driving in 61 runs. He has scored 72 runs on his own. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Hugh Canavan, one of Pittsburgh's best starting pitchers. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 2.00 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well.

DETROIT - When it rains, it pours. Detroit's right-hander Tommy Bridges will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Chicago (A) where he left the field in the 6th inning. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle. His ERA of 3.78 helped him to a 9-5 record this year. He struck out 72 and walked 41 in 123.2 innings.
 
Monday 8/21/1932: Washington and Ott win Player of the Week award
Jasper Washington from He had an on base percentage of .519 and hit .500, while driving in 9 runs. Mel Ott wins his 6th Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. In 21 at bats he hit .619 with 5 HR and 11 RBI.
 
Wednesday 8/16/1932: Philadelphia (N)'s Rogers Hornsby laces 3000th career hit
PHILADELPHIA (N) - Philadelphia (N)'s Rogers Hornsby showed a smile on his face after he got his 3000th career hit against Brooklyn on Wednesday. His hit in the 6th inning was a single off John His best year so far was 1927 where he hit .371 with 29 homeruns and 128 RBI. 'It's hard to believe that I did it. I want to thank my family, my friends and my teammates!' It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame!

Boston (A)'s centerfielder Oscar Johnson had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. In 25 at bats he hit .400 with 3 HR and 11 RBI. Johnson has walked 51 times this year and posts a .402 OBP. While batting .333, 143 for 429, he has driven in 82 runs. He's 5th in the American League in RBIs and 8th in homeruns! New York (N)'s third baseman Dewey Creacy had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Friday 8/11/1932: Smead Jolley homers three times against Detroit
NEW YORK (A) - Hitting a homerun is fine, but hitting three of them in one game is something special. New York (A)'s leftfielder Smead Jolley accomplished that feat in a 13-10 win over Detroit. His 1st blast, a two-run homerun off Ray Moss in the 3rd inning, landed an estimated 326 feet from home plate. Number 2 in the 4th inning, a shot estimated at 492 feet, cleared the wall in center field. His 3rd shot, a solo homerun off Charley Root in the 7th inning, cleared the fence in right-center. Smead finished with 4 hits in 5 AB, hitting a double, with FOUR runs scored and collecting 8 RBI. So far this season he is batting .275 with 13 homers and 56 RBI. Tuesday 7/25/1932: Leroy Matlock turns in great performance against Detroit
DETROIT - Detroit's bats were sleeping, and St. Louis (A)'s Leroy Matlock gave them no chance to wake up. He gave up just 2 hits in recording his 2nd shutout of the season. Matlock (11-6) struck out 3 and walked 4, throwing 62 of 107 pitches for strikes. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' Pat Mcnulty helped Matlock at the plate, he went 2 for 5. St. Louis (A) scored 5 runs on 9 hits.
 
Monday 7/24/1932: Washington's Donohue wins Player of the Week award
Pete Donohue of Washington wins his 3rd Player of the Week award for dominating American League's hitters the entire week. Pete went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.00, while fanning 6 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. Pittsburgh's second baseman Martin Dihigo had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Thursday 7/20/1932: James Bell ropes 2000th career hit
ST. LOUIS (N) - Philadelphia (N)'s James Bell showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against St. Louis (N) on Thursday. His best year so far was 1931 where he hit .356 with 20 homeruns and 74 RBI. 'It's hard to believe that I did it. I want to thank my family, my friends and my teammates!' His hit in the 6th inning was a double off Ed Holley.

The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to New York (A)'s Goose Goslin this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Goslin helped his team with an average of .346 and 14 RBI in 26 at bats. Martin Dihigo wins his 11th Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Martin was on fire, hitting .429 with 6 HR and 15 RBI. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! Saturday 7/15/1932: Pittsburgh's Russ severely injured
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's Pythias Russ suffered a serious injury Saturday in a game against St. Louis (N). Russ fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 5-6 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Inflamed Posterior Cruciate Ligament. Russ has walked 26 times this year and posts a .354 OBP. While batting .292, 83 for 284, he has driven in 34 runs.
 
Tuesday 7/11/1932: St. Louis (N)'s Herman out for 5 weeks
ST. LOUIS (N) - St. Louis (N)'s Babe Herman suffered a serious injury Tuesday in a game against Brooklyn. Herman fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 5 weeks. St. Louis (N) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Herman had suffered a Inflamed Hamstring Muscle. While compiling an on base percentage of .355, Babe hit .305 and slugged .566. He has collected 65 runs batted in this year.
 
Saturday 7/8/1932: William Byrd out for 7 weeks
BROOKLYN - Brooklyn's right-hander William Byrd suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 7 weeks. In the 8th of the game against Chicago (N) he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Strained Elbow Ligament was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His ERA of 6.17 helped him to a 4-15 record this year. He struck out 125 and walked 39 in 181 innings.

The best month of June in the American League certainly had New York (A)'s right-hander Tim Mcnamara, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. His record of 5-0 in 6 was among the leagues best this month. In 54 innings of work he allowed just 36 hits while striking out 21, compiling an ERA of just 1.17. Tim pitched a shutout as well. PHILADELPHIA (N) - Oscar Charleston got a standing ovation from 36444 fans in Philadelphia (N), who witnessed his 3000th career hit. His hit in the 9th inning was a single off Clarence Winters. BOSTON (A) - It was a great day for Detroit's right-hander Lon Warneke. The 23-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 1-hitter, against Boston (A) on Friday. Warneke (1-0) struck out 4 and walked 3, throwing 68 of 119 pitches for strikes. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Rotator Cuff Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. This season Fisher compiled an ERA of 2.71, going 5-2 in 10 starts. CLEVELAND - Cleveland's Bill Knowlton overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Philadelphia (A) had no chance, collecting just one hit against the right-hander. Monday 4/10/1932: Chicago (A)'s Wolfolk severely injured
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s ace Lewis Wolfolk suffered a severe injury on Monday and will be out for at least 7-8 weeks. In the 2nd of the game against Washington he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Broken Elbow. Surgery will be performed next week.
 
Monday 4/10/1932: Player of the Week honors go to Stearnes and Walker
The American League's best player of the week was Philadelphia (A)'s Norman Stearnes, who wins the award for the 22nd time in his career. Norman was on fire, hitting .379 with 3 HR and 11 RBI. Norman is hitting .364 this year, with 12 hits in 33 at bats. He has driven in 12 runs, slugging .758. He's 1st in the American League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns! The National League's best player of the week was New York (N)'s Dixie Walker, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Dixie was on fire, hitting .600 with 1 HR and 5 RBI.
 
Thursday 4/6/1932: Detroit's Clark out for 5 weeks
DETROIT - Detroit is without its ace Watty Clark for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Ed Morgan in a game against Chicago (A). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Clark was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Torn Tricep Muscle.
 
Wednesday 4/5/1932: William Mccall quiets Boston (N) bats with shutout
BOSTON (N) - William Mccall had his best stuff going, and Boston (N) hitters had nothing to cheer about. Philadelphia (N)'s left-hander pitched a 2-hitter, his 1st shutout of the season. Mccall (1-1) struck out 2 and walked 1, throwing 63 of 105 pitches for strikes. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Del Bissonette helped Mccall at the plate, he finished with 3 hits in 4 AB, hitting a homerun, doubling once, scoring 2 runs with 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 9-0.
 
Wednesday 4/5/1932: James Ellis collects 2000th hit against Washington
WASHINGTON - New York (A)'s James Ellis showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against Washington on Wednesday. In 11 years of big league action so far, James has compiled a batting average of .362, along with 80 homeruns and 796 RBI. 'You dream about that as a kid, but when you reach such a milestone it's hard to believe. Fantastic.' He hit a single in the 3rd off Pete Donohue for number 2000.
