He certainly earned it, he struck fear into hitters all year long. Opposing players hit .283 against Eddie this season. It's Philadelphia (A)'s leftfielder Norman Stearnes who really had a great offensive year. Norman has gone 223 for 630 (.354) this season, hitting 34 bombs and driving in 154 runs. Friday 10/20/1929: Cincinnati's Averill named Rookie Of The Year Getting an award is a nice way to start a career. Philadelphia (A)'s Ed Walsh smiled as he was named the American League Rookie Of The Year winner. This season Walsh compiled an ERA of 4.34, going 20-13 in 35 starts. He fanned 165 while giving up 319 hits in 292.1 innings. He has 25 complete games and one shutout. He's 4th in the American League in wins! Earl Averill was named the National League Rookie Of The Year winner today. Cincinnati's centerfielder put up pretty good numbers for a rookie this year. Monday 10/2/1929: Philadelphia (A)'s George Carr hits for the cycle PHILADELPHIA (A) - George Carr led Philadelphia (A) to a 16-1 win over Washington by squeezing four hits out of his bat. That's not the best part, though. He hit for the cycle as well! Number 1 in the 1st inning, a shot estimated at 376 feet, cleared the wall in left field. His 2nd hit was a double off Webster Mcdonald in the 3rd inning. A single in the 5th off Haddie Gill accounted for his 3rd hit. A two-run triple off Haddie Gill in the 6th inning, accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! George scored 2 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! Monday 10/2/1929: Boston (A)'s Gehrig wins Player of the Week award Oscar Johnson wins his 9th Player of the Week award. LOUIS (N) - St. Louis (N)'s rightfielder Chuck Klein once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. A 393 foot drive to right-center marked his 1st hit, a solo homerun off Jack In the 4th inning he belted a double off Jack Number 3 in the 6th inning accounted for a RBI double. Sunday 10/1/1929: Lefty Grove dominates New York (N), throws NO-HITTER ST. LOUIS (N) - St. Louis (N)'s lefty Lefty Grove is a really great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking New York (N) on no hits. Jigger Statz spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with no outs in the 8th inning. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches. I'm so happy that it was enough to pitch such a great game.' Grove (14-18) struck out 6 and issued 1 BB, throwing 66 of 109 pitches for strikes. Chuck Klein helped Grove at the plate, he finished with 5 hits in 5 AB, hitting a homerun, doubling FOUR times, scoring FOUR times and driving in 4 runs. Sunday 7/30/1929: New York (A)'s Ewing out for the season NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s catcher William Ewing will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between New York (A) and Cleveland. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Ewing collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. After being taken to a local hospital, Ewing was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Ruptured Achilles Tendon. His season features a batting average of .361 (123 hits in 341 AB), 22 doubles, 4 triples and 3 bombs. Monday 5/1/1929: Tommy Thomas pitches 2-hit shutout against Chicago (N) CHICAGO (N) - It was a great day for St. Louis (N)'s right-hander Tommy Thomas. The 29-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Chicago (N) on Monday. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Thomas (3-2) struck out 3 and issued 1 BB, throwing 64 of 96 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for St. Louis (N) was rightfielder Chuck Klein, he went 3 for 4, hitting two dingers, hitting a double, scoring three runs and driving in 3 runs. St. Louis (N) scored 7 runs on 14 hits. |
Monday 5/1/1929: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced It's the 1st time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to His record of 5-1 in 6 was among the leagues best this month. In 50 innings of work he allowed just 48 hits while striking out 32, compiling an ERA of just 2.70. Brooklyn's Pat Murray had a terrific April, and it earned him the National League Pitcher of the month award. He had an ERA of just 1.61 in 61.2 innings of work in which he struck out 28 hitters. His record in April is 7-0. Pat fired two shutouts! |
Monday 5/1/1929: Sisler (WAS) and Ott (CIN) win monthly award It's the 2nd time that the American League Batter of the Month award goes to Washington's first baseman George Sisler. George pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .465 with 2 and 20 RBI while slugging .667. Cincinnati's leftfielder Mel Ott had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. Mel was on fire, hitting .379 with 10 homeruns and 26 RBI. |
Monday 5/1/1929: Player of the Week honors go to Munson and Scales Washington's rightfielder Joe Munson had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He had an on base percentage of .571 and hit .625, while driving in 11 runs. Joe managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! It's the 3rd time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Philadelphia (N)'s third baseman George Scales. George pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .476 with 1 HR and 12 RBI while slugging .952. |
Monday 4/24/1929: Tony Kaufmann quiets Cincinnati bats with shutout CINCINNATI - Pittsburgh's right-hander Tony Kaufmann is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Cincinnati on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 3rd time he has done it in his career. With one out in the 7th inning Joe Sewell singled to break up the no-hitter. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Kaufmann (4-0) struck out 8 and walked none, throwing 68 of 102 pitches for strikes. Ike Boone helped Kaufmann at the plate, he went 1 for 3, stroking a double, with 2 RBI. Pittsburgh scored 4 runs on 11 hits. |
Monday 4/24/1929: Collins and Gehrig win Player of the Week award Pat Collins wins his 4th Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. In 22 at bats he hit .636 with 3 HR and 10 RBI. Collins has hit for a .475 average this season. He has 10 extra base hits along with 49 total bases, resulting in a .831 slugging percentage. He's 1st in the American League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 5th in RBI! The American League Player of the Week award goes to Lou Gehrig, Philadelphia (A)'s starting first baseman. He had an on base percentage of .483 and hit .400, while driving in 9 runs. His season features a batting average of .397 (25 hits in 63 AB), 7 doubles, 2 triples and 6 longballs. Gehrig collected 19 RBI and 18 runs as well. He's 7th in the American League in batting, 4th in homeruns and 2nd in RBI! |
Saturday 4/22/1929: Mel Ott homers three times against Brooklyn CINCINNATI - Mel Ott was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Cincinnati to a 8-7 win over Brooklyn by homering three times. His 1st shot, a solo homerun off Guy Bush in the 1st inning, cleared the fence in right field. That one tied it at 1 runs apiece. In the 3rd inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Guy Bush. Number 3 in the 5th inning, a shot estimated at 357 feet, cleared the wall in right field. Overall he collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate, scoring three runs and collecting 3 RBI. So far this season he is batting .354 with 9 homers and 19 RBI. John Beckwith was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 9/30/1928. |
Monday 4/17/1929: Chicago (N)'s Babe Ruth crushes homerun #600 CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s players had every reason to congratulate Babe Ruth, who reached a milestone today, slamming his 600th career longball! In the 4th inning he unloaded his 600th blast off Ken Holloway. Along with his 600 homeruns, Babe collected 2243 hits and 1881 RBI in 15 seasons. Babe hit 30+ homeruns in a season 14 times, hitting 40 bombs 7 times. 'I'm out of words. I'll probably realize it tomorrow, but for now I'm done.' The Hall of Fame already has reserved a place for this great player. |
Monday 4/17/1929: Philadelphia (A)'s Stearnes wins Player of the Week award Norman Stearnes wins his 16th Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Norman was on fire, hitting .474 with 3 HR and 17 RBI. Pete Scott from St. Louis (N) wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. He had an on base percentage of .545 and hit .571, while driving in 7 runs. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 15 games. |
Monday 4/10/1929: Philadelphia (A)'s Stearnes wins Player of the Week award The American League Player of the Week award goes to Norman Stearnes, Philadelphia (A)'s starting leftfielder. Norman pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .542 with 1 HR and 13 RBI while slugging .875. Norman managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. The National League's best player of the week was St. Louis (N)'s Pete Scott, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Pete was on fire, hitting .550 with 3 HR and 6 RBI. |
Sunday 4/9/1929: John Williams blanks New York (N) with a 2-hitter NEW YORK (N) - John 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Williams Clyde Barnhart provided Brooklyn with the offense Williams Brooklyn scored 14 runs on 14 hits. |
