Tuesday 9/19/1926: It's NO-NO time for Colonel Snover against Boston (N) NEW YORK (N) - Great things can happen when you throw strikes. Then, when you're not trying to force a hit, you slug them in droves,' says Jimmie Foxx after his 5 hit game, which New York (A) won 12-0 against Chicago (A). Tuesday 9/5/1926: Huge blow for St. Louis (N)'s Vedder, career over ST. LOUIS (N) - It was one of baseball saddest days. St. Louis (N)'s right-hander Lou Vedder fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against Philadelphia (N) on Tuesday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to Ross Youngs, then suddenly collapsed. After being taken to a local hospital, Vedder was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Torn Back Muscle. This season Vedder compiled an ERA of 3.17, going 12-13 in 28 starts. He fanned 95 while giving up 203 hits in 221.1 innings. Monday 4/17/1926: Graham and Gehrig win Player of the Week award Washington's pitcher Skinny Graham had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.00 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. Lou Gehrig from Washington wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. In 28 at bats he hit .464 with 3 HR and 7 RBI. His season features a batting average of .390 (23 hits in 59 AB), 6 doubles, 3 triples and 7 longballs. Gehrig collected 18 RBI and 21 runs as well. He's 3rd in the American League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI! |
Sunday 4/16/1926: Claral Gillenwater turns in great performance against St. Louis (A) ST. LOUIS (A) - Claral Gillenwater had his best stuff going, and St. Louis (A) hitters had nothing to cheer about. Boston (A)'s right-hander pitched a 1-hitter, his 1st shutout of the season. Gillenwater (1-2) fanned 4 and walked 2, throwing 103 pitches. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Boston (A)'s centerfielder Oscar Johnson stroked 4 hits in 5 AB, hitting 2 doubles. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Gillenwater. The final score of the game was 5-0. |
Thursday 4/13/1926: Dana Fillingim quiets Boston (A) bats with shutout BOSTON (A) - Dana Fillingim had his best stuff going, and Boston (A) hitters had nothing to cheer about. Detroit's right-hander pitched a 2-hitter, his 1st shutout of the season. Fillingim (2-1) fanned 6 and walked 1, throwing 115 pitches. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Sandy Thompson provided Detroit with the offense Fillingim needed as he finished with 3 hits in 4 AB. Detroit scored 6 runs on 9 hits. |
Tuesday 4/11/1926: Jud Wilson clubs five hits in a game PITTSBURGH - Jud Wilson led Chicago (N) to a 13-4 win over Pittsburgh by squeezing five hits out of his bat. Number 1 in the 2nd inning, a shot estimated at 374 feet, cleared the wall in right field. That one tied it at 1 runs apiece. A pitch from Jesse Haines in the 3rd inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 406 feet from home plate in right-center. He collected singles in the 4th , in the 5th inning and in the 8th inning . Jud did drive in 3 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .410. |
Monday 4/10/1926: Boston (A)'s Johnson wins Player of the Week award The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Boston (A)'s Oscar Johnson this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He had an on base percentage of .467 and hit .429, while driving in 10 runs. The National League's best player of the week was Philadelphia (N)'s Rogers Hornsby, who wins the award for the 9th time in his career. Rogers pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .310 with 5 HR and 10 RBI while slugging .828. |
Thursday 4/6/1926: Sam Jones blanks Chicago (A) with a 2-hitter ST. LOUIS (A) - Chicago (A)'s offense is good, but St. Louis (A)'s Sam Jones was even better. The right-hander fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. Jones (1-0) struck out 2 and walked 2, throwing 75 of 119 pitches for strikes. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' The hitting star for St. Louis (A) was leftfielder Heinie Manush, he got 2 hits in 4 AB. St. Louis (A) improved its record to 1-4, scoring 1 run on 7 hits. |
