He has collected 117 runs batted in this year. He's 5th in the American League in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 4th in RBI! Stearnes wins the award for the 2nd time in his 2-year career. Friday 9/29/1925: Norman Stearnes hits for the cycle against New York (A) PHILADELPHIA (A) - Philadelphia (A)'s leftfielder Norman Stearnes once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up New York (A)'s pitching staff with a 4 hit performance on Friday. A RBI double off Anthony Mahoney in the 1st inning accounted for his 1st hit. Number 2 in the 3rd inning, a shot estimated at 377 feet, cleared the wall in right field. A pitch from Anthony Mahoney in the 5th inning left his bat for a RBI triple. Saturday 9/23/1925: Lou Vedder shuts out Boston (N) on 2 hits ST. LOUIS (N) - St. Louis (N)'s right-hander Lou Vedder is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Friday 8/25/1925: Huge blow for Chicago (A)'s Frisch, career over CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s Frankie Frisch suffered a serious injury Friday in a game against St. Louis (A). Frisch fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably entire career. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Ruptured Medial Collateral Ligament which will require surgery. Frisch has hit for a .304 average this season. Monday 5/1/1925: Player of the Week honors go to Hill and Smith It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Hill was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 2.50. Along the way he struck out 10 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. Earl Smith wins his 1st Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He had an on base percentage of .524 and hit .524, while driving in 2 runs. He has hit 5 longballs while batting .471 this season. His 48 hits and 3 walks add up to a .486 on-base percentage. He's 1st in the National League in batting! |
Thursday 4/27/1925: Hugh Canavan fires 1-hitter against St. Louis (N) ST. LOUIS (N) - Great days are rare. But not for Brooklyn's lefty Hugh Canavan. St. Louis (N) found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 11th time he has done it in his career. Canavan (6-1) struck out 3 and issued 3 BB, throwing 65 of 110 pitches for strikes. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Brooklyn's leftfielder Al Wingo went 3 for 4, hitting a double, scoring two runs and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Canavan. Brooklyn scored 8 runs on 15 hits. |
Tuesday 4/25/1925: Brooklyn's Wheat severely injured BROOKLYN - Brooklyn's leftfielder Zack Wheat will miss about 6-7 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 1st inning of the game between Brooklyn and Chicago (N). He dove for a drive off the bat of George Shively, and immediately signaled that he's not OK after hitting the ground. Brooklyn wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Wheat had suffered a Broken Finger. Zack has gone 17 for 55 (.309) this season, hitting no longballs and driving in 5 runs. He has scored 8 runs on his own. |
Monday 4/24/1925: New York (N)'s Charleston wins Player of the Week award The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Chicago (A)'s Lewis Wolfolk this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Lewis went 2-0 with an ERA of 3.00, while fanning 1 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. Lewis has a record of 5-1 this season, with an ERA of 3.06. In 53 Innings he was able to strike out 19 batters. Lewis has pitched one shutout and 5 complete games. He's 7th in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! The National League Player of the Week award goes to Oscar Charleston, New York (N)'s starting centerfielder. He hit .520 with 7 RBI and slugged 1.080 in 25 at bats. Charleston has walked 3 times this year and posts a .446 OBP. While batting .432, 38 for 88, he has driven in 19 runs. He's 2nd in the National League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 2nd in RBI! |
Monday 4/17/1925: Frank Wickware has done it, earns 300th win CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s right-hander Frank Wickware already had some highlights in his career, and today he added a historic one as he picked up his 300th career win. Wickware went 8.2 innings. He allowed 3 earned runs , giving up 5 hits while striking out 10 and walking 3 earned runs. He has enmassed 2423 K's in 3431 career innings so far, and posts a 3.35 lifetime ERA. He set a career high with 27 wins in 1910. Wickware won 20 or more games a season 10 times. 'Good things happen when you throw strikes. I'm happy I could do it for most of my career.' It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame! The number he has put up are well worth it. |
Monday 4/17/1925: Stearnes (PHA) and Jamieson (PHI) win P.O.W. award Norman Stearnes from Philadelphia (A) wins his 4th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. In 30 at bats he hit .433 with 3 HR and 12 RBI. It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Philadelphia (N)'s leftfielder Charlie Jamieson. Charlie went 15 for 23 (.652), while hitting 0 HR and collecting 8 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 8 games. |
Sunday 4/16/1925: Season ending injury strikes St. Louis (A)'s Cochrane ST. LOUIS (A) - St. Louis (A)'s catcher Mickey Cochrane suffered a season ending injury he was bowled over in a collision at home plate. Cochrane laid unconscious on the field for several minutes and had to be carried off the field. He will miss the entire season. Cochrane was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Broken Wrist. He has hit no bombs while batting .308 this season. His 12 hits and 11 walks add up to a .460 on-base percentage. |
Wednesday 4/12/1925: Brooklyn's Jeffries severely injured BROOKLYN - Brooklyn is without its left-hander Jim Jeffries for at least 8 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Joe Sewell in a game against Cincinnati. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Bone Chips Shoulder was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. |
Monday 4/10/1925: Eddie Rommel blanks Boston (A) with a 2-hitter CHICAGO (A) - Boston (A)'s hitters were dominated by Chicago (A)'s Eddie Rommel. He gave up just 2 hits in recording his 1st shutout of the season. Rommel (1-2) struck out 3 and issued 1 BB, throwing 61 of 96 pitches for strikes. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' The hitting star for Chicago (A) was centerfielder Al Simmons, he finished 2 for 4, doubling once, with 2 RBI. Chicago (A) improved its record to 4-5, scoring 3 runs on 6 hits. |
Monday 4/10/1925: Richbourg and Williams win Player of the Week award The American League Player of the Week award goes to Lance Richbourg, St. Louis (A)'s starting second baseman. Richbourg helped his team with an average of .556 and 7 RBI in 27 at bats. Richbourg has hit one tater this year while batting .459. He adds 3 doubles, along with 8 runs scored. He's 4th in the American League in batting! Brooklyn's pitcher John Williams He hurled a shutout as well. |
Friday 4/7/1925: Bill Doak pitches his 1st shutout of the season CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s hitters looked uncomfortable, and St. Louis (N)'s Bill Doak didn't help them. The right-hander fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Doak (1-1) struck out 3 and issued 1 BB, throwing 57 of 96 pitches for strikes. Braggo Roth helped Doak at the plate, he collected 3 hits in 5 trips to the plate, blasting a homerun, scoring 2 runs with 2 RBI. St. Louis (N) improved its record to 2-4, scoring 10 runs on 15 hits. |
