Wednesday 10/25/1922: Hearn (CLE) and Williams (BRO) win Most Valuable Pitcher
Cleveland's left-hander Bunny Hearn was untouchable all year long. His work paid off today as the American League named him the Most Valuable Pitcher winner! Opposing players hit .271 against Bunny this season. While posting an ERA of 3.21 he went 24-11 in 40 starts, fanning 105 and walking 53 hitters. He has 30 complete games and one shutout. He's 6th in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! Wednesday 10/25/1922: Wheat (WAS) and Ruth (CHC) win Most Valuable Hitter
A season for the ages earned Washington's leftfielder Zack Wheat the American League Most Valuable Hitter this year. Zack has gone 201 for 562 (.358) this season, hitting 7 bombs and driving in 92 runs. He has scored 97 runs on his own. He's 3rd in the American League in batting and 6th in RBI! The Most Valuable Hitter in the National League was handed to Chicago (N)'s leftfielder Babe Ruth! This year Ruth drove in 157 and scored 114 runs while batting .329 with 45 bombs. He's 7th in the National League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI! Ruth wins the award for the 2nd time in his 8-year career.
 
Wednesday 10/25/1922: Johnson (BOS) and Hauser (NYN) win Rookie Of The Year
Oscar Johnson will never forget his first full season. The American League was convinced that Boston (A)'s centerfielder, 26 years old, should be the Rookie Of The Year winner of 1922. Oscar has gone 176 for 544 (.324) this season, hitting 18 bombs and driving in 90 runs. He has scored 108 runs on his own. He's 8th in the American League in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 7th in RBI! Getting an award is a nice way to start a career. New York (N)'s Joe Hauser smiled as he was named the National League Rookie Of The Year winner. Monday 10/2/1922: Smith and Beckwith win Player of the Week award
Philadelphia (A)'s first baseman Clarence Smith The National League Player of the Week award goes to John Beckwith, Pittsburgh's starting third baseman. In 26 at bats he hit .385 with 3 HR and 8 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Beckwith has hit for a .337 average this season. NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s season has taken a hit after one of their best players, first baseman Joe Hauser, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 4-5 weeks. New York (N) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Hauser had suffered a Fractured Knee. His season features a batting average of .281 (142 hits in 506 AB), 21 doubles, 3 triples and 20 longballs. Hauser collected 110 RBI and 88 runs as well. The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to St. Louis (A)'s Ben Tincup this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.00 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Julio Rojo, Brooklyn's starting first baseman. Julio went 17 for 29 (.586), while hitting 1 HR and collecting 6 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. This year Rojo drove in 83 and scored 90 runs while batting .315 with 7 bombs.
 
Sunday 9/10/1922: Charles Blackwell (WAS) will miss 6 weeks
WASHINGTON - Being hit with a pitch is no fun at all. Especially when you get injured. Washington's centerfielder Charles Blackwell will miss about 6 weeks after being hit by Tom Grubbs in the 2nd inning of the game between Washington and Boston (A). Broken Finger was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This year Blackwell drove in 69 and scored 99 runs while batting .332 with 10 taters. He's 6th in the American League in batting!
 
Thursday 9/7/1922: 6-hit performance by Chicago (N)'s Dobie Moore
CINCINNATI - On Thursday, Chicago (N)'s third baseman Dobie Moore displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against Cincinnati, punishing their pitchers with six hits. A two-run double off Elmer Myers in the 12th inning accounted for his 6th hit. He collected singles in the 1st inning , in the 4th inning , in the 5th inning (one RBI) , in the 8th and in the 10th . Dobie did drive in 3 while scoring one run on his own. His 6 hit performance increases his batting average to .333. Chicago (N) scored 8 runs on 16 hits.

Lew Fonseca from Washington wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Boston (A)'s Tom Grubbs had a terrific August, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. He went 5-2 in August and finished the month with an ERA of 2.21. He struck out 21 in 61 innings. Tom fired two shutouts! Opposing players hit .272 against Tom this season. While posting an ERA of 3.48 he went 13-13 in 26 starts, fanning 91 and walking 70 hitters. He has 21 complete games and 2 shutouts. It's the 3rd time that the National League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Cincinnati's pitcher John Donaldson. He had an ERA of just 2.19 in 49.1 innings of work in which he struck out 23 hitters. His record in August is 5-0. John pitched a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .243 against John this season. While posting an ERA of 3.01 he went 20-11 in 36 starts, fanning 160 and walking 51 hitters. John has pitched 3 shutouts and 26 complete games. The Batter of the Month award in the American League goes to New York (A)'s Jasper Washington this time, as the third baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. It's the 8th time that the National League Batter of the Month award goes to Chicago (N)'s leftfielder Babe Ruth. He had an on base percentage of .457 and hit .330, while driving in 22 runs. BOSTON (A) - George Uhle had his best stuff going, and Boston (A) hitters had nothing to cheer about. Detroit's right-hander pitched a 1-hitter, his 2nd shutout of the season. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Uhle (16-12) struck out 6 and walked none, throwing 61 of 86 pitches for strikes. Roger Peckinpaugh provided Detroit with the offense Uhle needed as he got 2 hits in 4 AB, with 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 5-0.
 
Monday 8/28/1922: Stephenson and Fournier win Player of the Week award
It's the 2nd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Detroit's second baseman Riggs Stephenson. Thursday 8/24/1922: Chicago (A)'s Stuffy Mcinnis laces 2000th career hit
ST. LOUIS (A) - Chicago (A)'s first baseman Stuffy Mcinnis joined some elite company today, collecting his 2000th career hit! Along with his 2000 hits, Stuffy collected 22 homeruns and 778 RBI in 13 seasons. 'Baseball is a great game, and adding something to it's history is smething I've always wanted. What a great day!' His hit in the 3rd inning was a single off Harry Weaver.
 
Wednesday 8/23/1922: Guy Morton turns in great performance against Washington
WASHINGTON - All you need to win is a dominating pitching performance. And Philadelphia (A)'s Guy Morton did so today, in a 2-hit shutout against Washington. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Morton (3-8) struck out 4 and walked 3, throwing 60 of 110 pitches for strikes. Chick Gandil helped Morton at the plate, he got 2 hits in 5 AB, homering once. The final score of the game was 4-0.
 
Tuesday 8/22/1922: Pittsburgh's Alexander severely injured
PITTSBURGH - When it rains, it pours. Pittsburgh's ace Pete Alexander will not pitch for at least 5-6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Cincinnati where he left the field in the 4th inning. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Bone Chips Shoulder. This season Alexander compiled an ERA of 2.72, going 14-9 in 28 starts. He fanned 174 while giving up 208 hits in 234.2 innings. Pete has pitched 2 shutouts and 21 complete games.

CLEVELAND - When it rains, it pours. Cleveland's ace Walter Johnson will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Washington where he left the field in the 7th inning. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Torn Bicep Muscle which will require surgery. This season Johnson compiled an ERA of 3.58, going 11-8 in 24 starts. He fanned 187 while giving up 167 hits in 191 innings.
 
Tuesday 8/15/1922: Boston (A)'s Johnson out for 4-5 weeks
BOSTON (A) - Boston (A)'s centerfielder Oscar Johnson will miss at least 4-5 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Pulled Calf Muscle. His season numbers are: .318 AVG, 135 hits, 26 doubles, 7 triples and 12 bombs, along with 72 RBI and 82 runs scored. He's 5th in the American League in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns!
 
Tuesday 8/15/1922: George Uhle turns in great performance against New York (A)
DETROIT - New York (A)'s hitters were dominated by Detroit's George Uhle. He gave up just 2 hits in recording his 1st shutout of the season. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Uhle (14-11) struck out 6 and walked 1, throwing 65 of 104 pitches for strikes. Detroit's centerfielder George Burns stroked 1 hit in 3 AB. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Uhle. Detroit scored 2 runs on 4 hits.

CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s right-hander Frank Wickware suffered a severe injury on Friday and will be out for at least 8-9 weeks. In the 4th of the game against Boston (N) he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Wickware was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Torn Bicep Muscle. This season Wickware compiled an ERA of 3.51, going 14-11 in 29 starts. He fanned 135 while giving up 222 hits in 223.1 innings. Frank has pitched 2 shutouts and 15 complete games.

Sunday 8/6/1922: Dick Rudolph (NYN) will miss 5-6 weeks
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N) is without its right-hander Dick Rudolph for at least 5-6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Frank Baker in a game against Pittsburgh. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Pulled Bicep Muscle which will require surgery. Dick has a record of 16-2 this season, with an ERA of 2.45. In 187.2 Innings he was able to strike out 79 batters. Dick has pitched one shutout and 15 complete games. He's 2nd in the National League in ERA and 8th in wins!
 
Friday 8/4/1922: Detroit's Hank Severeid mashes five hits
BOSTON (A) - 'Wow, five hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said Detroit's catcher Hank Severeid after the 8-3 win over Boston (A). A pitch from Ed Gerner in the 1st inning left his bat for a two-run triple. In the 7th inning he belted a double off Ed Gerner. Hit number 5 followed in the 9th inning, a triple. He collected singles in the 3rd and in the 5th (one RBI). Hank scored 2 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .322.

PITTSBURGH - When it rains, it pours. Pittsburgh's lefty Wilbur Cooper will not pitch for at least 7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Chicago (N) where he left the field in the 2nd inning. Strained Bicep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This season Cooper compiled an ERA of 3.07, going 5-5 in 18 starts. He fanned 48 while giving up 155 hits in 135 innings.
 
Tuesday 8/1/1922: New York (A)'s Russell earns Pitcher of the Month award
John Russell couldn't have pitched much better than he did in July, and the American League thought so as well, naming the lefty Pitcher of the Month. He struck out 20 hitters in his 7 starts, putting together a record of 4-0 while pitching 20 innings. His ERA in July was 1.62. This season Russell compiled an ERA of 1.61, going 4-0 in 7 starts. He fanned 20 while giving up 48 hits in 61.1 innings. Winner of this months National League Pitcher of the Month award is Cincinnati's Ray Keating. CLEVELAND - Bob Meusel is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. Chicago (A)'s rightfielder Kiki Cuyler had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. He had an on base percentage of .467 and hit .402, while driving in 18 runs. His season features a batting average of .318 (87 hits in 274 AB), 15 doubles, 6 triples and 3 taters. Cuyler collected 36 RBI and 42 runs as well. The National League's best player of the month was Pittsburgh's John Beckwith, who wins the award for the 5th time in his career. Beckwith helped his team with an average of .337 and 27 RBI in 95 at bats. His season features a batting average of .316 (90 hits in 285 AB), 11 doubles, 3 triples and 19 homeruns. Tuesday 6/27/1922: Cleveland's Heimach out for the season
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's left-hander Fred Heimach experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 7th inning of the game against Washington, Heimach complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. After being taken to a local hospital, Heimach was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Bone Chips Shoulder. Fred has a record of 1-1 this season, with an ERA of 4.44. In 24.1 Innings he was able to strike out 7 batters.
 
Monday 6/26/1922: Detroit's Tyler wins Player of the Week award
It's the 3rd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Detroit's pitcher Lefty Tyler. Lefty went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.13, while fanning 3 in 16 innings of work. A complete game added to his brilliant performance. Opposing players hit .242 against Lefty this season. While posting an ERA of 2.94 he went 12-3 in 17 starts, fanning 39 and walking 30 hitters. He has 14 complete games and one shutout. He's 3rd in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! Cristobal Torriente wins his 5th Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Torriente helped his team with an average of .536 and 8 RBI in 28 at bats. This year Torriente drove in 44 and scored 63 runs while batting .337 with 4 bombs. He's 7th in the National League in batting!
 
Monday 6/19/1922: New York (A)'s Watson out for 8-9 weeks
NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s right-hander Mule Watson suffered a severe injury on Monday and will be out for at least 8-9 weeks. In the 5th of the game against Cleveland he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Strained Elbow Ligament was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This season Watson compiled an ERA of 2.63, going 10-6 in 20 starts. He fanned 47 while giving up 155 hits in 161 innings. He has 14 complete games and 3 shutouts. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins!
 
Monday 6/19/1922: Chicago (A)'s Cuyler wins Player of the Week award
Kiki Cuyler wins his 3rd Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He hit .458 with 8 RBI and slugged .958 in 24 at bats. Pittsburgh's third baseman John Beckwith had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. He had an on base percentage of .423 and hit .417, while driving in 15 runs. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well!
 
Saturday 6/17/1922: Pol Perritt pitches 2-hit shutout against Boston (N)
BROOKLYN - Good things can happen when you throw strikes. And Pol Perritt did so today, in a 2-hit shutout against Boston (N). Perritt (3-1) fanned 5 and walked 3, throwing 114 pitches. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Biz Mackey helped Perritt at the plate, he stroked 4 hits in 5 AB, doubling once, scoring twice with 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 8-0.

The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to New York (A)'s Jack Smith this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .591 with 4 RBI and slugged .864 in 22 at bats. His season numbers are: .324 AVG, 70 hits, 9 doubles, one triple and 2 longballs, along with 28 RBI and 36 runs scored. It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Brooklyn's pitcher Phil Douglas. Phil went 2-0 with an ERA of 2.00, while fanning 9 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well.
 
Friday 6/2/1922: Cleveland's Martin severely injured
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's right-hander Speed Martin suffered a severe injury on Friday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 3rd of the game against Washington he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle. This season Martin compiled an ERA of 3.13, going 6-5 in 13 starts. He fanned 28 while giving up 115 hits in 106.1 innings. Speed has pitched one shutout and 9 complete games.
 
Thursday 6/1/1922: Brooklyn's Leonard named Pitcher of the Month
It's the 1st time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to New York (A)'s pitcher Mule Watson. He started 8 games in May, going 5-2 and compiling an ERA of 2.55 in 67 innings. Mule fanned 16 hitters. Mule pitched a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .237 against Mule this season. While posting an ERA of 2.04 he went 9-3 in 15 starts, fanning 39 and walking 34 hitters. Charlie has gone 71 for 201 (.353) this season, hitting 3 longballs and driving in 40 runs. He has scored 30 runs on his own. He's 8th in the American League in batting and 2nd in RBI! The National League's best player of the week was Pittsburgh's John Beckwith, who wins the award for the 9th time in his career. John pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .484 with 4 HR and 6 RBI while slugging .968. John is hitting .314 this year, with 58 hits in 185 at bats. He has driven in 31 runs, slugging .562.
 
Saturday 5/27/1922: Roy Sanders (PIT) will miss 7 weeks
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's right-hander Roy Sanders suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 7 weeks. In the 8th of the game against Chicago (N) he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Bone Chips Shoulder. Surgery will be performed next week. Roy has a record of 5-4 this season, with an ERA of 4.16. In 80 Innings he was able to strike out 28 batters.
 
Wednesday 5/24/1922: Walter Johnson has done it, earns 300th win
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's right-hander Walter Johnson gained immortality by recording his 300th win in the big leagues. Johnson allowed 4 earned runs while striking out 8 and walking 0 in 9 innings of work. He has enmassed 2818 K's in 4264 career innings so far, and posts a 2.24 lifetime ERA. He has won 20 games 14 times in his career, setting a career high with 27 wins in 1919. 'This day is special, I'll probably remember it my whole life. Thank god I'm blessed with the talent to play this game.' The Hall of Fame is already waiting for this great player.

Wednesday 5/17/1922: Ferdie Schupp out for 5-6 weeks
BOSTON (A) - Boston (A)'s pitcher Ferdie Schupp was part of a scary incident that saw the left-hander being hit by a line drive in the 8th inning of the game between Boston (A) and Washington. Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Schupp will miss about 5-6 weeks. Schupp was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Broken Finger. Ferdie has a record of 4-6 this season, with an ERA of 3.60. In 100 Innings he was able to strike out 37 batters. Ferdie has pitched one shutout and 8 complete games.
 
Monday 5/15/1922: Player of the Week honors go to Grimm and Kilduff

It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Boston (A)'s centerfielder Oscar Johnson. Oscar went 11 for 21 (.524), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 7 RBI. New York (N)'s first baseman Joe Hauser had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. He hit .438 with 10 RBI and slugged 1.125 in 16 at bats. While compiling an on base percentage of .373, Joe hit .260 and slugged .540. He has collected 14 runs batted in this year.
 
Wednesday 5/3/1922: Pittsburgh's Cooper out for 5 weeks
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's pitcher Wilbur Cooper was part of a scary incident that saw the left-hander being hit by a line drive in the 7th inning of the game between Pittsburgh and Brooklyn. Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Cooper will miss about 5 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Cooper was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Fractured Hand. In 6 starts this year Wilbur struck out 15 batters in 46.1 innings of work. His ERA is 2.53, his record 0-2.
 
Monday 5/1/1922: Joe Jackson collects 2000th hit against Cleveland
CLEVELAND - St. Louis (A)'s leftfielder Joe Jackson already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. Along with his 2000 hits, Joe collected 62 homeruns and 892 RBI in 14 seasons. 'Baseball is a great game, and adding something to it's history is smething I've always wanted. What a great day!' His hit in the 7th inning was a single off Speed Martin.
 
Monday 5/1/1922: Eller and Doak receive Pitcher of the Month award
New York (A)'s pitcher Hod Eller is the American League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in April. He had an ERA of just 2.92 in 71 innings of work in which he struck out 15 hitters. His record in April is 7-1. Hod fired two shutouts! It's the 1st time that the National League Pitcher of the Month award goes to St. Louis (N)'s pitcher Bill Doak. He started 7 games in April, going 6-0 and compiling an ERA of 2.03 in 62 innings. Bill fanned 40 hitters. Bill fired THREE shutouts!

The American League Batter of the Month award goes to George Sisler, Washington's starting first baseman. George pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .486 with 0 and 17 RBI while slugging .600. Philadelphia (N)'s shortstop Rogers Hornsby had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. Monday 5/1/1922: St. Louis (N)'s Doak wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Lefty Tyler, one of Detroit's best starting pitchers. Tyler was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.00. Along the way he struck out 4 in 18 innings. He was able to complete both starts of the week. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to St. Louis (N)'s Bill Doak this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.50 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. This season Doak compiled an ERA of 2.03, going 6-0 in 7 starts. He fanned 40 while giving up 53 hits in 62 innings. Bill has pitched 3 shutouts and 6 complete games. He's 2nd in the National League in ERA and 1st in wins!
 
Sunday 4/30/1922: Urban Shocker shuts out Philadelphia (N) on 2 hits
PHILADELPHIA (N) - Philadelphia (N)'s hitters looked uncomfortable, and Boston (N)'s Urban Shocker didn't help them. The right-hander fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. Shocker (2-5) fanned 5 and walked none, throwing 109 pitches. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' The hitting star for Boston (N) was third baseman Ossie Vitt, he finished 3 for 5, scoring three runs. Boston (N) improved its record to 7-19, scoring 7 runs on 12 hits.
 
Friday 4/28/1922: Jakie May shuts out Boston (A) on 2 hits
BOSTON (A) - Boston (A)'s offense is struggling, and Philadelphia (A)'s Jakie May didn't help them. The left-hander fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. May (3-3) struck out 3 and walked 4, throwing 61 of 107 pitches for strikes. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Ken Williams provided Philadelphia (A) with the offense May needed as he collected 3 hits in 5 trips to the plate, stroking two 2B's, with 4 RBI. Philadelphia (A) improved its record to 7-18, scoring 5 runs on 14 hits.
 
Monday 4/24/1922: Mchenry and Anderson win Player of the Week award
It's the 3rd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Cleveland's leftfielder Austin Mchenry. He had an on base percentage of .593 and hit .560, while driving in 10 runs. Mchenry has hit 3 bombs this year while batting .360. He adds 8 doubles, along with 12 runs scored. He's 1st in the American League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns! Saturday 4/22/1922: Dutch Leonard turns in great performance against Cincinnati
CINCINNATI - Brooklyn's left-hander Dutch Leonard is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Cincinnati found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Leonard 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 29th shutouts in his career. Frank Snyder spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he singled with two outs in the 5th inning. Leonard (4-2) struck out 5 and walked 2, throwing 71 of 121 pitches for strikes. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Brooklyn's third baseman Heinie Groh collected 1 hit in 4 trips to the plate, doubling once, and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Leonard. Brooklyn scored 6 runs on 10 hits.
 
Monday 4/17/1922: Hoyt and Hornsby win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Waite Hoyt, one of Detroit's best starting pitchers. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.50 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. Rogers Hornsby wins his 5th Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Rogers pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .462 with 6 HR and 11 RBI while slugging 1.231.
 
Tuesday 4/11/1922: Season ending injury strikes Philadelphia (N)'s Scales
PHILADELPHIA (N) - Philadelphia (N)'s third baseman George Scales will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Philadelphia (N) and St. Louis (N). The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Scales collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Torn Posterior Cruciate Ligament was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials.
 
Monday 4/10/1922: Player of the Week honors go to Ellis and Hornsby
The American League Player of the Week award goes to James Ellis, New York (A)'s starting first baseman. James pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .522 with 1 HR and 9 RBI while slugging .870. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 8 game hitting streak right now. Rogers Hornsby from Philadelphia (N) wins his 4th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Rogers was on fire, hitting .462 with 3 HR and 6 RBI. Friday 4/7/1922: Larry Doyle ropes 2000th career hit
PITTSBURGH - Cincinnati's players had every reason to congratulate Larry Doyle, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! With one out in the 5th inning, Larry drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. In 15 years of big league action so far, Larry has compiled a batting average of .288, along with 71 homeruns and 888 RBI. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.'

PHILADELPHIA (N) - Pete Alexander had his best stuff going, and Philadelphia (N) hitters had nothing to cheer about. Pittsburgh's right-hander pitched a 2-hitter, his 1st shutout of the season. Alexander (1-0) fanned 6 and walked 1, throwing 107 pitches. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Pittsburgh's second baseman Eddie Collins went 3 for 4, stroking a double, with 4 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Alexander. Pittsburgh improved its record to 1-0, scoring 9 runs on 10 hits.
