Sunday 10/22/1919: Johnson (CLE) and Alexander (PIT) win Most Valuable Pitcher
Walter Johnson was named the American League Most Valuable Pitcher winner today. Cleveland's right-hander put up fabulous numbers this year which earned him the highest award a pitcher can receive. Opposing players hit .208 against Walter this season. While posting an ERA of 2.34 he went 27-12 in 44 starts, fanning 282 and walking 103 hitters. Walter has pitched 6 shutouts and 35 complete games. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! Johnson wins the award for the 2nd time in his 12-year career. Pittsburgh's right-hander Pete Alexander was untouchable all year long. His work paid off today as the National League named him the Most Valuable Pitcher winner! His ERA of 2.37 helped him to a 24-9 record this year. He struck out 234 and walked 65 in 288.1 innings. He has 26 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 1st in the National League in ERA and 2nd in wins!
 
Sunday 10/22/1919: Kennard (CLE) and Ruth (BSN) win Most Valuable Hitter
The 1919 American League Most Valuable Hitter winner has been announced. It's Cleveland's first baseman Dan While compiling an on base percentage of .393, Dan He's 6th in the American League in batting, 7th in homeruns and 1st in RBI! The Most Valuable Hitter in the National League was handed to Boston (N)'s leftfielder Babe Ruth! His season features a batting average of .277 (147 hits in 530 AB), 28 doubles, 6 triples and 44 homeruns. Ruth collected 125 RBI and 130 runs as well. He's 1st in the National League in RBIs and 1st in homeruns!
 
Sunday 10/22/1919: Cochran (NYY) and Cockrell (STL) win Rookie Of The Year
New York (A)'s third baseman George Cochran has worked hard to reach the big leagues. His work paid off today as the American League named him the Rookie Of The Year winner! Cochran has hit no homeruns this year while batting .149. He adds 9 doubles, along with 29 runs scored. The National League Rookie Of The Year winner was announced today as well, with St. Louis (N)'s pitcher Phil Cockrell earning the trophy for putting up the best numbers among rookies in his league. His ERA of 2.87 helped him to a 12-8 record this year. He struck out 91 and walked 62 in 219.1 innings. He has 11 complete games and one shutout.
 
Thursday 10/12/1919: Pete Alexander (PIT) will miss 5 weeks
PITTSBURGH - When it rains, it pours. Pittsburgh's ace Pete Alexander will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against St. Louis (N) where he left the field in the 2nd inning. Pittsburgh wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Alexander had suffered a Strained Elbow Ligament. Pete has a record of 24-9 this season, with an ERA of 2.37. In 288.1 Innings he was able to strike out 234 batters. He has 26 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 1st in the National League in ERA and 2nd in wins!
 
Sunday 10/8/1919: Cleveland's Mchenry severely injured
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's players were scared when they had to watch Austin Mchenry suffer a serious injury when he dove for a ball in the game against Philadelphia (A). He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Mchenry will probaby miss 5-6 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Mchenry was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Broken Ribs. While compiling an on base percentage of .365, Austin hit .318 and slugged .448. He has collected 98 runs batted in this year. He's 9th in the American League in batting and 5th in RBI!
 
Wednesday 10/4/1919: Cleveland's Benny Kauff hits for the cycle
CLEVELAND - Benny Kauff led Cleveland to a 11-2 win over Washington by squeezing four hits out of his bat. That's not the best part, though. He hit for the cycle as well! In the 1st inning he unloaded a RBI triple off Dave Davenport. Number 2 in the 3rd inning accounted for a two-run double. A single in the 4th off Dave Davenport accounted for his 3rd hit. Number 4 in the 7th inning, a shot estimated at 353 feet, cleared the wall in right field. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Benny did drive in 6 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He now has a total of 198 hits this season, accounting for a .335 batting average. He becomes the 3rd player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. On 4/4/1919, Zack Wheat was the last player to hit for the cycle.
 
Monday 10/2/1919: Philadelphia (A)'s Williams wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Cy Williams, Philadelphia (A)'s starting rightfielder. He hit .524 with 6 RBI and slugged .857 in 21 at bats. His season numbers are: .303 AVG, 169 hits, 17 doubles, 2 triples and 15 longballs, along with 99 RBI and 80 runs scored. He's 2nd in the American League in RBIs and 3rd in homeruns! It's the 2nd time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Brooklyn's leftfielder Carson Bigbee. He hit .591 with 4 RBI and slugged .818 in 22 at bats. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. Bigbee has walked 42 times this year and posts a .342 OBP. While batting .293, 170 for 581, he has driven in 46 runs.
 
Sunday 10/1/1919: John Donaldson pitches his 6th shutout of the season
CINCINNATI - Great days are rare. But not for Cincinnati's left-hander John Donaldson. New York (N) found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 6th shutout this season, and the 13th time he has done it in his career. Donaldson (21-17) fanned 6 and walked 2, throwing 110 pitches. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' Tommy Griffith helped Donaldson at the plate, he went 2 for 3, stroking a double. Cincinnati scored 1 run on 6 hits.
 
Sunday 10/1/1919: Chicago (N)'s Shocker named Pitcher of the Month
Detroit's Jesse Haines had a terrific September, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. He went 4-0 in September and finished the month with an ERA of 1.62. He struck out 6 in 33.1 innings. Jesse fired two shutouts! Jesse has a record of 14-7 this season, with an ERA of 2.51. In 186.1 Innings he was able to strike out 44 batters. Jesse has pitched 3 shutouts and 15 complete games. Urban Shocker pitched like a legend in September, and the National League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He went 5-0 in September and finished the month with an ERA of 1.94. He struck out 33 in 51 innings. Urban got two complete game shutouts as well! Opposing players hit .255 against Urban this season. While posting an ERA of 3.52 he went 15-18 in 39 starts, fanning 192 and walking 96 hitters. Urban has pitched 4 shutouts and 26 complete games.
 
Sunday 10/1/1919: Speaker ( ) and Wickland (STL) win monthly award
The American League's best player of the month was He hit .416 with 20 RBI and slugged .610 in 77 at bats. His season numbers are: .339 AVG, 192 hits, 43 doubles, 13 triples and 3 longballs, along with 99 RBI and 105 runs scored. He's 3rd in the American League in batting and 2nd in RBI! The Batter of the Month award in the National League goes to St. Louis (N)'s Al Wickland this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. In 80 at bats he hit .412 with 2 HR and 16 RBI. He has hit 5 taters while batting .277 this season. His 129 hits and 79 walks add up to a .387 on-base percentage.
 
Friday 9/29/1919: Frank Shellenback out for 6 weeks
DETROIT - Detroit is without its right-hander Frank Shellenback for at least 6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Otto Briggs in a game against Cleveland. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Detroit wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Shellenback had suffered a Pulled Tricep Muscle. This season Shellenback compiled an ERA of 3.75, going 8-8 in 20 starts. He fanned 44 while giving up 183 hits in 175.1 innings.
 
Thursday 9/28/1919: Cincinnati's Robertson severely injured, out for season
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's right-hander Dick Robertson experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 7th inning of the game against New York (N), Robertson complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Cincinnati wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Robertson had suffered a Torn Back Muscle. Opposing players hit .303 against Dick this season. While posting an ERA of 3.47 he went 2-1 in 4 starts, fanning 13 and walking 10 hitters.
 
Monday 9/25/1919: Johnson (BOS) and Wickware (CHC) win P.O.W. award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Dicta Johnson, one of Boston (A)'s best starting pitchers. Johnson was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 2.50. Along the way he struck out 8 in 18 innings. He was able to complete both starts of the week. This season Johnson compiled an ERA of 4.06, going 15-20 in 42 starts. He fanned 113 while giving up 392 hits in 348.1 innings. Dicta has pitched 2 shutouts and 30 complete games. The National League's best player of the week was Chicago (N)'s Frank Wickware, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. Wickware was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.51. Along the way he struck out 12 in 17.2 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. His ERA of 2.85 helped him to a 23-11 record this year. He struck out 219 and walked 139 in 322 innings. He has 21 complete games and 3 shutouts. Thursday 9/21/1919: Cleveland's Crandall out for the season
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's right-hander Doc Crandall experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 8th inning of the game against Washington, Crandall complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Crandall was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Ruptured Disc Back. This season Crandall compiled an ERA of 3.39, going 19-6 in 30 starts. He fanned 100 while giving up 269 hits in 262.2 innings. Doc has pitched one shutout and 23 complete games. He's 6th in the American League in wins!
 
Tuesday 9/19/1919: New York (A)'s Schneider severely injured
NEW YORK (A) - When it rains, it pours. New York (A)'s right-hander Pete Schneider will not pitch for at least 7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Detroit where he left the field in the 7th inning. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Bone Chips Shoulder. This season Schneider compiled an ERA of 3.68, going 6-20 in 29 starts. He fanned 97 while giving up 275 hits in 247 innings.
 
Monday 9/18/1919: Philadelphia (A)'s Williams wins Player of the Week award
Cy Williams wins his 1st Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Cy pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .526 with 2 HR and 7 RBI while slugging .895. Rogers Hornsby from Philadelphia (N) wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. He hit .458 with 6 RBI and slugged .833 in 24 at bats.
 
Monday 9/11/1919: New York (N)'s Tesreau wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Harry Weaver, one of St. Louis (A)'s best starting pitchers. Weaver was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50. Along the way he struck out 4 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Jeff Tesreau, one of New York (N)'s best starting pitchers. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 3.33 while going 3-0. He hurled a shutout as well.
 
Friday 9/8/1919: Pittsburgh's Beckwith severely injured
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's third baseman John Beckwith will miss at least 6 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Pulled Groin Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Beckwith has hit 21 homeruns this year while batting .328. He adds 20 doubles, along with 76 runs scored. He's 5th in the National League in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 1st in RBI!
 
Monday 9/4/1919: Weaver (SLA) and Tyler (BSN) win P.O.W. award
St. Louis (A)'s pitcher Harry Weaver had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Harry went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 3 in 18 innings of work. He pitched two shutouts! In 5 starts this year Harry struck out 11 batters in 45 innings of work. His ERA is 2.60, his record 2-1. He has 3 complete games and 2 shutouts. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Boston (N)'s Lefty Tyler this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Friday 9/1/1919: Sam Jones pitches his 4th shutout of the season
PHILADELPHIA (A) - Philadelphia (A)'s hitters looked uncomfortable, and Chicago (A)'s Sam Jones didn't help them. The right-hander fired his 4th shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. Jones (21-10) fanned 1 and walked 2, throwing 94 pitches. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Stuffy Mcinnis helped Jones at the plate, he finished 3 for 4, doubling once, and driving in 3 runs. Chicago (A) improved its record to 59-75, scoring 5 runs on 11 hits.
 
Friday 9/1/1919: Smith and Faeth receive Pitcher of the Month award
George Smith pitched like a legend in August, and the American League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. His ERA of just 1.16 helped him to a 5-2 record in August. He worked 62 innings, striking out 24 hitters while walking 10. George got two complete game shutouts as well! Opposing players hit .260 against George this season. While posting an ERA of 2.82 he went 7-8 in 14 starts, fanning 42 and walking 25 hitters. George has pitched 3 shutouts and 13 complete games. Tony Faeth pitched like a legend in August, and the National League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. His record of 1-2 in 3 was among the leagues best this month. In 14.2 innings of work he allowed just 11 hits while striking out 6, compiling an ERA of just 0.61. His ERA of 0.61 helped him to a 1-2 record this year. He struck out 6 and walked 4 in 14.2 innings.
 
Friday 9/1/1919: Cleveland's Ruth named Batter of the Month
Cleveland's second baseman Sam Bennett had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. In 111 at bats he hit .423 with 3 HR and 22 RBI. His season features a batting average of .332 (138 hits in 416 AB), 18 doubles, 4 triples and 9 longballs. Bennett collected 74 RBI and 64 runs as well. Thursday 8/31/1919: George Smith dominates St. Louis (A), gives up just 2 hits
WASHINGTON - St. Louis (A)'s hitters were dominated by Washington's George Smith. He gave up just 2 hits in recording his 3rd shutout of the season. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Smith (7-8) fanned 4 and walked 2, throwing 104 pitches. Washington's second baseman Bill Mckechnie finished with 1 hit in 3 AB, doubling once. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Smith. Washington improved its record to 73-60, scoring 1 run on 3 hits.
 
Monday 8/28/1919: Boston (N)'s Toney wins Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Cleveland's Dan Dan He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 8 games. This year Kennard drove in 84 and scored 92 runs while batting .324 with 6 taters. He's 7th in the American League in batting, 8th in homeruns and 1st in RBI! The National League's best player of the week was Boston (N)'s Fred Toney, who wins the award for the 5th time in his career. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.00 while going 2-0. He was able to complete both starts of the week. This season Toney compiled an ERA of 2.95, going 23-7 in 34 starts. He fanned 75 while giving up 270 hits in 284 innings. Fred has pitched 5 shutouts and 24 complete games. He's 9th in the National League in ERA and 1st in wins!
 
Wednesday 8/23/1919: Eddie Cicotte shuts out Chicago (A) on one hit
ST. LOUIS (A) - Eddie Cicotte had some fun again. Chicago (A) hitters did not. St. Louis (A)'s right-hander gave up just one hit in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 29 career shutouts in 335 games started. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Cicotte (15-11) fanned 6 and walked 2, throwing 122 pitches. St. Louis (A)'s catcher Wally Schang got 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a double, and collecting 4 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Cicotte. The final score of the game was 9-0.
 
Tuesday 8/22/1919: John Donaldson turns in great performance against Pittsburgh
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's lefty John Donaldson is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Pittsburgh on just one hit. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 11th time he has done it in his career. Donaldson (16-13) was overpowering, fanning 12 while walking 2, throwing 136 pitches. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' George Johnson helped Donaldson at the plate, he went 1 for 2, and driving in 2 runs. Cincinnati scored 3 runs on 10 hits.
 
Monday 8/21/1919: Judge (BOS) and Bigbee (BRO) win P.O.W. award
It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Boston (A)'s first baseman Joe Judge. Judge helped his team with an average of .452 and 13 RBI in 31 at bats. Carson Bigbee from Brooklyn wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Bigbee helped his team with an average of .536 and 6 RBI in 28 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 9 games. Carson is hitting .279 this year, with 127 hits in 455 at bats. He has driven in 38 runs, slugging .371.
 
Sunday 8/20/1919: Dicta Johnson dominates New York (A), gives up just 2 hits
BOSTON (A) - All you need to win is a dominating pitching performance. And Boston (A)'s Dicta Johnson did so today, in a 2-hit shutout against New York (A). Johnson (10-19) fanned 5 and walked 2, throwing 130 pitches. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Boston (A)'s first baseman Joe Judge went 4 for 4, hitting a double, and driving in 5 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Johnson. Boston (A) scored 9 runs on 14 hits.

Boston (N)'s pitcher Fred Toney had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Fred went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 0 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well.
 
Friday 8/11/1919: Bob Shawkey shuts out St. Louis (A) on one hit
ST. LOUIS (A) - Philadelphia (A)'s Bob Shawkey overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. St. Louis (A) had no chance, collecting just one hit against the right-hander. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Shawkey (17-13) struck out 6 and walked none, throwing 73 of 105 pitches for strikes. Fred Luderus helped Shawkey at the plate, he collected 4 hits in 4 trips to the plate, stroking two 2B's. The final score of the game was 6-0.

NEW YORK (N) - When it rains, it pours. New York (N)'s right-hander Al Mamaux will not pitch for at least 4 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Chicago (N) where he left the field in the 9th inning. Mamaux was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Pulled Tricep Muscle. Opposing players hit .231 against Al this season. While posting an ERA of 3.43 he went 10-15 in 28 starts, fanning 119 and walking 83 hitters.
 
Tuesday 8/8/1919: Jack Coombs turns in great performance against New York (A)
PHILADELPHIA (A) - Philadelphia (A)'s right-hander Jack Coombs is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking New York (A) on just 2 hits. It's his 5th shutout this season, and the 29th time he has done it in his career. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Coombs (20-9) struck out 6 and issued 4 BB, throwing 88 of 155 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Philadelphia (A) was third baseman Al Halt, he went 3 for 5, and driving in 3 runs. Philadelphia (A) improved its record to 63-49, scoring 8 runs on 16 hits.
 
Monday 8/7/1919: Fred Toney fires 2-hitter against Chicago (N)
CHICAGO (N) - With his best stuff going, Boston (N)'s Fred Toney overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Chicago (N) had no chance, collecting just 2 hits against the right-hander. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Irish Meusel singled with one out in the 7th inning. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Toney (19-7) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning none. Jack Fournier provided Boston (N) with the offense Toney needed as he finished 3 for 4, with three runs scored. Boston (N) scored 9 runs on 14 hits.

ST. LOUIS (A) - St. Louis (A) is without its right-hander Al Demaree for at least 6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to George Mcquillan in a game against New York (A). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Herniated Disc Back. Al has a record of 13-11 this season, with an ERA of 3.89. In 215 Innings he was able to strike out 70 batters. Al has pitched 2 shutouts and 18 complete games. He's 8th in the American League in wins!
 
Tuesday 8/1/1919: Johnson and Harper receive Pitcher of the Month award

Tuesday 8/1/1919: Blackwell (WAS) and Ruth (WAS) win monthly award
The American League Batter of the Month award goes to Charles Blackwell, Washington's starting centerfielder. In 94 at bats he hit .351 with 5 HR and 19 RBI. PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's right-hander Frank Miller experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 1st inning of the game against Cincinnati, Miller complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Torn Rotator Cuff Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This season Miller compiled an ERA of 2.42, going 5-3 in 1 starts. He fanned 7 while giving up 27 hits in 22.1 innings.
 
Monday 7/24/1919: Willie Adams dominates Philadelphia (N), gives up just 2 hits
PITTSBURGH - Philadelphia (N)'s bats were sleeping, and Pittsburgh's Willie Adams gave them no chance to wake up. He gave up just 2 hits in recording his 2nd shutout of the season. Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Marquard will miss about 5-6 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Fractured Hand. CHICAGO (A) - All you need to win is a dominating pitching performance. And St. Louis (A)'s Doc Ayers did so today, in a 1-hit shutout against Chicago (A). Ayers (9-13) struck out 1 and walked none, throwing 64 of 108 pitches for strikes. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' The hitting star for St. Louis (A) was first baseman Wally Pipp, he finished 1 for 4, homering once, and driving in 2 runs. St. Louis (A) improved its record to 44-39, scoring 10 runs on 12 hits.
 
Monday 7/3/1919: Player of the Week honors go to Marquard and Mcnair
Rube Marquard of Washington wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for dominating American League's hitters the entire week. Rube went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50, while fanning 13 in 18 innings of work. WASHINGTON - Washington's first baseman George Sisler will miss at least 5 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Pulled Back Muscle which will require surgery. Sisler has walked 12 times this year and posts a .371 OBP. Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Hoyt (5-1) struck out 1 and walked none, throwing 63 of 88 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Detroit was first baseman George Burns, he got 2 hits in 4 AB. The final score of the game was 3-0.
 
Monday 4/24/1919: Player of the Week honors go to Kennard and Beckwith
Dan Dan He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 8 game hitting streak right now. While compiling an on base percentage of .482, Dan He's 2nd in the American League in batting, 4th in homeruns and 1st in RBI! John Beckwith wins his 3rd Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. John went 10 for 19 (.526), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 12 RBI.
 
Friday 4/21/1919: Walter Johnson pitches 2-hit shutout against New York (A)
CLEVELAND - Walter Johnson had some fun again. New York (A) hitters did not. Cleveland's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 60 career shutouts in 398 games started. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Johnson (4-1) was really unbelievable, striking out 18 and walking 3, throwing 77 of 125 pitches for strikes. Cleveland's first baseman Dan Cleveland scored 13 runs on 15 hits.
 
Thursday 4/20/1919: Al Demaree shuts out Washington on 2 hits
ST. LOUIS (A) - Al Demaree had his best stuff going, and Washington hitters were chanceless. St. Louis (A)'s right-hander fired a 2-hitter, his 1st shutout of the season. Demaree (4-1) fanned none and walked 2, throwing 120 pitches. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Russell Powell provided St. Louis (A) with the offense Demaree needed as he stroked 3 hits in 4 AB. St. Louis (A) improved its record to 10-8, scoring 4 runs on 12 hits.
 
Thursday 4/20/1919: Washington's Benton out for 7 weeks
WASHINGTON - Washington is without its left-hander Rube Benton for at least 7 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Eddie Foster in a game against St. Louis (A). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Benton was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Ruptured Bicep Tendon. His ERA of 3.65 helped him to a 3-1 record this year. He struck out 9 and walked 3 in 37 innings.
 
Tuesday 4/18/1919: New York (N)'s Rudolph severely injured, out for season
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s ace Dick Rudolph will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against Philadelphia (N) on Tuesday. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Ruptured Disc Back which will require surgery. Dick has a record of 2-1 this season, with an ERA of 4.26. In 38 Innings he was able to strike out 11 batters.
 
Monday 4/17/1919: Detroit's Ogden out for 6-7 weeks
DETROIT - Detroit is without its right-hander Jack Ogden for at least 6-7 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Buck Herzog in a game against Philadelphia (A). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Torn Bicep Muscle which will require surgery. His ERA of 5.08 helped him to a 1-2 record this year. He struck out 6 and walked 11 in 28.1 innings.
 
Monday 4/17/1919: Player of the Week honors go to Lundy and Toney
It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Cleveland's third baseman Dick Lundy. Dick pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .577 with 1 HR and 11 RBI while slugging .731. While compiling an on base percentage of .507, Dick hit .476 and slugged .603. He has collected 19 runs batted in this year. He's 1st in the American League in batting and 1st in RBI! The National League Player of the Week award goes to Fred Toney, one of Boston (N)'s best starting pitchers. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.00 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. Fred has a record of 4-0 this season, with an ERA of 1.29. In 35 Innings he was able to strike out 7 batters. He has 3 complete games and one shutout. He's 2nd in the National League in ERA and 1st in wins! He's 3rd in the National League in saves!
 
Monday 4/10/1919: Wheat (WAS) and Johnson (CIN) win P.O.W. award
Washington's leftfielder Zack Wheat had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Wheat helped his team with an average of .481 and 3 RBI in 27 at bats. While compiling an on base percentage of .389, Zack hit .389 and slugged .611. He has collected 4 runs batted in this year. He's 8th in the American League in batting! It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Cincinnati's leftfielder George Johnson. He hit .480 with 9 RBI and slugged .920 in 25 at bats.
 
Friday 4/7/1919: Urban Shocker out for 5-6 weeks
CHICAGO (N) - When it rains, it pours. Chicago (N)'s right-hander Urban Shocker will not pitch for at least 5-6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Brooklyn where he left the field in the 3rd inning. Shocker was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Pulled Tricep Muscle.
 
Thursday 4/6/1919: George Johnson collects five hits against Philadelphia (N)
PHILADELPHIA (N) - George Johnson punished Philadelphia (N)'s pitching today, collecting five hits in 5 AB. That definitely helped Cincinnati, they won the game 9 to 4. A pitch from Larry Cheney in the 2nd inning left his bat for a double. In the 5th inning he belted a double off Larry Cheney. In the 7th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Larry Cheney. He collected singles in the 1st inning (one RBI) and in the 9th inning . George did drive in 2 while scoring 4 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 13 hits in 22 at bats, resulting in a .591 batting average.
 
Tuesday 4/4/1919: Zack Wheat ropes four hits, completes cycle
BOSTON (A) - Zack Wheat hits 'em where they ain't. Boston (A) certainly agrees as Washington's leftfielder unloaded four hits and hitting for the cycle. A single in the 1st off Hank Robinson accounted for his 1st hit. A pitch from Hank Robinson in the 3rd inning left his bat for a RBI triple. In the 5th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Hank Robinson. It tied the ballgame at 3. In the 8th inning he belted a double off Hank Robinson. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Zack did drive in 2 while scoring 3 runs on his own. Sunday 4/2/1919: St. Louis (A)'s Eddie Foster pounds six hits
CLEVELAND - 'Wow, six hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said St. Louis (A)'s third baseman Eddie Foster after the 15-12 win over Cleveland. He collected singles in the 1st inning , in the 3rd inning , in the 4th , in the 6th inning , in the 9th inning Eddie scored 5 runs. He didn't collect any RBIs, though. He's having a very good season so far, batting .700.
