Thursday 10/26/1909: Boston (A)'s Mcconnell earns Rookie Of The Year George Mcconnell was named the American League Rookie Of The Year winner today. Boston (A)'s pitcher put up pretty good numbers for a rookie this year. This 32 year old kid will probably have a long and successful career! In 23 starts this year George struck out 84 batters in 205.2 innings of work. His ERA is 3.06, his record 18-4. He has 21 complete games and one shutout. He's 9th in the American League in wins! Saturday 9/23/1909: Season ending injury strikes Philadelphia (N)'s Wheat PHILADELPHIA (N) - Philadelphia (N)'s leftfielder Zack Wheat will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Philadelphia (N) and New York (N). The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Wheat collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Philadelphia (N) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Wheat had suffered a Torn Posterior Cruciate Ligament. Zack has gone 161 for 463 (.348) this season, hitting 4 homeruns and driving in 62 runs. 'Today I just felt great. I had a good feeling while warming up, and I knew something special was about to happen.' Thursday 8/10/1909: Boston (N)'s Doscher out for 7 weeks BOSTON (N) - Boston (N) is without its left-hander Jack Doscher for at least 7 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Mordecai Brown in a game against New York (N). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Strained Elbow Ligament was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Monday 8/7/1909: Elmer Flick uncorks cycle hits against Washington WASHINGTON - Chicago (A)'s rightfielder Elmer Flick once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Washington's pitching staff with a 4 hit performance on Monday. A single in the 1st off Harry Felix accounted for his 1st hit. A pitch from Harry Felix in the 2nd inning left his bat for a RBI triple. Number 3 in the 7th inning accounted for a double. His 4th hit, a solo homerun off Highball Wilson in the 9th inning, landed an estimated 391 feet from home plate. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Elmer did drive in 3 while scoring 4 runs on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .345. He becomes the 29th player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. Charlie Hemphill was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 5/5/1908. |

Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Marquard will miss about 5-6 weeks. The 22 year old pitched a 1-hit shutout against New York (N), recording his 1st shutout of the season. Marquard (2-6) struck out 3 and issued 4 BB, throwing 68 of 114 pitches for strikes. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Zack Wheat helped Marquard at the plate, he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, hitting a double, and collecting 2 RBI. Philadelphia (N) scored 4 runs on 9 hits. |
Monday 5/1/1909: St. Louis (N)'s White named Pitcher of the Month It's the 12th time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to New York (A)'s pitcher Rube Waddell. His ERA of just 1.65 helped him to a 6-1 record in April. He worked 60 innings, striking out 58 hitters while walking 8. Rube pitched a shutout as well. The best month of April in the National League certainly had St. Louis (N)'s left-hander Doc White, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. He started 5 games in April, going 5-0 and compiling an ERA of 0.42 in 43 innings. Doc fanned 20 hitters. Doc pitched a shutout as well. |
Monday 5/1/1909: Batter of the Month award winners announced The Batter of the Month award in the American League goes to Philadelphia (A)'s Hans Lobert this time, as the second baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. In 108 at bats he hit .380 with 2 HR and 18 RBI. Brooklyn's centerfielder Sam Crawford had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. Crawford helped his team with an average of .369 and 13 RBI in 103 at bats. |
Monday 5/1/1909: Hoelskoetter (CHA) and Mathewson (PIT) win P.O.W. award Chicago (A)'s shortstop Art Hoelskoetter had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Art was on fire, hitting .500 with 1 HR and 7 RBI. Art is hitting .341 this year, with 29 hits in 85 at bats. He has driven in 18 runs, slugging .412. He's 5th in the American League in batting and 4th in RBI! The National League's best player of the week was Pittsburgh's Christy Mathewson, who wins the award for the 4th time in his career. Mathewson was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.00. Along the way he struck out 13 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. |
Tuesday 4/25/1909: George Mcquillan turns in great performance against Chicago (N) ST. LOUIS (N) - St. Louis (N)'s right-hander George Mcquillan is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Chicago (N) on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 8th time he has done it in his career. Wednesday 4/19/1909: Patsy Flaherty fires 1-hitter against Boston (A) CLEVELAND - Cleveland's left-hander Patsy Flaherty is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Boston (A) on just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 21st time he has done it in his career. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Flaherty (3-1) struck out 2 and walked 2, throwing 70 of 103 pitches for strikes. Claude Ritchey provided Cleveland with the offense Flaherty needed as he finished 3 for 4. Cleveland improved its record to 12-6, scoring 7 runs on 10 hits. |

Wednesday 4/12/1909: St. Louis (N)'s Emmet Heidrick laces 2000th career hit ST. LOUIS (N) - St. Louis (N)'s leftfielder Emmet Heidrick was in good mood after the game against Pittsburgh, and he had every reason as he made some history while collecting his 2000th career hit. His best year so far was 1900 where he hit .375 with 2 homeruns and 57 RBI. 'Baseball is a great game, and adding something to it's history is smething I've always wanted. What a great day!' Monday 4/10/1909: Rip Vowinkel blanks Cleveland with a 2-hitter PHILADELPHIA (A) - Rip Vowinkel made some history on Monday by pitching a shutout in his first big-league start. Philadelphia (A)'s right-hander baffled Cleveland all day, allowing only 2 hits. What a way to begin a career! 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Monday 4/10/1909: Rube Waddell pitches 1-hit shutout against Detroit NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s lefty Rube Waddell is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Detroit found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Waddell 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 79th shutouts in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Sherry Magee doubled with one out in the 7th inning. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Waddell (2-1) was overpowering, fanning 12 while walking none, throwing 117 pitches. New York (A)'s first baseman Charlie Hickman collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, stroking two 2B's. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Waddell. New York (A) scored 3 runs on 7 hits. |

Philadelphia (N) had no chance, collecting just one hit against the right-hander. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.'
