Sunday 9/17/1900: Huge blow for Pittsburgh's Cronin, career over PITTSBURGH - It was one of baseball saddest days. Pittsburgh's right-hander Jack Cronin fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against Philadelphia (N) on Sunday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to John Grim, then suddenly collapsed. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Torn Back Muscle. Wednesday 8/9/1900: Indianapolis' Delahanty out for 5 weeks INDIANAPOLIS - Indianapolis' rightfielder Ed Delahanty will miss at least 5 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. Torn Calf Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. Saturday 5/27/1900: Jim Handiboe blanks Philadelphia (N) with a 2-hitter CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's right-hander Jim Handiboe is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Philadelphia (N) found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Handiboe 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 51st shutouts in his career. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Handiboe (5-8) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking 2, throwing 119 pitches. Dan Leahy provided Cincinnati with the offense Handiboe needed as he got 1 hit in 3 AB, and collecting 2 RBI. Cincinnati scored 3 runs on 3 hits. |
Friday 5/26/1900: John Shearon fires 1-hitter against Cincinnati CINCINNATI - Great days are rare. But not for Philadelphia (N)'s right-hander John Shearon. Cincinnati found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 8th time he has done it in his career. Jake Stenzel spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he tripled with no outs in the 5th inning. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Shearon (8-3) struck out 5 and walked 2, throwing 67 of 109 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Philadelphia (N) was catcher Mike Grady, he went 3 for 5, doubling once, scoring two runs and driving in 2 runs. The final score of the game was 10-0. |
Tuesday 5/23/1900: Larry Mckeon earns 400th career win CHICAGO (N) - Brooklyn's right-hander Larry Mckeon already had some highlights in his career, and today he added a historic one as he picked up his 400th career win. Mckeon went 9 innings. He allowed 6 earned runs , giving up 16 hits while striking out 0 and walking 6 earned runs. His career features a 2.40 ERA, along with 4619 K's in 5889 innings. 'You dream about that as a kid, but when you reach such a milestone it's hard to believe. Fantastic.' He set a career high with 32 wins in 1898. Mckeon won 20 or more games a season 13 times. The Hall of Fame is already waiting for this great player. |
Monday 5/22/1900: Burns and Sheehan win Player of the Week award Oyster Burns from Columbus wins his 10th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. In 27 at bats he hit .444 with 1 HR and 9 RBI. New York (N)'s rightfielder Biff Sheehan had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Biff was on fire, hitting .520 with 0 HR and 4 RBI. |
Wednesday 5/17/1900: Charlie Dewald turns in great performance against Philadelphia (A) PHILADELPHIA (A) - Boston (A)'s left-hander Charlie Dewald is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Philadelphia (A) on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 16th time he has done it in his career. Dewald (5-4) struck out 4 and issued 2 BB, throwing 54 of 92 pitches for strikes. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' The hitting star for Boston (A) was third baseman Bill Everitt, he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB. Monday 5/15/1900: Seward and Burns win Player of the Week award It's the 5th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Columbus' pitcher Ed Seward. Ed went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50, while fanning 11 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. Jim Burns wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Jim went 12 for 20 (.600), while hitting 0 HR and collecting 2 RBI. Saturday 5/13/1900: Bill Reidy (BRO) will miss 6 weeks BROOKLYN - Brooklyn is without its right-hander Bill Reidy for at least 6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Dick Harley in a game against Philadelphia (N). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Reidy was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Spasms Back. Opposing players hit .308 against Bill this season. While posting an ERA of 3.98 he went 5-5 in 11 starts, fanning 26 and walking 10 hitters. He has 6 complete games and 2 shutouts. |
Friday 5/12/1900: Washington has no chance in a NO-HITTER by Ed Seward COLUMBUS - Ed Seward had some fun again. REAL fun. Washington hitters did not. Columbus' right-hander fired a no-hitter in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 18 career shutouts in 358 games started. Pop Foster spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with 2 away in the 5th inning. Seward (8-2) fanned 4 and walked 2, throwing 109 pitches. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Columbus' third baseman Billy Kinloch went 2 for 4, homering once, scoring two runs with 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Seward. Columbus improved its record to 22-15, scoring 6 runs on 10 hits. |
Thursday 5/11/1900: Adonis Terry fires 1-hitter against Columbus COLUMBUS - Washington's right-hander Adonis Terry is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Columbus on just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 33rd time he has done it in his career. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Terry (6-3) fanned 5 and walked 2, throwing 114 pitches. Thursday 5/11/1900: Bill Phillips quiets Louisville bats with shutout PHILADELPHIA (A) - Louisville's hitters looked uncomfortable, and Philadelphia (A)'s Bill Phillips didn't help them. The right-hander fired his 2nd shutout of the season, a 2-hitter. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Phillips (5-2) struck out 4 and issued 5 BB, throwing 64 of 128 pitches for strikes. Philadelphia (A)'s catcher Lou Criger went 2 for 3, doubling once. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Phillips. The final score of the game was 5-0. |

Monday 5/1/1900: Waddell (BAL) and Wetzel (BRO) win monthly pitcher award Rube Waddell pitched like a legend in April, and the American League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He started 8 games in April, going 6-2 and compiling an ERA of 1.77 in 71 innings. Rube fanned 73 hitters. Rube pitched a shutout as well. Brooklyn's Shorty Wetzel had a terrific April, and it earned him the National League Pitcher of the month award. His ERA of just 2.31 helped him to a 6-2 record in April. He worked 70 innings, striking out 51 hitters while walking 14. |

He hit .370 with 24 RBI and slugged .533 in 92 at bats. |

Thursday 4/20/1900: Cleveland's Ed Pabst gets the cycle BOSTON (A) - Cleveland's first baseman Ed Pabst accomplished a difficult feat in a game against Boston (A), hitting for the cycle to improve his career batting average to .289! A triple off John Henry in the 1st inning, accounted for his 1st hit. A single in the 5th off John Henry accounted for his 2nd hit. His 3rd hit, off John Henry in the 7th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left-center. A pitch from John Henry in the 9th inning left his bat for a double. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Ed scored 4 runs, and he collected 2 RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .421. He becomes the 20th player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. Charlie Abbey was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 8/31/1898. |
Monday 4/17/1900: St. Louis (N)'s Cooley wins Player of the Week award The American League's best player of the week was Boston (A)'s Bill Hallman, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. He hit .500 with 4 RBI and slugged .692 in 26 at bats. Duff Cooley from St. Louis (N) wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. He hit .522 with 8 RBI and slugged .870 in 23 at bats. Cooley has hit 2 longballs this year while batting .346. He adds 2 doubles, along with 10 runs scored. He's 3rd in the National League in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns! |
Saturday 4/15/1900: Ginger Beaumont (NYG) will miss 8-9 weeks NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s centerfielder Ginger Beaumont hurt himself in the 6th inning while diving for a batted ball. He got up slowly and had to leave the game. Ginger Beaumont will miss at least 8-9 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Beaumont was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Broken Hand. Beaumont has hit for a .309 average this season. He has 4 extra base hits along with 21 total bases, resulting in a .382 slugging percentage. |

Thursday 4/13/1900: Jim Handiboe earns 300th career win BROOKLYN - Cincinnati's right-hander Jim Handiboe gained immortality by recording his 300th win in the big leagues. He struck out 4 and walked 3 earned runs. Over 9 innings he allowed 3 earned runs and 8 hits. His career features a 2.41 ERA, along with 4268 K's in 4818 innings. 'I'm out of words. I'll probably realize it tomorrow, but for now I'm done.' He set a career high with 32 wins in 1898. Handiboe won 20 or more games a season 9 times. It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame! The number he has put up are well worth it. |
Tuesday 4/11/1900: Season ending injury strikes Philadelphia (N)'s Mertes PHILADELPHIA (N) - Philadelphia (N)'s leftfielder Sam Mertes suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself diving for a ball. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Torn Rib Cage Muscle which will require surgery. |
